What is he trying to portrait here?
Favourite Nick Hornby novel?
Also, anyone here know similar authors? (In terms of subject matter, writing style etc)?
I've been seeing this everywhere /lit/. Is it any good?
>>9668316
great thanks
Where have you seen this everywhere?
Anyway, struggling reading it, even although I would say about myself I'm quite versed into academic Marxist language. It's not an easy read and Wark takes his own theories in account while discussing others so you don't even get the full picture.
Would advice The Left Hemisphere if you're looking for something the title suggests.

I couldn't give you specifics, I've only ever seen it in my peripherals. Honestly, maybe Facebook meme pages?

JM Coetzee - Disgrace. I have never read such a loathsome book in my life. Filled with rabid niggers, sjw lesbians, white men grovelling for forgiveness from dindus.

Anyone knows any good literary podcast in Spanish?
Why is this guy so popular? I've never found his podcast to be particularly enlightening. In one of his podcasts about the first chapter, he claims Joyce used the word "coarsely" because it contains "arse", without any real justification

I just loved his accent and the palpable passion he showed when he talked about Ulysses honestly
RIP Frank

is dune the best scifi novel? would you fuck it?
i'd fuck it
I don't think Dune is the best sci-fi novel, and as a general rule I avoid fucking books.

Yes and yes
What are some books taking place primarily in a mental asylum (other than Cuckoo's Nest, as I've already read that one)?
Girl, Interrupted I think.
fallada - the drinker
i've watched "prendimi l'anima", a movie based on the story of jung and sabina spielrain. apparently, it's based on a book by Aldo Carotenuto, maybe that would be something interesting?
here's the movie: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TwnY5Z8rxpA
also, pic related, but i have no idea if the books is worth reading.
Writers, did you formerly write by hand and switch to laptops more recently? What effect did it have on your work's quality?
>>9667909
I started writing only on my laptop but eventually switched to notebooks and pens for first drafts. Transcribing it all once it's done is a pain in the ass but I get a lot more written now.
>>9667909
Believe it or not I write drafts on Computer or Cellphone and then I put the definitive ones or the most advanced parts on paper. Maybe it's because the effort of writting manually makes me doing my best. Additionally, I really enjoy writting in cursive, the same safisfaction that I used to had while drawing when I was a child. I can't assure how much it affects work's quality but take in consideration that since it's easier to correct in Computer, it's easier as well to
neglect putting the best words.
I started writing on clay tablets, but now I've moved on to chalk. I've covered the walls in my house with writings. Soon I'll be famous.
Do you guys take notes when reading? How do you set it up?
That's some real gay shit.

Notes in the margins and then when I'm done with a chapter (or stopping point depending on the work's structure) I take notes on major themes and my thoughts. Not that faggy shit in the picture.

It's actually quite simple to understand if you know anything about MMO economy and the concepts of dynamic equilibrium and monetary and item/product inflation.
MMO economy, is based on the real world economy mixed with "classical fantasy" elements in it such as magic, dwarves, elves etc. The problem that these elements raise is that dwarves in particular are obsessed with mining and forging valuable metals. The problem this raises is that given the innate productivity of dwarves, the limited population of most fantasy realems, aand the larger quantites of valuable minerals those planets contain you run into the problem of runaway inflation- namely the dwarves are producing far more gold then the economies of those worlds can utilize; just look at the horde smaug had- if it had been unleashed on the local areas you would have had Wiemar levels of inflation with bags of gold being required to purchase the simpilest of necessities.
Hence- the Dragons. They were introduced into these settings as a means of draining the excessive amounts of gold, precious metals, and magical weapons, armors, and artifacts that are constantly being produced in those environs- while still having the art, craftsmanship and genius of the items in question being appreciated by a mind keen enough to appreciate the masterful levels of worksmanship that went into them.
Hence Dragons were invented, among other reasons, as an instrument of dynamic economic equilibrium in the fantasy setting- allowing the Dwarves, elfs and mages of these fantasy realms to continue producing the treasure and magical items without the world becoming flooded with them over time; ruining the economy and making the most valuable of items seem somewhat mundane due to excessive amounts of them being available.

No? You have no way of knowing how much gold dwarves are able to produce, or even if they produce it, how much they introduce to the economy instead of hoarding themselves. Not to mention the fact that most characters in generic fantasy do seem to buy stuff with bags of gold. From your fist-sized travel bags to the thousands of tons of the stuff strewn around a Diablo II battlefield.
I like what you're trying to do but you've fucked up majorly at the start.
>>9667722
>dragons
>dwarves
Literally the same thing. It's like you have never heard of Fafner.
>>9667722
No, dragons are the inherent suffering you must overcome to acquire valuables.
Anyone knows what meaning of the word "war" (literal as an armed conflict, or figurative as hostility) does pic related refer to?
Byron was a retarded gay faggot Angloid
>>9667634
That's not the point. I am writing an essay on the meanigs of the word "war" and got stuck when discussing the phrase "war to the knife", which, according to the Oxford English Dictionary has both literal and figurative meaning. I need quotes for both, and already have the figurative one, and now am looking for literal one, but I'm not sure whether this one is literal or figurative.
More context is required to make the kind of sense, or to discern the sense that's being used.
As a bald statement the reference is to 'life,' as a bitter struggle, and therefore the literal meaning is being used IN A FIGURATIVE WAY. Essentially what THE ENTIRE QUOTE means is therefore Never Surrender. Or that's my guess.
Is there any place on the internet where I can ask for help with some part from a book which I don't understand. I don't mean a one-off question, but asking as soon as I encounter a part. The chapter summaries on CliffNotes etc. are very short, underwhelming.
What is, according to /lit/, a free man?
Does freedom exist only in the mind?
Just finished this, what were your opinions on it? Are the two sequels worth while?
Was it better than Bright Lights, Big Cityit was__
