I want to transition from anime to literature because anime sucks.
My favorite anime is Evangelion, please give me some recommendations.
You're asking what the Evangelion of literature is?
>>5997350
I just want something that fits my taste, I don't know a shit about literature
Be more specific OP and then maybe we can help.
Infinite Jest
>>5997341
The Tatami Galaxy
>>5997341
The Bible. Eventually get into Hegel and Kierkegaard, since Evangelion is all about the Knight of Faith vs The Absolute Spirit.
>>5997341
Slaughterhouse 5
lit has a entry level lsit
go and read it
my recomendations are bnw, animal farm, 1984,notes from underground and steppenwolfe
>>5997341
Welcome to the NHK
>>5997341
>My favorite anime is Evangelion
Then Gravity's Rainbow.
Both are incomprehensible, pretentious, overrated and ultimately meaningless.
>>5997563
Gravity's Rainbow is only incomprehensible if you're an idiot.
Obviously there's no legitimate way to transfer the first interest to the next, but because I love Evangelion I'll try to select a recommendation for you, OP.
On a whim, you should read Cormac McCarthy.
Outer Dark, Suttree, Child of God, Blood Meridian.
>>5997595
What are you on about
fedoras LOVE Evangelion
OP, you have a taste in anime, not literature. Don't expect to find something that will match your taste in a different medium. What you like in anime may not be found, or at least, not conveyed in a similar fashion in literature.
>>5997567
But is pretentious, doesn't present any interesting views and is glorified because of it's random gibberish moments.
Well, maybe the original version has something in it and it was lost in translation but I don't think I want to reread it in English when there is a lot of better books in world.
t: not the anon you were answer ing to
>>5997613
It's true.
I went to the UK premiere of Evangelion 3.33, and at least half the audience had a 3DS and a fedora. During the 10 minutes before the film starts, everyone was on their DS doing the streetpass thing.
There was a really tall ferdora tipper sitting right in front of me, who refused to take it off his hat during the entire movie, blocked my fucking view, the prick.
After spending all the time on 4chan hearing about them, it was quite surreal.in hindsight, I wish I brought my 3DS though
>>5997350
I'm glad someone else caught this, at least OP is being subtle this time.
>>5997563
If you found Eva incomprehensible then you're an idiot.
Dune
>>5997632
Oh god reading gravity's rainbow in any language besides English
I don't even know how they possibly translated it
>>5997341
>My favorite anime is Evangelion
Let me guess, you're white too huh?
>>5999092
It's probably almost as pointless to translate as poetry
Tetsujin 28-go remake is the best show in the mecha genre
>>5999077
I like anime fine, but I can't get on the same page as people who pretend its some kind of elevated medium. Like yeah some of them are fun to watch, but so many people sperg out so much that they can't call a spade a spade.
>>5999115
Give me some tv shows that are even close to the best of anime
>>5999159
the sopranos is the evangelion of TV
>>5999159
First give me the best of anime that you want to make a comparison to.
Also
>Someone on a board about literature says anime is good and entertaining but that it isn't a high medium of art
>Butthurt anime pro responds by comparing anime to TV shows for some reason as if either one is a high medium of art
>>5997341
>Nobody said Childhood's End
Even Anno said he took inspiration from it
>>5999176
> Aeon Flux uses it to contort facial expressions in radical ways to express things the human face realistically can't
holy shit shut up about aeon flux already i swear this is like the 20th time i've seen you post this
>>5997479
steppenwolfe +1
i would suggest Memoirs of Hadrian
In all seriousness, Dostoevsky. The Brothers Karamazov's grand themes of the human condition as told through long monologues that intersect with the story may interest you if that's what you love about Evangelion. The depth and struggles of the characters should be right up your alley. I say this because I used to be obsessed with the show and Dostoevsky was my introduction into truly appreciating literature.I still think Evangelion is one of the greatest works of popular culture of the 20th century. Flawed, yes, but also brilliant in ways Anno probably never intended.Btw, Kaworu = Prisoner from The Grand Inquisitor. Wrote a paper in high school about this once.
>>5997341
Watch Madoka
>>5999654
Not OP here, but just watched the show/End of Eva in the past couple months and enjoyed it...
Can I ask if you've still got the paper to share, or in broad strokes what your points were?
>>5999904
Yeah, I still remember parts of it. It was for my AP English class Senior year.
Kaworu's role in starting Third Impact in order to resolve humanity's conflicts via Instrumentality as well as his refusal to do so mirrors how Christ was meant to absolve the unfulfilled "limits of humanity" in The Grand Inquisitor. Both SEELE/Gendo and the Inquisitor believe that mankind, too weak for the power of freedom, can instead be replaced by civilization/progress/technology acting as God to remedy these problems instead. This is more appropriately represented in NGE as the Eva series and Rei, both creations meant to be human imitations of holy power (the Angels), as opposed to the holy imitating the profane (Kaworu and Christ). Instead of bringing about the kind of absolution that SEELE/The Catholic Church intends, they bring humanity freedom to resolve these tasks through the ability of Christ-like love.
No Longer Human
Blood Meridian
The Stranger
Pretty much just the entry level /lit/ books
>>5999510
god, this needs to be updated. I've got nothing against most those books but they don't get brought up on /lit/ anymore.
>>6000575
somebody posted a decent update of this recently with Lot 49 and Dubliners, I think.
also call me whatever for noticing this but I also remember that it hadno female authors (the current chart at least has one)
>because anime sucks
>>6000558
Well fuck me, that's a pretty great comparison - I've got some thinkin' to do.
Thanks for sharing.
>>5997697
You should have politely pointed out that it's rude to wear a hat inside.
>>6000666
Because Eva and LoGH are common in anime
Also hi Satan
>>5999108
That isn'tG Gundam
>>5999542
I literally cannot think of a single thing Eva and Childhood's End have in common except a collective transcendence ending.
>>5997567
Same with Evangelion.
>>5999096
Is anyone on 4chan not?
>>6002054
Yes
>>6002064
I see.
>>5997567
Pfff
>>5999115
Lain is better than any cyberpunk lit, but all cyberpunk lit is utter trash to begin with
Actually, Lain might be the GR of anime
>>6000564
there is a No Longer Human manga as well
I mostly read literature and don't know where to start with anime. I enjoyed Evangelion and Lain but just really can't get into others. Should I even bother?
>>6002224
The Tatami Galaxy
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
And Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann for mindless fun
>>5997341
>Evangelion
kek
>hear a lot of good stuff about evangelion
>decide to give it a try
>it's mostly just the story of a really wimpy, whiny faggot that has to do something but whines the entire time and ruins everything for everybody because he's such a coward
>can't continue because he's just so insufferable
>>6002557
The guy listed Eva and Lain as the only two anime he enjoyed. Most of the stuff you put on there is a bit too low brow to really fit in with that, except Jin-Roh.
I'd say:
Texnolyze
Gankutsuou
GitS:SAC
Mononoke
Planetes
Jin-Roh
And yes, everybody likes (most) everything by Ghibli and Kon.
>>5999558
Back to reddit you fucking loser
>>6002248
Yeah heaven forbid a chronically depressed 14 year old doesn't jump at the chance to be mind raped by 300 meter tall nuke laser throwing abominations from billions of years in the past.
Shinji might cry a lot but Jesus.
>>6002248
this
>omg its so amazing
>>hate all the characters
>>ALL
>>6002248
i saw just because i wanted momcest from shinji and misato
sadly it never happened
>>5999080
What horrible recommendations. Not to say the shows are but, but they are very niche.
>>6002224
Also, Oshii, Jin Roh got mentioned, but he directed things like Angel's Egg, Gosenzosama Banbanzai, The Sky Crawlers and the Patlabor movies.
If you're into the existential mecha subgenre (apparently, it is a thing), try RahXephon and Zegapain, Bokurano and Betterman.
Lain is part of a trilogy of sorts, with Texhnolyze and Haibane Renmei being the other two shows, so you should check them out as well.
Some other shows/movies you could try:
Mushishi
Shoujo Kakumei Utena
Ghost in the Shell movies and SAC, skip Arise
Kino no Tabi
Dennou Coil
Monster
Master Keaton
Katanagatari
Kaiba and other shows Maasaki Yuasa directed (Mind Game, Tatamy Galaxy, Kemonozume, Ping Pong)
Planetes
Spring and Chaos
Night on the Galactic Railroad
Flag
Tekkonkinkreet
Giant Robo
Saraiya Goyou
Baccano
Aoi Bungaku
If you don't mind older animation, check out Legend of the Galactic Heroes and works of Dezaki Osamu (Ashita no Joe, Rose of Versailles, Ie Naki Ko, Onii-sama e), Gundam UC (79 and Zeta, ZZ if you're up for goofball comedy, but otherwise skip to Char's Counterattack).
>>6002248
>>it's mostly just the story of a really wimpy, whiny faggot that has to do something but whines the entire time and ruins everything for everybody because he's such a coward
This is the whole mecha genre though anon, don't you know?
>>5997341
Read Evangelion manga.
>>5997341
>>5999510
>One Flew Over The Cuckoo Cukcoo's Nest
Well done, /lit/.
>>5997341
well tell us what exactly struck most deeply in evangelion. this is often not what is most easily recalled.
fucking vaguely concealed copy pasta might actually facilitate good discussion fcuck
>>5997341
I know VNs are still anime-style but try reading reading Subarashiki Hibi when the translation becomes available, I assure you it will be worth in the end, and it'll be good to get used to reading too.
>>6005267
>fcuck
>>6005267
>there are people on this board who haven't seen EVA
Don't worry about /a/. They're more interested in the smells that come off of feet.
>>6002557
VHS is still better in Jap, the Count and the heroine have mediocre English VAs. Strangely Bloodlust had a better English cast and better animation but was worse overall for obvious reasons.
OP, read Mardock Scramble
They adapted it into a movie trilogy a while back, but I've only seen the first one.
Also, read more manga. It's a superior medium to anime anyway.
>>6006527
I am curious as well.
>>6007520
>>6006527
A couple were by me, and I was banned not too long after posting them. Could that have gotten them taken down?
If you're curious, the ban came from an ASOIAF thread where I made a fairly normal post and recieved a one month ban for Ban Evasion, which is strange because I've never been banned before.
>>6002248
do you even read books? There are plenty of characters in the western canon that are infinitely more insufferable from Shinji.
In any case, "I just HATE the characters" isn't a valid reason to discount a work of art.
>>6007886
than Shinji*

OP, watch Shiki-Jitsu and Love & Pop by Anno, they're both great movies.
And read The Bible.
>>6008727
Are these all movies? I got some downloading to do.
>>6009551
Not everything here is a movie. The best thing you can find in that list is The Tatami Galaxy, watch it
Read some Lacan. No, joking, lol, you won't get it. If you REALLY want to read about lacanian concepts like the other/Other and the "lack" and all that 20th century psych, some people say our good Zizek is a good intro to Lacan.
If you want fiction you'll have to say more. Psychoanalytical character development has been around for more than a century in literature.
>>6007904
Why is making an homage to a book cover different from any kind of homage?
>>6008727
Loved Love & Pop, Anno can actually direct human beings and I was impressed; but I wouldn't consider it so close to Evan, it's more of a Kare Kano kind of deal.
>>6007886
Sure it is! If the plot doesn't carry the story, the prose and writing feel weak, and the characters are unlikeable, what the hell is supposed to motivate me to keep watching?
>>6011235
You didn't like Rei or Misato?
Plebian.
>>6011252
>Waifutrash
Grow up, they're not real.
moby dick
>>5997341
I did the same with video games.
Don't want to start another animu thread so I'll ask it here
What literature is most similar to LoGH? Aside from the books it's based on.
I've heard it compared to War and Peace which I have yet to read
>>6011310
But video games arefun
>>6011322
So what games are you looking forward to in 2015? Because I've got (almost) nothing.
>>6011318
war and peace
don't binge it, just take in a chapter or two a day on top of your other reading
>>6011318
At one point I made this. But the similarities make more sense after you've read the book...
>>6011332
Not the anon you replied to.
MGSV is pretty much the only game coming out that I'm personally interested in.
>>6011332
The Witcher 3
MGS V
Majora's Mask remake
Gigantic (Some online MOBA game that looks good)
Titan Souls
HYper Light Drifter
Silent Hills (prob wont be until 2016 tho)
No Man's Sky
The Witness
I'm hyped for Bloodborne but I'm not buying a PS4 for one fucking game.
>>6011466
Yeah Bloodborne is about the only thing I'm hyped for, but PS4s are expensive.
Witcher 3 seems nice if I can fix my PC.
>>5999159
The sopranos and the wire are better than any anime. Also Curb your Enthusiasm has better comedy than anything.
Fargo, True detective, House of Cards, and Peaky Blinders have potential.
Fuck I really just replied to bait from 2 days ago. That got me good.
OP you should read Siddhartha by Hesse.
>>6011479
Toukiden Kiwami and God eater 2 rage burst are probably gonna be fantastic as well. They're not truly exclusive though, they're on the vita too.
>>6011569
Why do people always go to the Sopranos when talking about the pinnacle of TV? Best show coming thru.
Also the TV > anime argument is fucking retarded stop shoving your preferences down other's throats.
TV will never be able to surpass film, etc. etc. etc.
>>5997350
It's the Decameron, obviously.
>>6005259
That's a good book you fuck
>>6011466
So pumped for MM remake
>>6006909
Double on this one. 10 Billion days and 100 Billion nights is also good if you like ridiculous Japanese Science Fiction that meshes with Theological bullshit.
