Best ebook thread?

I prefer real books, but I also need an ebook because I'm going to be traveling and I don't have much space. I might buy a paperwhite.
>>

I have an Aura One and a paperwhite that is a few years old. I definitely prefer the kobo but you're not much worse off with the kindle. If you're just gonna sideload books with calibre there's not much difference.

i bought my wife a kindle voyage for mother's day and was surprised at how much i like e-reading. i got myself an aura one before father's day (so my wife wouldn't get me a kindle) and am waiting for it to arrive. i'm a big guy, so the size of the thing shouldn't deter me.

mostly, i'm excited and think i made the right call, but i'm worried about:
>having a laggy touch input
>not being able to translate phrases in-text

are these legitimate fears? how can you get it to translate phrases? could you list pros and cons?

Hello /lit/. The gist of this post is that I would like to read books about applied fascism. However, I believe the quality of this thread can be improved by justifying my decision about posting it here (and not about whether fascism is "bad"). If not, I'm sorry for wasting your time.

A few years ago I saw The Legend of Korra, a cartoon about a world that is basically an alternate version of Earth in the 1920's but with Low-to-Mid Fantasy level elemental kung-fu powers. To keep it brief: the last season's villain was a militaristic earth-power woman who, after succeeding in reuniting the now King-less territories of this world's China equivalent (in both size and cultural depictions), she decided to defy the United Nations and name herself the leader of this new fascist regime. Yes, this has clearly happened before in history. And yes, real-life examples would be more relevant and accurate to represent the fundamentals of a political movement. I'm just telling you the events that led me to indulge in this discussion.

Since this is genre fiction, and a children's cartoon no less, this politically-oriented plot had to be neatly tied in under 13 episodes while incorporating obligatory themes of teamwork, black/white morality, and action-driven events. To this end, the writers took the lazy way out and the woman started putting all non-Earth nationals in concentration camps. The phrase "Literally Hitler" comes to mind.

And so now I'm left with a sour taste in my mouth, about a story where I was presented with a compelling reason to acknowledge the validity of another political view, in a society where even Wikipedia (as a popular repository of knowledge) criticizes Fascism for the mistakes and lies of the people that tried implementing it, and not by the ideology itself.

If a platonic "perfect" leader existed, would Fascism work?
Would exploring this, or other relevant ideology-centered ideas help push Genre fiction into legitimacy?
Most developed countries push liberal democracy, but most citizens don't have the education, time or simply don't care to vote "properly", so this is clearly also a problem of a "good" ideology in a bad environment to be applied.

>If a platonic "perfect" leader existed, would Fascism work?
That begs the question: for whom and for what?
I think it's more of a spiritual movement than anything. Something like esprit de corps on a national scale.

I'll just leave this here.

Thanks, I'll check the link and Storm of Steel.
About your question, I'd assume it would just keep things focused by either writing him to always make the "right" decisions, or at least omit or hide their negative outcomes, without telling you outright.

This invariable ends up in the classic needs of the few or the many, so yeah I don't really know.

Know of any (preferably non powered) and would you try one if well written?

Joyce on Stephen Dedalus' cock:

>The ache of conscience ceased and he walked onward swiftly through the dark streets. There were so many flagstones on the footpath of that street and so many streets in that city and so many cities in the world. Yet eternity had no end. He was in mortal sin. Even once was a mortal sin. It could happen in an instant. But how so quickly? By seeing or by thinking of seeing. The eyes see the thing, without having wished first to see. Then in an instant it happens. But does that part of the body understand or what? The serpent, the most subtle beast of the field. It must understand when it desires in one instant and then prolongs its own desire instant after instant, sinfully. It feels and understands and desires. What a horrible thing! Who made it to be like that, a bestial part of the body able to understand bestially and desire bestially? Was that then he or an inhuman thing moved by a lower soul? His soul sickened at the thought of a torpid snaky life feeding itself out of the tender marrow of his life and fattening upon the slime of lust. O why was that so? O why?

That's good writing though, anon. Not his best, but to call it bad is absurdly ignorant.

You may as well call this bad too:
>In a strange room you must empty yourself for sleep. And before you are emptied for sleep, what are you. And when you are emptied for sleep, you are not. And when you are filled with sleep, you never were. I don't know what I am. I don't know if I am or not. Jewel knows he is, because he does not know that he does not know whether he is or not. He cannot empty himself for sleep because he is not what he is and he is what he is not. Beyond the unlamped wall I can hear the rain shaping the wagon that is ours, the load that is no longer theirs that felled and sawed it nor yet theirs that bought it and which is not ours either, lie on our wagon though it does, since only the wind and the rain shape it only to Jewel and me, that are not asleep. And since sleep is is-not and rain and wind arewas, it is not. Yet the wagonis, because when the wagon iswas, Addie Bundren will not be. And Jewelis, so Addie Bundren must be. And then I must be, or I could not empty myself for sleep in a strange room. And so if I am not emptied yet, I amis.

I just don't have the drive to write. I have a story, I think it's good, and I know what I want to happen, but I just can't seem to work up the ambition to continue writing.

I am about 12 pages in so far, but lately, I just feel so unmotivated.

Any tips or tricks from fellow authors?

If you don't enjoy writing you should probably stop for a while and reevaluate what you actually want to do. If you're not passionate about your writing it's going to be awful, regardless of how "good" your story is.

If you really need outside motivation, write for a contest that's ending soon. Then you'll have a tangible deadline to meet, and you'll care about the quality of your work.
>>
Hold off all the gay stuff you do, like anime, video games, beating off to waifus, all that until you achieve your writing goals for the day.

Or just be assured that there's like a 99% chance you have no talent whatsoever and are wasting your time.

I can't read. I always feel it's a chore. I get distracted very easily. I like visual stimuli. With that caveat, I would like to get into reading. I tried several times to no avail and I want to know what measures those with similar problems take to maintain discipline.

dislike all big bio attempts.
fav ones are just autobios by some officers or civillian witnesses: caulaincourt, marbot, de segur, gourgaud

all other projects usually cannibalize these sources anyway
