Dan Abnett's "Gaunt's Ghosts" is a great intro series for the fluff (look for the first omnibus, "The Founding," of the first three books). His "Eisenhorn" series is also great. Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain are endlessly badass as well.

>>7582562

Oh, you know. The usual I guess. I was just trying to point out to >>7582520 >>7582545 this anon how utterly silly he sounded and how much I utterly disdain his answers to everything. The saddest part of it all is that no matter what any of us say and no matter how little he gets his penis sucked on by no girls with big and beautiful tits will he ever think that he's in the wrong. He'll even sit in the same room and masturbate using his tears as lube as he watches another get sucked on by a pretty girl with the big and the beautiful tits and he'll cry louder as the other man cums into her mouth and it dribbles down her chin and this makes him cum all over his chest. And then the pretty girl with the big and beautiful tits will laugh at him as she wipes up the other man's cum off her chin with her finger and licks it up just to make sure she gets every drop, and she'll turn to that crying anon and tell him to quit being such a squibbledy wibbledy little bitch and make him eat his own cum from his chest using a baby spoon. And he'll still think he's never wrong.

'tis a pity, really.

oh well.

What're you reading atm, Anon?
>>
It by Stephen King is the closest to literary fiction than anything else King has ever written. Despite genre tropes. I say this mostly because the language and characters. It's his only book that, to me, nearly every sentence just feels honest. Just composition of the sentences, and really simple once too, make me just FEEL. And the characters are actually really real. All other books I've read by King, especially the Stand, all the characters just seem flat and undeveloped (or archetypes).
>inb4 pleb
>>
>>7582641

>what DID Christopher Hitchens flaccid cock taste like?

Huzzah! You're a very funny, anon. I like you indeed. No, I never did nibble on old Alfred, as Hitch liked to call his member (get it? Hitch's cock? Hitch-cock? Alfred? Because of HITCH'S COCK?! - great fun we had). And he never nibbled on mine. The girls told me he did love to dip his prick into a glass of whiskey or scotch and he would tighten his kegel muscles and try to drink the booze up his urethra. He was never able to get that to work apparently but he had heard some monks somewhere (I believe they were Belgian) had perfected the technique. Regardless, he would do that before they would blow him so he didn't have to clean it up. So, although I never had a go at it, I'd imagine old Alfred tasted a bit like a 12 year old Scotch blend.

I've always liked harry potter books and got defensive about them when people seem to randomly shit on them. (they have valid flaws, but when some ones argument boils down to "BUT TRIX ARE FOR KIDS!" they can go suck on a landmine.)

>>7582864

I went to the Yale University bookstore and bought and read a copy of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." I suffered a great deal in the process. The writing was dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs." I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing.

But when I wrote that in a newspaper, I was denounced. I was told that children would now read only J.K. Rowling, and I was asked whether that wasn't, after all, better than reading nothing at all? If Rowling was what it took to make them pick up a book, wasn't that a good thing?

It is not. "Harry Potter" will not lead our children on to Kipling's "Just So Stories" or his "Jungle Book." It will not lead them to Thurber's "Thirteen Clocks" or Kenneth Grahame's "Wind in the Willows" or Lewis Carroll's "Alice."

Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

Our society and our literature and our culture are being dumbed down, and the causes are very complex. I'm 73 years old. In a lifetime of teaching English, I've seen the study of literature debased. There's very little authentic study of the humanities remaining. My research assistant came to me two years ago saying she'd been in a seminar in which the teacher spent two hours saying that Walt Whitman was a racist. This isn't even good nonsense. It's insufferable.

Nigga that added nothing to your argument but "I'm kinda in love with myself because my farts smell soooo good"
>continuing to argue that "bu-but those books are better than these!
well tough shit.
And yes Potter started out a bit painful. The first book in particular was clearly aimed at very small children and trying to analyse it to such a degree is laughable when it clearly is just a few years away from "I want my hat back".

The quality improves a bit over the course of the series to a degree where young adults and if interested in magical fantasy, fully grown adults can find enjoyment in it. Like Kings work it is not meant to be literary masterpieces but as something enjoyable to procrastinate with. An enjoyable little story.

Sitting here and saying: "I would prefer Dostoyevsky or Kafka" doesn't make you look smart, It just makes you look like a cunt.

This thread right here is proof that /lit/ is ruined.

Ever since that fucking faggot redditor posted Hypersphere to /r/4chan and that faggot who forced a new book that was written and published 2 days, redditors flocked to /lit/ and ruined it.

The one place where I could maturely discuss a topic on this site has been ruined.
>>

For instance, this post. I imagine him sweating profusely as he swivels his chair forward, knocking over several empty cans of Mountain Dew, and frustratingly searching his images file folder, his face soaked in grease and sweat, empty buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken stacked one inside another next to his anime mousepad, and posting the picture, only to continue scouring for more posts with a squinted eye, searching for whomever else he can call out, to justify his lonely existence.

I'm re-reading Dubliners and thoroughly enjoying it. The prose is fantastic and I feel dense for not being identify why exactly I love it but I think it's something sublte about Joyce's style. As I said earlier I started Dune as a side book and I've not been enjoying it much and I'm also just finishing a book of Robert Aickman short stories that are wonderfully unsettling and creepy. He's a master of not giving you enough information to unsettle you as a reader. Reminds me of Ligotti. I'm also dipping into The Golden Bough which is hard going but very rewarding. Thanks for asking.

I'm sure I'll be denounced as a pleb now.
>>
>>7583231
You are autistic if you interpreted it that way.

Literature is measured by the quality of the content. Literature can take on any form, whether it's a physical book or a pdf.

A book however, cannot always be considered literature.

Yes. 14 -yr -old me read Male Cosmo and thought 'oh, I get why people move on from fantasy to Real Literature.'
>>
>>7583337
The simple beauty of the prose and the painted pictures are the most important parts, poetry should be a very immanent art, you don't have to worry about the chartist movement's effect on Woolf's verses before you find them pretty. Poetry is often an attempt to artificially conure up the full mental feeling of a single emotion or momeny, with all it's intermingled references and images and implications and puns. Artificially rendering something like the method of the mind and doing it prettily, the 'meaning' ought to be secondary, like in a painting.

everyone is convinced they are the patrician '4channer' and every one with an opinion countering theirs is a plebian 'redditor'
>>

It's been like that for years. I come back from time to time and it's the same bullshit. Low self esteem faggots that have nothing to offer other than their pathetic need to feel superior without actually providing any insight in to anything at all.

People keep claiming that /lit/ is getting worse but that's not what's happening, /lit/ is a phase that people go through when they first discover that there are a lot of really good fucking books in this world that are better than what they read before. They think this discovery somehow makes them better than people that haven't made this discovery yet. They sit around posting nothing more than "I like good things, you like bad things" for a while then they get tired of that and move on. They get to a place where they can just enjoy their good things without the need to show off and they realize that no one here actually wants to discuss books, most people come here to list off books they like, books that they think they're supposed to like, and books they dislike or think they should dislike.

Maybe you got something good from /lit/. I hope you did, I didn't but I got over my need to validate my tastes before 4chan even existed. I probably would've loved it here when I was 14 or so but /lit/ just isn't very good and you will realize that soon and you will most likely be much happier when that happens.
>>
>>7584764
>They sit around posting nothing more than "I like good things, you like bad things" for a while then they get tired of that and move on.

Before it got shitty though 75% of threads were decent threads about specific authors, books, philosophers, questions or literary movements where people had good conversation.

Anyone that acts like the deterioration in posting quality has been imaginary must not have spent much time here before.
