Please help me; my other hobbies (video games and cinema) are failing me so I'm returning to literature my one true love.
I've read many of the essentials, a lot of Russian stuff, and anything I could get my hands on with a vaguely Philosophical bent (Camus and shit). I recently discovered Murakami: I think he's fantastic but I'm sure he's considered pleb here.
If anyone could take the time to give a recommendation or two I would really appreciate it. Done wasting my time on vidya.
Guess what asshole I said in the OP that I had went through the sticky and the archive. I used to be a regular on this board when I was a kid but I got sucked into the satanic vice of video games.
Oh sorry back in the day we called them essentials charts I guess today they're the sticky and archive.
Oh no one's going to reply to my shitty thread because I misused some of your precious terminology.
Cut me some fucking slack friends just need one good recommendation and it might save my life.
>he hasn't seen Knight of Cups
>he hasn't seen Hrútar
>he hasn't seen Dheepan
>he hasn't seen Rak Ti Khon Kaen
>he thinks Spotlight was a 9/10
Please get some taste before you trying shitting on an entire medium
Dont just do that. Just do your job as a lover of literature
And who the fuck cares about recent cinema? Unless you're old, there's still of top tier cinema to watch. Only after many years of exploring and watching movies can you say that cinema has nothing new to offer you, and that's when books are still going strong.
I believe there's a single good, giving person on this board with knowledge to share. Bump.
I don't think you actually care about anything you're saying because if you did you would have gone and read the fucking sticky, like you were told ten or twelve times. I think you just want attention because you're a sad and lonely little boy. Fuck off
I made it clear I am "new" to this board, at least as far as this decade. Why no one is willing to offer a single recommendation blows my mind, but I suppose theres a culture of denial on this board.
Alright alright, read the Confusions of Young Torless. You might not like it, that's alright. Then read some poetry by Philip Larkin. A Lover's Discourse. The Unbearable Lightness of Being. These are all very different things that I enjoyed a lot, each in their own way.
Yeah Im sad and lonely as fuck what does that have to do with it? I have read the fucking essentials charts that were compiled before you could use a keyboard. Jesus what a mess this board has become.
This board didn't used to be like /v/ and those textual embodiment of garbage. I prostrated myself and expressed my ignorance and expected earnest help but I received none until three hours in. I think that's fucked. And your opinion will speak more than I ever could of your corrupted will and degeneracy.
all dostoevsky? ah. well.
maybe you could try some of these books and authors then,
Fathers and Sons,
The Twelve Chairs,
The Master and Margarita,
Pushkin, (i'd avoid Eugene Onegin unless you know russian)
Oblomov (probably relevant to you)
Ivan Chonkin's adventures,
Gulag Archipelago... just to name a few.
and a couple of books I don't heard mentioned often around here,
The Manuscript Found in Saragossa,
not much Balzac, Zola, Stendhal,
You might check out ETA Hoffman, as he was one of Dostoevsky's favorites,
There's still a lot of stuff out there, man.
>Check the wiki, the catalog, and the archive before asking for advice or recommendations
You could have either looked at the recommended literature and read the ones in there you haven't, or you could have looked at the catalogue and found a book chart thread. You didn't need to make your own one asking to be spoon-fed generic recommendations. I don't give a shit how nicely you thought you asked, you shouldn't have made the thread in the first place.
I expressed in my ORIGINAL POST that I had checked out the essentials; the catalogue largely rehashes those same essentials. Same with the archive, of course. I'm getting weary of arguing this point but I used to post here quite a lot, and I have a thirst for what's new.
Do you have any sort of blog you wish to publicize?
What you're saying is utterly retarded and the books you're being recommended by the other Anon are ones you would have gotten from one or another of those lists if you had an ounce of initiative
Well at least they come from a human being with good intentions and not a sort of fucked conglomeration. Don't you know shit gets diluted when too many cooks spoil the broth?
I got recommendations from a flesh and blood human being and that's all I wanted. You can swallow your pride and recommend me a book or two if you want.
I have studied writing for many years and I have a vast array of favourite and carefully-selected words to dispatch at a moment's notice.
Just give up and recommend me a single novel.
Just pick a book faggot. It doesn't matter which one. But if you really need help with something so simple then how about you tell us what you enjoy or at least what you're looking for.
Kakfka, Murakami, Camus, Dostoyevsky, Huxley, Danielewski, (Pynchon is too hard for me lol but I like him anyways), Sartre, um Orwell's Aspidistra book
I like novels with a dreamlike quality (best executed by Murakami) and/or an overall pessimistic view of humanity, OR humans at their worst (Dostoyevsky my boy)
