If I ever saw Franzen in my neighborhood I'd kick his ass up and down the block.

t. Franzen
>>

Damn....
>>
>>7656629
I had a HS teacher who had every Vonnegut novel on a shelf in his room along with Life of Pi and some Camu. People always talked about how he was the smartest teacher.
>>
can someone please tell me why franzen is considered so good?
>>
>>7656703
i mean it's a low bar. hs teachers and all.

>>7656709
Oh man you're right. I feel like an ass now.

I will never understand the Vonnegut hate

>g-guys it's just a meme right? I'm not a pleb?
Hello newfriend!
Vonnegut is bottom-of-the-barrel prose and hackneyed concepts dressed up in the garb of novelty.
>>
>>7656629
I've only read Mother Night by him and it was average
>>
>>7656997
Mother Night is sort of an oddball for Vonnegut. If you're interested in trying something else of his, I'd suggest Sirens of Titan or Breakfast of Champions.

he's a YA writer, his books are literally for children and teenagers, give the guy a break. at least he's not his obnoxious ass brother

What is it that decades of critics and scholars the world over have gotten wrong about him that you somehow got right?
>>

I understand that John Green books suck but does /lit/ hate everything about him?
>>

>presenting subjective taste as objective fact
>>

>he fell for the subjectivity meme

top pleb
>>
>>7657041
>decades of scholars and criticis

m8 vonnegut is generally regarded as a middling genre writer at best in academia and ignored, if not outright ridiculed. critics and scholars aren't reading vonnegut. middlebrow hack journalists and redditors are the ones reading and lauding him.
>>
>>7656892
His ideas were mostly ok but his prose was very stilted. The hate is mostly a reaction to reddit memeing the shit out of him.
>>
>>7657146
I always failed to see why people criticize his prose when simplistic prose was essential to his style?

>in creative writing lecture
>it's more like a really small three hour workshop
>Ask what fellow English Lit majors like to read
>Everyone says Harry Potter
>Everyone says John Green
>Half the class says Hunger Games

There is only one good writer out of the lot of them, and she's a British exchange student who is going back to Kent when the semester is over.
This is a third year course.
I want to die.

>mfw friend in that class writes a terrible fantasy short story and I have to be nice about it

This is the problem with YA writers. Somehow the majority my generation is composed of plebs who don't aspire to better themselves by reading good fiction.

>tfw they say they hate poetry because "it's difficult"

I do love Vonnegut. People mistake his accessibility and simplicity for a flaw. And yeah, shitty hipster kids trying to cultivate a certain aesthetic think he's some super edgy classic, but so what? Why are you critiquing them instead of his work? He wrote pulp style science fiction comedy with some babby's first existentialism and no pretensions of it being anything more than that. He's not a great writer in that his writing is the best, but he is my favorite writer for who he was as a person and what he was doing with his writing.

For example, if you see pic related and immediately associate it with people you hate and can't take it at face value, you need to reevaluate what you're letting shape your perceptions.

>>7657513
I actually like Evola's writings. I completely disagree with him on almost everything but I think they're intelligent and valuable articulations of right wing views that are often ignored or misrepresented.

I still enjoy Vonnegut, but I was more able to understand the criticism after I read this parody.

Harold Bloom added Cat's Cradle to his list in The Western Canon.
>>
>>7658574
I don't even like Harold Bloom but this is honestly good evidence that Vonnegut isn't just a YA hack writer, because if he had any of the real qualities of one (besides a sizable young adult audience and accessible writings, which aren't the problem with YA fiction), Bloom would have shit all over him because if nothing else he's good at identifying that kind of thing.
>>
>>7658574
>>7658713
>taking the list seriously
>not realizing bloom himself distances himself from it as much as possible
>confusing a pop lit book for academic criticism

Just how stupid are you? Do you get all your "knowledge" from /lit/?
