I'm trying to think of a word to use in an essay.
What's an adjective that implies that something opens new possibilities, or makes available new ideas or technologies or whatever that weren't available before? Something that "mentally unlocks"?

No, not that. I'm trying to think of a word that describes the sophistication that human brains have in comparison to animal brains. Like an animal can only form simple thoughts: Bug food, nest good, predator bad. Whereas a human can formulate complex mathematical equations and write literary masterpieces. The sentence is:
"But categorization also allows us to form more complex thoughts by the __________ process of combining categories into more complicated ideas."
The word should be like, something that metaphorically opens doors for new ideas and shit.

I don't see how an adjective fitting the description in post #1 would fit into the sentence in post #2 but whatever it's your essay.
#1: I'm thinking along the lines of "breaking ground", "catalyzing", "revolutionizing", "being a paradigm shift"
#2: I read some late Husserl recently (Cartesian meditations ยง4) and he speaks of something similar being a central notion of the concept of scientific knowledge (of course in a wide sense of the term), and he does it in terms of "mediate judgements", grounded in earlier judgements, as opposed to the things that are immediate and given. Maybe the process of cumulatively reaching higher levels of judgements could be called a mediating one?
