I have a 17 year old sister who I think is quite smart and has potential but is lost (as all teenagers are I suppose). Her birthday is coming up and I want to give her a book to give her the right direction in life.
I thought of a number of books but realized they all have non-existent or just two-dimensional female characters. I want her to see some role model.
Suggestions for what I can get her? Preferably some classic.
Not shit like Sylvia Plath, obviously.
i see, strong woman/human. yeah, maybe some introduction to feminism, and maybe some nietzsche if she likes philosophy and/or the literature-like way he writes; thats what pops up in my midn
Thus Spake Zarathustra.
Read it when I was 14, absolutely rocked my socks off.
Stendhal. Currently reading The Red and The Black. Very nice.
My standard shout outs to Le Guin and Tove Jansson.
This kind of thread pops up far too often not to be a meme, but whatever.
kek I thought I was a bad brother, I highly dislike my sister and ignore her all the time and she does the same back. And call her a cunt since she's fucked me over and stolen money etc. too many times for me to like her. But I still want her to get fucking married and not be some wageslave breadwinner. If anything I'm pretty nice to her when she's dating a guy I could see as a good influence and might marry her.
Maybe I'm reading this wrong and it's not that you don't want her to get married, but still, that should be one of her major considerations once she's through college. Unless she's incredibly bright, she's not going to be the next Woolf, or a CEO, or even if she goes mentally ballistic, the next Emily Dickinson. Most likely you're setting her up to be a soulless, depressed Condoleeza Rice.
Dick's work was often criticized for its flat, stereotypical female characters, so Angel may represent his effort to prove he could create a rich and believable feminine voice.
I once went to a very cosy little bookstore in my town to get a book for my sister's 17th birthday. I asked the clerk for advice, and she suuggested I buy The Fault In Our Stars
I fucking bought it
And she loved it
congratulations, it's heavily implied in your post that I'm making shit up. This is odd despite the fact that it's entirely believable. Regardless of your intent, I have attached my censored student ID, and the censored reverse side of my military dependent ID (my birthday in July 1998 is listed in the box at top left). I hope this evidence is satisfactory. The tone of my previous post was purely intended for bant purposes as I have been spending a good amount of time on /int/ lately. Clearly I am no austrailian, but nonetheless, I did manage to buttfluster at least one anon. I look forward to the ban.
