Let's put it this way, you can write clever and wise characters, it just takes careful thought and confidence. But to write intelligent characters, especially within a certain field, the amount of studying you'd need to do to get the information right would basically leave you knowledgeable in the field.
Find an authentic voice first. And be sure if you wish to write an intelligent character that you're ready for a daunting task.

Y'all have been my friends/critics/peers for years and I love you, but I finally know it in my balls that I am going to have to leave if I'm ever going to make it as a writer, which I intend to do. I just spend too much time here. I hope you learn to get out of your own way and realize that to be a writer is to write everyday and that is enough. there is no such thing as a good first draft nor anything that editing cannot fix.
