The french and footnotes are killing me!
>footnotes
hardly any
>the French
>he doesn't speck French
It's pretty much same as English.
>>7587269
>He didn't get the Briggs translation
it's only really noticable in the first 100 pages or so, after that it's mostly smooth sailing. what later was annoying though was leo's writing about the science of history and war, because he kept repeating himself all the time, and give excessive amount of analogies for simple concepts
What do you mean by French?
Are you telling me that the entire thing isn't translated into English?
>>7587269
>doesn't understand french
bet you can't read latin or ancient greek either
fucking plebs
Anyone watching the new BBC dramasation with Classic Paul Dano?
Guys give me an honest answer, what's better war and peace or anna karenina?
>>7588607
War and Peace
>>7588607
War and Peace is the greatest novel ever made.
>>7588650
No it isn't.
>>7588607
Gah that's a fucking hard question. If you put a gun to my head I'd say War and Peace but I personally prefer Anna.
>>7588607
Anna Karenina
>>7588607
Anna Karenina, but they're different types of work. War and Piece is definitely overlong, the writing is more accessible, the only daunting thing about it is the length.
He didn't get the Maude.
>>7588603
yes it's good
>>7588652
yes it is
>>7588925
No, it isn't.
>>7588927
Yes it is.
>>7588929
No, it really isn't.
>>7588931
YES IT REALLY IS.
>>7588939
No, it isn't. You know why?
Because Moby-Dick is the greatest book ever written.
>>7588574
>it's only really noticable in the first 100 pages or so
>only 100 pages
Nigga, thats like a month of reading.
>>7588941
>book
>implying the best prose is on the same level as the best poetry.
>>7588607
anna karenina by far (I love w&p, btw)
>>7588959
Are you saying War and Peace or Moby-Dick is poetry?
>>7588959
Implying and outright saying now. It's on level.
>>7587269
If you're old enough to post on this board, and still having trouble with W&P, I have bad news for you son.
>tfw you invade russia and the capital burns down and you're stick there for the winter
>>7588607
War and Peace is honestly one of the most entertaining books I have ever read. The longer the novel is, the more connected I feel to the characters.
My hands were literally shaking when Natasha cucked prince Andrei
>>7589061
>tfw you cross a river on horseback in an attempt to impress the emperor but he doesn't even notice you
>>7588944
low quality b8 muh nigger
omg there are too many characters you guyz i cant keep up!
>>7589631
I never take notes, but I had to when reading this book. So much happens.
honestly i am super glad that i read a translation that just fucking translated all the french into english and just threw the occasional french word in to get the concept of snootiness across without being all fucking coy about it and making you read it all in the footnotes
Don't worry about it anon. Most of the French is really simple and you don't need to read all of the footnotes, a lot (the majority?) of it is just for historical context.
Translate the French manually if you can't decipher it. Get absorbed in it.
why are you guys saying anna is better than w&p?
>>7587269
>Il ne peut pas comprendre le francais
Next you'll tell me you had to translate the latin
>>7591029
Anna is a perfect novel but W&P transcends the novel if that makes sense
its like Nabokov expects everyone to be fluent in Russian and French
