Back in college I would always wear a bandana and round glasses like DFW.

yeats got me into poetry desu

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

just get one of these:

Helen Vendler's "Poetry and Voices"
Society of Classical Poets "how to write classical poetry" (still gives you a good basis)
Lots of Yeats

In the Narnia books, why is it that every time Narnia is in trouble, they have to rely on a bunch of children from outside their universe to save their whole world? How is it that a bunch of normal children from our universe are somehow more powerful than anyone else in an entire parallel universe?

Because it makes for nice reading for normal children, you autistic retard
>>
I haven't read those books in over 20 years, but assuming what you say is the truth: why is it so hard to believe that our universe is more powerful than the other?
>>
>>9601215
Their universe has witches, magic, giants, centaurs, faeries, wytches, and magick. Yeah, our universe has bombs and guns, but these are just random children.

"as many people as possible should have as much say as is feasible over the direction their lives will take."

Liberalism, as an ideology, was birthed by the British empirical philosopher John Locke, who's ideas resonated with a disenfranchised European populace tired of the unfairness and lack of freedom they perceived monarchies were responsible for; a government, according to Locke, ought to be run by and for the people, not a king or queen who's right to rule was based in illogical religious sentiment.

Liberalism as an ideology has fluctuated throughout the years but most of its tenents still stand today; in the 21st century, liberals declare support for:
Globalized free markets
Individual rights
Multiculturalism
Social equality

It's an objective fact that liberal democracy has been proven to work and has resulted in more happiness and prosperity compared to its 20th century ideological critics, fascism and Marxism.

What books by liberals have you read recently, /lit/?

Have you ever actually read anything from Weird Tales? It was basically a workshop for amateur writers who didn't have any industry connections. Think of it like a really shitty 1940s Soundcloud. 95% of its published stories were boring, sloppy, or just plain stupid.
>>
>>9600945
I've read some of its stories. I'm not an expert on him by any stretch, but the few things I've read have been beautifully written and quite imaginative, even if it lacks the utter bleak weirdness of Lovecraft. Much better writter than Lovecraft in terms of prose, tho. Really beautiful, at least, like I said, the few things I've read.

Read the Flood/Martin translation. It retains the verse structure, unlike most translations. That one in the picture is the shitty Hari Krishna version that they hand out for free, I wouldn't read it. Also yeah it's really good
>>
fuck no. that translation was made by a sect to promote their interpretation and increase their influence. in fact the only reason you came across a copy of it is because they mass produce them and distribute them en masse, much like gideons bibles.

I think we exist in the Matrix based on the following argument:

Premise 1: Our universe is extremely complex
Premise 2: The universe is too complex for it to have been randomly created
Premise 3: Only extremely intelligent things (i.e. robots) can create something extremely complex
Premise 4: Everything we experience is just a string of subjective experiences that aren't real
Premise 5: Since we can't experience an objectively real reality, we're always in a virtual reality, whether it's with others or not
Conclusion: Robots created our universe and placed us all in a virtual reality together

>As we have seen, it is an essential characteristic of Dasein that, in its ordinary ways of engaging with other entities, it operates with a preontological understanding of Being, that is, with a distorted or buried grasp of the a priori conditions that, by underpinning the taking-as structure, make possible particular modes of Being. This suggests that a disciplined investigation of those everyday modes of engagement on the part of Dasein (what Heidegger calls an “existential analytic of Dasein”) will be a first step towards revealing a shared but hidden underlying meaning of Being. Heidegger puts it like this: whenever an ontology takes for its theme entities whose character of Being is other than that of Dasein, it has its own foundation and motivation in Dasein's own ontical structure, in which a pre-ontological understanding of Being is comprised as a definite characteristic… Therefore fundamental ontology, from which alone all other ontologies can take their rise, must be sought in the existential analytic of Dasein. (Being and Time 3: 33–4)
