Idk about /lit/ as a collective but I'm a big fan of Wallace Stevens. Seems like nobody talks about him here, for w/e reason.
>>
>>7608396
/lit/ doesn't talk about poetry much. But yeah, Stevens is brilliant and I discovered him through /lit/, plus I think Harold Bloom approves of him, so I'd say he's about as /lit/ as a poet can be without being Pound or a classical author.
>>
I wonder how /lit/ Larkin is? In the 'for' column he's great, often very depressing, has neet-friendly themes and afaik was politically right-wing. But on the other hand his poems aren't at all difficult to understand and he was a post-WW2 Britbong.
>>
>>7608396
Really enjoying Stevens at the moment, you might like A.R Ammons as well.
>>
>>7608396
Stevens is always talked about here when it's appropriate, you pretentious faggot

>>7611534
I'm French, I think you should read poetry in the original language, translations have no point I think, you're not reading the author's poem if it's translated.
>>
>>7611755
Just because you're not reading the author's poem doesn't necessarily mean there's no point
>>
>>7611764
Not always but it's another poem.

Mon negre.
>>
>>7608255
Baudelaire is definitely the best intro to French poetry, but Verlaine is another good choice for melancholy. Rimbaud is a little haughty, but if you can find a critical edition that isn't all "le Jim Morrison comparison, so deep" it provides a lot of valuable context.

Beat poetry is great- if you're 16 and smoke weed.

Nice flowers
Not every man has gentians in his house
in Soft September, at slow, Sad Michaelmas.

Bavarian gentians, big and dark, only dark
darkening the daytime torch-like with the smoking blueness
of Pluto’s gloom,
ribbed and torch-like, with their blaze of darkness spread
blue
down flattening into points, flattened under the sweep of
white day
torch-flower of the blue-smoking darkness, Pluto’s dark-
blue daze,
black lamps from the halls of Dis, burning dark blue,
giving off darkness, blue darkness, as Demeter’s pale lamps
give off light,
lead me then, lead me the way.

Reach me a gentian, give me a torch!
let me guide myself with the blue, forked torch of a flower
down the darker and darker stairs, where blue is darkened on
blueness,
even where Persephone goes, just now, from the frosted
September
to the sightless realm where darkness is awake upon the dark
and Persephone herself is but a voice
or a darkness invisible enfolded in the deeper dark
of the arms Plutonic, and pierced with the passion of dense
gloom,
among the splendour of torches of darkness, shedding
darkness on the lost bride and her groom.
