St. Aquinas has never been refuted...but you're still an atheist?
I'm not an atheist, but there's no reason to think God is your best friend or even cares about you specifically. I believe in more of a Plotinus type All-Is-One God.
Even Aristotle realized this

How do you consume ebooks, /lit/? Laptop? Large computer screen? Ereader?
I've been using my laptop to read ebooks but now I'm considering an eink reader. Worth it? My second option is a tablet with LCD screen. Thoughts?
I got myself a Kobo a couple of years ago, for something like 50€.
It works perfectly.

With e-readers (hardware or software) you can read nearly everywhere. So based.

I mostly use a Kindle Paperwhite, but I also have an addiction to buying physical books even though most of my literary diet consists of books in the public domain.

Did any of you read these books? I Hope they Serve Beer in Hell? Or Real Ultimate Power? Alphabet of Manliness?
All these authors were getting mainstream fame and attention, then in like 2009/2010 they all just...disappeared.
Sam Harris is sort of bro lit imo.
Jordan B Peterson is kind of bro philosophy, though he really goes out in the weed imo.
>>9652452
He's a bad writer and got laughed off of some radio show when he got exposed. There's plenty of "bro" literature how there that Max aped. Henry Miller, Bukowski, etc.

Do you think someone should be considered an intellectual even if they don't know mathematics up to the level of basic abstract algebra and analysis, or physics up to the level of basic quantum mechanics and general relativity? Is just reading a lot of postmodern philosophy enough?
>>9652131
>implying someone couldn't learn these themselves if they devoted effort to it, especially if they are intelligent
Yes, to answer your question. All they need to do, if they want to learn such things, is pick up a book about them. You also don't need to be a genius or even up to speed on the algebra or various other maths in the field to make an assessment on it if you can understand the concepts of those maths. You just need to be, what's that? An intellectual?
>>9652159
I didn't imply that, but you won't really internalize all of the concepts unless you study them to the degree that you would need to pass a university course. Otherwise you don't actually understand them.
>>9652131
depends on what you consider to be an "intellectual"
according to my perception, yes, it is, if you have a decent understanding of it and can grasp the most important concepts (post-modern is a classification that's generally attributed to philosophers by other people, the great majority of the so called "post-modern" philosophers don't identify themselves as that)
but if you have a positivist, capitalist (basically the same hehe) or just generally pragmatic view i guess no, only those "TRUE SCIENTIFIC!1" people could be
but keep in mind that no one can know everything and that if you dedicate your life to something it's very hard to have an understanding of all the shit there is along with your specific field
so in that case no one could really be an intellectual. most of those STEMfaggots dont even know the basics about the philosophy behind their science and/or epistemology so
I've just read first book and I liked it. Is this good starting point with greeks?
>>9651394
No, it's a good book for Normie's who don't read at all but you should read history of ancient Greece, read mythology, Iliad odessey, presocratics, trial of Socrates. You could read other shit in between but that's a good start.
If you're not a heavy reader then it's a great book to read in and of itself.
Don't know if this is bait or not
Not OP. I have finished with the presocratics and sophists, have read the iliad and the odyssey and want to start with plato's dialogues. What is the general reading order if I want to read a few dialogues before starting with the Republic?
No, for fuck's sake, read Plato in order.
Are there any anons here who prefer writing in english instead of their native language? If so, what is your primary source of english vocabulary? How do you memorise idioms, contextual figures of speech etc?
I'm an amateur writer, and yeah, I prefer english, with my native language being portuguese
>How do you memorise idioms, contextual figures of speech etc?
The internet

native language chinese
i keep a pretty well detailed book of vocab (some quite laughable, some esoteric)
i have a vocab count of about 30k so it ain't too bad
My native language is German and I fucking hate it. I'd never write in it, I almost never read in it (excluding e.g. Nietzsche and Kafka which simply can't be translated, but that's once in a blue moon, I almost exclusively read Americans). I avoid German like the plague. I've been a total americaboo all my life and everything I do revolves around that. I feel as if English is my native language desu.
I just read a lot is all. I do keep a notebook for idioms and vocabulary, but I barely ever see anything new these days and I don't use it a lot. (And you can totally make idioms up as you go and no one will be the wiser, that's what's so great about English.) The most important thing is to read works by native speakers, and, well, it helps to read very consciously/actively, but you really just need to read (and write) a lot and your vocabulary will grow naturally. There's no big secret to getting better at a language. Just use it.
why is the bible a pretty good work of art. but somehow Christianity turned out so fucking horrible?
seems like somewhere along the way maybe the devil himself took over it or human beings are just awful.
high lol pop culture pastors make millionaires of dollars basically paraphrasing self-help books but adding God/Jesus at the end. Not to mention every church I've attended seems to put a huge emphasis on donating money(aka tithing) so you can expect to receive some kind of "blessing".
What went so horribly wrong? did ego itself destroy it? or was the Bible not good enough to stand the test of time?
Blame Protestants.
Why did you choose to visit McChurches?
>>9651236
>or human beings are just awful
The Bible itself asserts this constantly.
The NT makes no claims that Christianity will fix all the world's problems, or be free of problems itself. Several of Jesus' parables foresee a church that is at best a mixed bag of true believers and phonies.
Even so, there will always be people trying to do good in Jesus' name.
Why don't publishers release books with slipcases instead of dust jackets?
>actually protects the book from dust since it covers every side but the spine
>far more durable than a dust jacket, which easily tears
>sells the book just as well as a dust jacket does, perhaps even better since things can be printed on the top and bottom sides
>gives the aura of prestige and collectability, thus increasing the price publishers can charge
>costs about the same to produce as a dust jacket, or only pennies more (it's just a box for lucifer's sake)
>>9651167
You really need to think about the costs associated with an action when asking why a business does anything. Is /lit/ this naive? /lit/ posts about how dumb women and black people are yet this is unironically posted.

What's the best edition of Lovecraft's complete works?
There's this garish thing in the pic (from "Race Point Publishing"), a cheaper and suspect-looking one from "Book Sales Inc"...Library of America also has a volume out, but for some reason those fucking retards didn't include all the stories.
Perhaps there's some out of print edition I could get used that's better than all of these options?
Oh and there's also this fugly leatherbound edition from Barnes & Noble. Quite expensive.

I have this, it's great. No omissions and correct ordering, neat font and high quality paper. I'd recommend it, it's pretty cheap

Guys what is a positive equivalent synonimous to "wasteland" ? Like, "wonderland" ? idk
I'm trying to find a more appropriate way to describe this sorta 'void of exceptional experience' to get lost in..

Paradise.
The Wasteland in Arthurian lit (and by derivation in Eliot's poem) is a state of removal from Paradise and of waiting for the restoration, the second coming.
>>9650732
Hmm Elysian Fields, I really like the ring of it, but wikipedia more describes it like a passage trough rather than the place itself..
>>9650747
.. so the way you (or the poem) describe it says that "a state of removal" i.e. Nothing nearly like it?
Let's say I want to adopt the mentality and manners of a prince archetype/emotionally and socially mature, popular, successful, high iq etc. chad.
How does an (intelligent) chad think? What are the main characteristics? How does he behave toward the commoner who is unaware of his formal title/status (like in Coming to America)? Can you give me some good examples? Pls help
