Does /lit/ read comic books/graphic novels?
>>
Manga is lovely.

Later Maruo stuff is shit.
>>
They should take all the graphics out of a graphic novel and print just the words in standard book format. Then just about anyone would be able to see how weak the writing is, how it doesn't even amount to being a short story and how hackneyed the plot is. No one reads graphic novels, they look at the pictures.

>/lit/ is one person

Many of us do, but it's difficult to get a conversation about them off the ground without someone angrily yelling about it being off-topic, which is true but it's not as if /co/ wants to talk about Alison Bechdel.

http://studygroupcomics.com/main/haunter-part-1-by-sam-alden/
^Read this please, it's very good.
>>
>>7562071
No one here should want to talk about her either
>>
>>7562070
man wth the graphics and the writings are complementary
>>
>>7562080
In the same way peanuts in a bar are complimentary and not just a bait and switch to make you drink more. The words are there to make the pictures clearer and easier to digest they are the secondary purpose of the 'novel'.
>>
>>7562100
bait
>>
>>7562070
Same is true for literally all popular music lyrics
>>
>>7562047
I do

Been reading Suehiro Maruo and Junji Ito, kinda feel like getting back to Enki Bilal's stuff if I can get it. Also, anyone able to point me to a place where I can find scans of Jodorowsky's comics? Overpriced as shit.

Also I'd like to hear what people think about Tsutomu Nihei and Transmetropolitan, I remember asking a while back and not getting much of an answer, memes notwithstanding

>>7562071
That comic was dumb lol
>>
Hellblazer has a bit more substance than the average non literary release. I enjoy it.
>>
Hellboy is good, great artwork and cool lore
Watchman is pretty nice I guess
I liked Scott Pilgrim and Full Metal Alchemist as a teenager

I don't see myself reading comics any time in the future tho
>>
>>7562071
That fishy statue of liberty is dumb to miss her repeatedly at such a close range. They're both dumb for letting their bowstrings get wet.

Nice colours though.
>>
Sequential art is a legitimate form of storytelling but it's just as not developed as writing, or even film. I seriously recommend looking up the methods of Watchmen people often miss, it's considered symetry and colour
>>
>>7562047
Carl Barks and Don Rosa are pretty neato. Same goes for Hergè and Uderzo/Goscinny.

It has to be a well established classic like Watchman or Preacher or something, I dont just read new stuff for fun.

Pic related is one of the best books I ever read.
>>
>>7562115
I read all of "Blame!" and liked it. Odd because the dialogue was extremely sparse and what there was of it was hackneyed exposition but the mood of the drawings carries it all along anyway.
>>
>>7562159
Hellblazer is great. Probably my favorite comic
>>
The manga Berserk by Kentaro Miura is the greatest comic ever made.
>>
>>7563176
I mean, compared to it, Cerebus is just the second greatest comic, and by some distance. THAT's saying something.
>>
I'm reading Akira Vol. 1 now but it's more my interest in the art than the literature. In fact a lot of my reading is more founded in my interest in visual art(being an artist myself) than in literature itself.
>>
>>7562942
10/10 art, but the story really goes nowhere, and the characters get almost no development.
Sidonia feels the opposite but I couldn't get the hang of it either.
>>
>>7563176
Ending never ever
>>
>>7563205
Seriously, there have to be like at least 100 chapters left
>>
I like manga more than American comics but both mediums are nice. I've got Black Hole by Charles Burns and A Drifting Life by Yoshihiro Tatsumi on my backlog to read. Looking forward to both.

>>7562541

Uzumaki was fun, just for the artwork in the later parts and when they get to the spiral city. You should read Gyo, I didn't think the concept of walking fish would work or Ito would make it interesting but he pulled it off quite well.

>>

>>

/a/ deletes Naruto threads, even though Naruto is a fucking Japanese manga.

Still doesn't change the fact that there are board for comics. this is hugely off-topic.

If on-topic threads like Naruto are deleted, why should your off topic thread remain? you shitting up the board.
>>
>>7563211
There are like 10 demons that would take many chapters to defeat, on top of the whole Falconia city and the Elfheim part that just started.

Getting to the Griffith vs Guts fight should take like 150 chapters at the very least if he doesn't rush it or dies before that.

Yes OP I do read comics
Sometimes manga too

If you're looking for one of the best comics I've read I always pick Asterios Polyp
If you want my personal favorite I have to say Ghost World

>>7563266
/co/ is just such shit though
One of the worst boards I've ever browsed

The only thing they have going for themselves is that they have an okay recommendation tumblr for people who are new to comics and just want to read the good shit
Everything else about that board is so insufferable though
>>
>>7563350
I think if it's just a steady progression towards the end at this point with no more side stories, then it could wrap up satisfactorily in about 100 chapters.
>>
>>7562047
Words barely have a place in comic book. Have too much of them and you get a graphix novel like this.

Visual mediums should really cut the shit when it comes to writing.

If someone would excise all the horrible attempts at 'postmodern' Shakespeare/Crowley paraphrasing it would be decent.

>>7563419
That was Brian Talbot, but he belongs with other pretentious brit writers such as Moore, Morrison, Gaiman. Graphix novels were the worst thing to happen to comic books apart from American censorship act.

Thankfully continental Europe and especially Japan have been leaps and bounds above western trash.
>>
>>7563350
IMO they can spend about 30-40 chapters in Elfhelm with all the main characters resolving a bunch of their problems and learning a lot of things about the world we didn't know yet, have about 10-20 chapters tying up loose ends with side characters like Rickert and the Bakiraka (maybe others?), and then have a good 40-50 chapters for the final act of the story (incl. things like flashbacks for God Hand, Skull Knight, etc.).
>>
>>7563428
I disagree with you on Moore
He is pretentious but he still set a standard that most comic artists never attain

Also graphix were healthy in a way
It began the decensorship of comics

Besides they were basically visual novels and had about the same impact on the medium as VNs on manga
>>
>>7563442
I'm excited to see how the time-dilation on Elfhelm affects the story. WIll rickert be a grown man by the time Guts and co get back? I'm guessing that Guts will return and lead grown up rickert and the bakiraka clan into falconia against griffith, then some demon BS will happen with skull knight and the whole city gets sacrificed. it will be soo sick dude
>>
>>7563471
Not so sure about that last part, but I'm sure Skull Knight isn't too happy about Falconia for a couple of reasons
>>
>>7562070
The writing doesn't need to be strong enough to stand alone. It is a graphic novel because it uses the graphics, and the artwork is as much part of the overall piece as the writing is. Moreso in most cases.
>>
>>7563196
I think all the "characters" were subroutines in abandoned computing complex, so it made sense to me when they developed not a bit. possibly I overthought things and he just isnt a great writer.

Basically everything under the Vertigo imprint is worth reading. Manga like Berserk, Vagabond, Eden - It's an Endless World and Planetes can be as much as - or more - satisfying than most of the fiction literature we have nowadays (and have their literary merits, of course).

>>
>>7563467
Listen, I still love From Hell and Killing Joke is good too. Swamp Thing makes Sandman look even worse than it actually is and is a good example of how someone talented can take generic capeshit and turn it into something interesting. But as his popularity grew, so did the need to spout his solipsistic/occult mumbo jumbo and try to peddle it as an original thought. I have no idea why the whole Brit wave I mentioned ended up in post-Crowleyana, I really don't. I suggest you read the whole pic related, it's so embarrasing that I'm starting to favor Warren fucking Ellis over him.

The mad genius of comics would have been booted out of epistemology 101. Even A Camel Rides Again (which I thought was a joke for the good part of reading it) sounds like a philosophical work after Moore gives you a piece of his mind.
>>
>>7563176
>>7564389
In my opinion Conviction Arc is the best storyline in history of the medium and it probably transfers to the art too. Been on the steady decline since.

If you anons haven't, try Slaine because it's the Euro equivalent in terms of glorious art style.

>>
>>7565206
>and try to peddle it as an original thought
When did Moore ever do that?
Also, I fail at guessing what point of dogma of yours could be strained beyond tolerance by that pic
>>
>>7564389
>>7565215
People only think it's on the decline because there hasn't been quite as much violence or melodrama and the character progression has been more subtle. In reality, the art is even more beautiful now than it's ever been, and the seeming relative slowness of the plot is clearly just a calm before the storm.
>>
>>7565401
No.
>>
>>7562115
Transmetropolitan doesn't have that great of a plot but the humor of the Hunter S. Thompsonesque main character makes it worth reading. If you're not enjoying it after a couple of issues then drop it and move on.
>>
>>7562159

You've obviously never looked at Moore's scripts. If anything he's the one carrying artists, not the other way around, and that's why what he puts out is more than merely well-planned text partitions. What do you know of Gibbons' other works? And Williams makes no secret of who influenced his layouts, there's an anthology you can look at if you want to see the shift happen in his art for cape publishers throughout the period he worked on Promethea.
