Names of the people I used to call friends. I legitimately can't remember them or their faces. It's been 7 years.

Well since this thread was a failure, let's salvage it by making it a general e-reading thread and talk about the general argument of e-ink vs. LCD. For instance, is it true that you retain less when you read on the latter?

So, uh...

Hypersphere is at the Museum of Modern Art.

Is it art?

Is it supposed to be a YA novel? It just seems like wish fulfillment for the author.

What are the books I should read to have interesting things to say to people? How do I actually be interesting, especially to girls my age?

I mainly read fiction books that I forget about soon. I may as well have read nothing. I'm currently reading guns, germs, and steel during my commute.

I see all philosophical axioms as arbitrary. I see facts as mere stamp collecting. I see pop sci as worthless but I'm too lazy to learn any of that stuff in depth. I have a STEM mastefs degree I disliked and couldn't talk about for 5 minutes if I tried. I haven't read all of Plato but I am certain that everything other than the death of Socrates is awful shit (just stuff asserted without proof, flailing within the unfalsifiable)

Apart from the laziness I don't even see the above as bad attributes. I am just honest, lazy, yet too unpretentious and genuine to try to seem anything more.

Why is 'The Iliad' so prominent in the western cannon? Yes, I am completely new to literature. I understand it's one of the first texts in the cannon and that its symbolism echoes through to the age of chaos we have now. But am I missing something even more fundamental?

Ignoring all its literally merit, the ancient Greeks held Homer in something like reverence, viewing his works as the foundation of their society, in much the same way as modern Europeans view the Bible, though they were not seen as religious texts.
>>
It's one of the first texts in the canon and its symbolism echoes through to the age of chaos we have now. It's also a wonderful work of art.
>>
You're missing the transition from an oral, "moving" tradition of myths to a written, "stable" canon of writings. In the former retelling and reinterpretation are the same the process, in the latter the text doesn't change meaningfully, because the words are written, so the interpretation is separate.

Poets would use Homer and Hesiod as the foundations for their education programs, and when Plato would show up in the Republic to criticize such pedagogical practices, he would still reference them for their cool authoritative sayings (like people in the American South reference verses from the Bible they memorize all the time).

Were you to go back in time and change the contents of the Iliad you would have a butterfly effect all over all literature in European languages.

Ideas of canon, writing, education are all part of the same set that is at the core of this civilization.

A historical Homer may have known he was a great poet and giving the Hellenes a national epic, to be recited in every polis, yet never would he imagine how much he was about to transform the world.

I'm looking to expand my knowledge of linguistics and re learn everything I know about language from the ground up and work up from fundamentals.

Question is, where do I start?
I tired defining and categorising things like nouns and verbs etc but I realised that there are more fundamental things I could begin with.

I'm assuming at least some of you must have done linguistics at a higher level, I would be grateful for any reliable material on the fundamentals of language.
Is there an objective hierarchy for language that I can follow?

Pic related, another thing I was planning on starting at

Just finished it. Wew. Had to read it in 2 chunks, first chunk mainly I was just digesting the aesthetic and the language and all of that style that was so influential. This sit down I tried to actually follow the plot but it was pretty nonsensical really.

I checked out Gibson's official twitter after apparently he had praise for Sasha Grey portraying Molly in some art exhibition/reading of the book, but it's actually just TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP which I 100% didn't see coming. Check it out:

https://twitter.com/GreatDismal

Anyway, what were your thoughts on Neuromancer? Did /lit/ read any of his other books? Also what's your opinion on Gibson purely as a thinker?

I could never finish that book, the stream of consciousness style pisses me off so much. Im glad my feelings towards Necromancer being a non-nonsensical novel has been validated. Thank you OP. Now might I suggest an actual Sci-Fi Book.

If there's such thing as a western canon to the point that it is ubiquitously taught and discussed in the highest forums, how is there no definitive list?

I think that they definitely can reach pretty high.

The message I provided collided within the melody
A metamorphosism reliving giving debauchery
The resurrection of a savior coming out of Nazareth where you could catch a laceration and a crucifixion
Under what condition d'you make the decision moving like it's in a mild position living at the bottom wishing I was with it
Couldn't tell the difference
So tired of giving the false opinions
My faith in the book that was written by other people
They probably worked with a genius
So every role was intended for anyone to follow
Attention, I got a testament
Just like the book of Mark
I'm sparking a revolution
My story a revelation
Amazing, I'd rather save it, debate it
Everything on my mind
While I was taking a mental picture
OK, so my train of thought is evasive
I'm faded within my memory
From a daily addiction of always staying sedated and claiming I wanna make it
I'm nothing more than a follower
The problem is that most people only look at popular rap and miss all of the actual good stuff.

Any poets here who rap?

My circumstances never enhances my shit just never stop
My only chances only crashes and I feel my future drop
Is it necessary? Being so wary, worn out with a world I can't carry
Facing everyday believing in something I know just isn't in me
I'm a wreck, I'm dead. I've failed my only mission
I got a pistol ready to seal my fate and put an end to this attrition
It's not subliminal, I'm a criminal, with crimes commit to self
I spend my life in an psychological prison within the deepest hell
So tell me, is it worth it? To know that I won't make it?
Living in denial since the only thing I do is fake it.
My inabilities had degraded me becoming society's liability
The only people who cared for me are gone due to my insecurities
I pushed away everything that held such great value to me
Because I believed in something that was far too big and great for me
My imagination subdued and manipulated my reality
The world around me felt so unreal it drove downwards to insanity
I can't believe it, I kept on lying to myself for so long
But since I've lost everything I might as well just carry on

Nothing major I do these on the go without editing or reviewing so mind the mistakes.
