Is this necessary reading if I wanted to get into beat literature?

Maybe.
I'm taking an intro to beat literature class at uni though.

ugh, why? it's a very shallow movement that is less about poetry and literature and more about whiny narcissism. as a historical/cultural movement it holds some interest but it's not "literature"
and if you're taking a class anyway why do you need a separate intro. your class will probably give you a better overview than any book/recs you get here.

Cause I'm about half way through the novel and bored out of my mind. Literally one of the worst books I've read.
I'm thinking about dropping the class, I've already read OTR and Naked Lunch Is the only book we read that looks semi interesting.

Haha why would someone go to university to take beat lit classes? What a waste of time and money.

I found the book to be quite interesting. It shows how the other guys in the Beat group were mostly jerking it and were nothing more than a couple of normal intelligent people looking for some kicks, and many times falling into pretentiousness (Ginsberg trying to read a poem and everyone shitting on him)
