As a writer, Ayn Rand was a mediocre novelist.
As a philosopher, she was a mediocre novelist.
The characters are tissue-thin and unrealistic; the dialog is terrible; the pacing is like watching a long-drawn out cricket game with no runs.
The premise is interesting.
There are some good set pieces and the semi-scifi setting is actually interesting.

The problem with Ayn Rand's philosophy is that it's dependent on egotistical delusion to exist. For something called 'objectivism' it's about the biggest blatantly false masturbatory fantasy of self-importance.

It really only appeals to the deeply insecure, afraid-of-failure types.

As a story about about a kinda-scifi railway it sustains itself ok.

The writing isn't great. Many of the characters are straw-men with bad arguments. The philosophy is just … weak.

It is a very fast, easy read. The main story is 'OK' and will help you keep turning pages. All other aspects are sub-par.

Does anyone else think the chapter in which the train gets destroyed, because everyone keeps passing on the responsibility to the next person, is amazingly well written? I think it was called "The Moratorium on Brains". But I was just in awe when reading that chapter

Only in comparison to the rest of the book. The part about everyone dying for doing something wrong is actually a little terrifying, seeing as everything else in the book is basically an outlet for her views. The main characters lead to a lot of deaths among the general population, among people who weren't really 'bad', so to speak, just by doing what they were doing. It's kinda terrifying that she just sweeps that under the rug.

That being said, if you want to read it, I would recommend reading up on the history of the USSR. I really disliked Atlas Shrugged until I learnt about how crazy shit was back then. Now I just think it's a pretty stupid / overrated book.

Rand's philosophy aside, I hear she is a terrible, terrible writer. I have read only excerpts from Atlas Shrugged, and it may have been cherry-picked by critics, but if passages like those - which can be considered nothing but atrocities to aesthetics - can make it into her magnum opus, it does not bode well for the rest of it.
