opinions on Peter Sotos?
he produced many zines dedicated to serial murderers, child abusers and nazi criminals
he writes in a first person perspective and aims for shock value, often praising such acts
he's also a notable enthusiast and worked with a handful of musicians
Buyer's Market is his self-proclaimed masterpiece
The least I can say is that he's got a very clear understanding of the way language affects people, and how to construct his prose to illicit a particular response. He ought to write advertisements, honestly.
Makes me wish William Bennett would write a book, but what are you going to do?
Peter Sotos is just an idiot. And his zines are lame.
Sickie shit for peon kids led to believe their edgy.
Fuck, I hate you no-nothings so bad - why do you even exist?
I swear to God, there are more idiots on /lit/ than I care to even imagine.
H U G E segments of this board are just normie wannabe poseurs.....
Garbage. I hate all American "alternative" or "indie" stuff (I know Whitehouse aren't "indie" per se, but I mean alternative in the broader sense).
At least in Literature, avant-garde or experimental artists are aware of the traditions they are trying to transcend. For example, Joyce is a fairly experimental writer, but his education in classical and traditional forms is quite obvious.
Conversely, in most underground music since Punk, it's almost obligatory to be experimental or subversive. Every other band to come out of New York in the late '70s / early '80s had the same mix of noise and subversiveness, but if everyone is avant-garde, then no-one is really avant-garde.
Do you think Sotos has studied Homer or Vergil? Do you think he listens to Bach? Of course he doesn't. His art is subversive for the sake of being subversive. People like Steve Albini like it because it doesn't require any knowledge about really experimental or avant-garde music.
Underneath the subversive facade, there is nothing new or innovatory about Sotos' art. Whether or not he makes his art to shock is irrelevant.
Whoops. I assumed they were American because the label that puts out their stuff is based in Chicago.
Anyway, since I'm also not a fan of Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire or any of the English edgy noisetards, my point stands.
some say he does it to criticize how media makes a huge deal out of sex offenders when in reality they just dont care
hence the juxtaposition of newspaper articles and visceral, raw text on his zines
>Do you think Sotos has studied Homer or Vergil? Do you think he listens to Bach?
have you? do you? I don't even think you've read Joyce. "fairly experimental." spoken like a true boor.
He tries to shock but lacks sufficient imagination to do so. He might be able to frighten a soccer mom or an amish but to anyone who ever picked up a newspaper in his life his attempts at being subversive are just amusing. He is an edgy teen who never grew up.
