Read this a couple months ago and didn't particularly like it. Seemed pretty edgy and forced, but then again I'm not especially intelligent and probably just didn't get it.

Anyway, could you potentially relate this to 'pataphysics? It seems at least in the same vein of absurdist proto-surrealism. Or am I grasping at straws?

It's nowhere near to be anything symbolist. It's proto-surrealism. And you want to read Rimbaud, A season in hell and Illuminations; then there's a ton of surrealists and others (Rimbaud's and Lautréamont's books were their bibles).

I don't think of it as edgy. You have to read it for language, for that magmatic vortex of words: he even gives you sufficient image of how the work feels and works (that flock of sparrows somewhere in the begining).

Don't know how the English translation works. I've read it several times, both in another translation and in original and it's one of the books that had the greatest impact on me.

Yeah I guess I didn't read it particularly conscientiously. Probably should read it in French at some point, for the prose to really stand out.
