Hey, I'm looking for a quote I saw a while ago, don't remember who it's from, the gist of it is ''when you're living your life, it might seem like a chaotic mess, but when you look back on it, it reads like a carefully written story.''
Do you guys know what I'm talking about?

What are some good philosophical books on the value of depression and anxiety as an insight into the truth of the world? Something like what Cioran talks about

Sup niggas. I haven't dived too deeply into higher thought (fiction, philosophy, art) before and I'd like to change that. Been readin some Aristotle, The Catcher In The Rye, Infinite Jest, some Rand, some Nietzche and a little of Stirner. If you have any suggestions on what I should add to my readings, lemme know.

Is it possible to post a chapter of my story on this board and get some feedback on it. If not, point me to another board.

My pseud friend told me that reading poetry when you aren't drunk is for "queers." Is he right? Are there things that should not be read while sober?
Poetry is for rich people, who are gin-soaked lushes, so yes.

Redpill me on some books i'm thinking about selling /lit/. I don't trust Goodreads and I sure as shit don't trust my friends who still read YA and try to convince me to read their flavor of the month trash.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant - Haven't read it in the year and a half i've had it yet but it's been hyped to hell and back for me, and I think at this point I might be expecting too much of it.
Prince of Thorns - I just want to know if the series gets better because I live for that post-apocalyptic setting, but everything else except the Nuban was so edgy and shit.
Promise of Blood - I can't for the life of me remember what the fuck happened, and I read half the book twice. I just remember this sinking feeling that the few characters I liked were going to be shit on by the narrative, and Industrial magic is a combination of two things I like the least in a fantasy setting. But then again, the characters I liked were what kept me going.
Also I guess this can just be a general thread about these books.
The only one I've ever heard about is Prince of Thorns and supposedly it's Game of Thrones for YA like such a downgrade is even physically possible. But then again OP, all of your book titles sound exactly as edgy as they probably are and you should pick up some Eddison or Peake or even Meme Wolfe instead. Sell them and move on, it's like you're going to reread or take notes or analyze them even if you do finish them

I wanted to give them a chance if anyone knew they were worth it, but I think I'll just keep Baru since apparently it's not edgy shit like the other two. Thanks anon.
>Game of Thrones for YA
Oh fuck that
How often do you study and for what duration?

I haven't taken a class in nearly ten years.
I miss having that structure.
Does writing in the 1st person present rule out having good side characters?
1PPT is what my demographic wants, that much is very clear, but it seems so myopic as a point of view. Have there been any cases where a 1PPT book has well-developed characters other than the protagonist? How is it done?
As long as they interact with the protagonist quite a bit I don't see why you couldn't develop them well.
>>9614030
I suppose that makes sense.
But it almost rules out a setting with multiple plotlines - 1P past tense (just realised that 1PPT is a shit acronym because past and present both start with a P) at least allows the narrator explain what the other characters had been getting up to, etc, but present only allows historic explanations, not retrospect on the ongoing story.
I think this is something worth hashing out, because form influences content, which could be useful if you want formal constraints to guide you in your storytelling.
Anyone else read essentially western shoujo books as a kid even as a guy? I know lackey is one of the most prolific ever but DAW's sword and sorcery books were kickass. There were a few stories that had gay romance but I just skipped through those ones to get more of the political intrigue, magic, and war.
Concept IS execution.

What's better when studying a fictional work, reading up on literary analysis and adapting the most popularly accepted interpretation as the correct one... Or developing your own analysis and interpretation over multiple readings, obsessively honing it down to a sharp and formidable theory that you will defend no matter how many people call you arrogant for believing you are right or that it's a hair-brained idea.
When you are thinking or writing, especially if you are thinking about complex or broad concepts do you find yourself translating your thoughts into your native language from some mental impulse or do you think in words? I want to know how you think.
I think like a narrator usually just talking to myself
when i think the actor fades away until only thoughts remain
