Just finished this. What did the ending mean? Is his steppenwolf persona dead? Is he done being depressive or does it suggest that he is going to get better? Discuss.
I thought he understood the meaning of the rooms and after he realizes he made up the characters he interacted with he is ready to continue a more positive lifestyle...or not?
The ending really fucking sucks. I am very sorry, I usually like Hesse somewhat, but the ending is literally just 'be yourself :)))'. Hesse is a fucking hack.

Quite liked the ending. A little bit like John Malcovich's alternate universe full of Malcovichs. I took it to mean the guy went too far into his own head.
