Joyce
Fitzgerald
Faulkner
Pynchon
Bukowski

Joyce because he is fucking Joyce

Fitzgerald because he was the first writer who I was compelled to read the entire bibliography of, and enjoyed it all. He had some fuckin' prose, yo.

Faulkner for his ability to capture Southern Gothic in it's most epic potential.

Pynchon for his unorthodox style and his evolution of plot, theme, and he taught many, including me, the hard way that rules were meant to be broken in literature.

Bukowski for the heart, the realism, and the brutal unregulated honesty in saying whatever the fuck it is he wants to say

(favorites is a completely different list compared to who I think are the 5 greatest writers)

As somebody who read a fair amount of Bukowski, I agree. Bukowski's somebody who writes hard-boiled fiction, essentially, but the detective's unemployed. He only has heart because he writes everything around him as heartless, and he never shows himself as such. He's not realistic for the same reason. He might be honest, but if he is honest he's honest about himself, his own experiences, and he extrapolates from them to an entire world, the limits of which he never touched, or the touching of which he failed to express.

>the hard way that rules were meant to be broken in literature.

If you still think that, you're an immature idiot.

Inferior rules are broken to obey superior ones. That's all there is. Otherwise you're doing pomo shit that nobody cares about and isn't remotely interesting.

Breaking rules is what noobs do. You'd find it shit if a noob did the exact same thing that a master did.

That should tell you something.

Dean Koontz
Stephen King
Clive Cussler
HG Wells

It's not sad. Most c/lit/toris-lickers come here first, read books second, so all they read is DFW and Pynchon, and they understand nothing because they can't read at all, but they'll pretend they did to be one of the boys.

Out of the centuries of world literature, only about ten names are continuously discussed on this board, if you can call it a discussion.

Literature, discussed in a medium for memes, does not fare well.
