I've read samples of his work that are at the same literary level as fifty shades of grey.

Tuf Voyaging is pretty good and the beginning of asoiaf series is good also. Too bad he has no idea where's hes going with that one and it'll keep him from writing anything else before he dies.

Entertaining. He's good at writing plotlines. His prose isn't atrocious, but not great either.

As great as ASOIAF is, it is definitely a cash cow and he is milking it for all it's worth.

That said, he is a very good writer and certainly significant to fantasy, sci fi, and to a lesser extent historical fiction. Fevre Dream is my favorite vampire story, and while I haven't read very much of his sci fi stuff the couple short stories I have are pretty good.

Not literature and just as shit as Harry Potter. Don't even consider myself a "patrician" or anything of that sort, but it's terrible.
