ya know I considered that, that maybe I'm just not as smart as these people. But on the other hand, I've known a good number of people who are factually stupid as fuck, but who grandstand constantly to try to look smarter than everyone (my roommate lies about his grades, his major, his internships, and generally his life accomplishments to everyone he meets).

I think the problem is that you arent intelligent or well read enough to go to worthwhile threads. You look through the catalog and go "oooh, Stephen King! or Oooooh Tolkien! or Ooooo Genre Fiction!" You ignore post modernism, you ignore racialist stuff, you ignore snobby troll threads, and you dont make an effort to write down and track what might actually be good.

I don't know, I certainly don't consider myself well read, but post modern is actually my favorite genre. I liked Tolkien and fantasy stuff as a kid but it doesn't really appeal to me anymore.

I'm sure there are some really smart people on this board, but in my experience people who feel the need to prove that they're smarter than others or to tell people that they're above average intelligent are usually not.

it's about half the board. they're assuming everyone else is as dumb as them. just keep reading and you'll get the pleasure of making one of them wet themselves because you read the book they only claim to have read. some people will give you good recs, but check other sources that aren't hiding their mundanity behind seven layers of irony and remember everything is lies regardless.

tl;dr- most books tell better lies than this place. be friends with them instead
