I'd like to read about Jung. Where should I start? Keep in mind that I have no formal background in psychology.

Thanks. Maybe I should also note that I am particularly interested in his ideas on human culture and the collective unconscious

Man and His Symbols, I think. He wrote it specifically to be a general overview of his work for a neophyte, so you could read it and drill down from there.

His sermons of the dead are fucking based if you like the mystical-psychological angle. You might need some familiarity with Gnosticism though just to get then details, since his writing is vivid enough either way

His Tibetan Book of the Dead commentary is spot on, I highly recommend it.

Probably the best place to start, Joseph Campbell's editing, commentary, and compiling of Jung's work is god-tier.

OP the fact is that Jung was a terrible fucking writer. Great ideas, zero writing ability. So #1 place to go is his pseudo-autobiography entitled Memories, Dreams, Reflections. It's sort of an autobio that was compiled out of hundreds of hours of interviews. The author them formed it into a book. It's pretty cool.

Other than that, yeah 7 sermons to the dead is super sique.

His commentaries on eastern philosophy are interesting in their own right, but Jung had no knowledge of any eastern traditions as such (he didn't know Sanskrit or Chinese), so his stuff has nothing to do with actual eastern philosophy.

J.J. Clarke's book, Jung and Eastern Thought, is excellent.

Honestly most people don't actually read Jung. There's so much secondary literature that's really good that slogging through his nonsensical prose is something best left to Jung scholars.

IMHO.

He wrote man and his symbols for that exact reason, please don't let it go to waste.
