Every single word that comes out of Jordan Peterson's mouth is so full of weight and meaning that by comparison, when I read other writers, (especially modern "intellectuals") or listen to someone else try to explain a complex idea I realize that most of what they are saying is just dross, or fluff. I realized that most people when they are talking, don't actually have a deep or profound understanding about whatever it is that they're getting at, so they dress up their ideas with fancy language that ultimately has no meaning.
Listening to Peterson and letting his message soak in is like a hearty dinner, almost every other philosopher feels like biting into a twinkie.

>"I hate irony!"
>"Well, that's great and all, but the Wardine be cry part is some of the worst writing I've ever read, with the exception of your literary idol Stephen King, who you made students read at Emerson. It sounded like you've never heard a black person talk in your life."
>"Oh, well, uh, that was the point. It was ironically bad writing that was meant to ironically mimic how white people who have never heard black people talk before."

That is unironically how some really uneducated and poor black people talk.

Feels bad that people on /lit/ are so sheltered they accuse unsheltered people of being sheltered when they correctly describe certain aspects of unsheltered life.

Why do /lit/izens tell people to go back to video games, anime, manga, and TV?

Sure, the majority of these mediums are bad, but each has its peaks which could punch their weight with great literature. Anyway, not everyone can read hard literature all the time, we use these things to relax after work and shit. Just saiyan it seems like an immature and ill-thought-out insult.

One day, Korzybski was giving a lecture to a group of students, and he interrupted the lesson suddenly in order to retrieve a packet of biscuits, wrapped in white paper, from his briefcase. He muttered that he just had to eat something, and he asked the students on the seats in the front row if they would also like a biscuit. A few students took a biscuit. "Nice biscuit, don't you think," said Korzybski, while he took a second one. The students were chewing vigorously. Then he tore the white paper from the biscuits, in order to reveal the original packaging. On it was a big picture of a dog's head and the words "Dog Cookies." The students looked at the package, and were shocked. Two of them wanted to vomit, put their hands in front of their mouths, and ran out of the lecture hall to the toilet. "You see," Korzybski remarked, "I have just demonstrated that people don't just eat food, but also words, and that the taste of the former is often outdone by the taste of the latter."

>The men in my life who love Wallace also love legions of stylistically similar male writers I’m not interested in (Pynchon, DeLillo, Barth). I began checking out of literary conversations with them altogether. Now, when getting into book discussions with a certain kind of man, I often say “I can’t read” as soon as possible. This is a pretty transparent defense mechanism, but it works for me, sort of.

What's the best place to pirate audiobooks? I now work a factory job and I'm allowed to use earphones some of the time which makes for a great opportunity to gain some knowledge. I was hoping to start with The new Penguin history of the world so I tried looking for it on piratebay and all I got was the e-book :(

Where's the go to place to find audiobooks for free? I'm sorry but with my current financial situation I can't really justify to pay for services such as audible.

Help a poorfag to become somewhat literate?

Or just read the book and decide for yourself what it's about, what the themes are, and what the author was trying to say.

Hi lit my tablet was obliterated by my 3 year old son, and now im pondering on buying an ereader. Does anyone have one? Do you guys read more? Or is it a waste of money?

I'm a paper-only luddite. E-readers just never felt right to me.
>>
they're awesome, but why would you give a tablet to your toddler?
>>
I really dislike them. It feels like when I used to have like 8 gigs of music on a iPod and because I had so many choices I rarely listened to an album and would often not even finish a song. Probably just my personality but ereaders gave me the same feeling. I think if I still lived in the city I would opt for one though.

Is it worth learning mandarin to read untranslated Chinese literature?
Lao Tzu got me intrigued.
45 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
Even if you learn Mandarin you won't really be able to read him, though what you will be able to read will be much closer to the original. Like I said before in another thread, China has much more than just Lao Tzu, Confucius as a whole has been much more applicable in Chinese history and government than the whole laissez faire thing Lao Tzu has. 20th Century Chinese literature, having taken up much of the modernist tradition, you will be able to read, with lots of authors and poets about 3 people on lit have heard of like Qian Zhongshu and Yang Mu, along with the more famous Lu Xun
>>
You won't be reading untranslated Chinese literature if you learn Chinese, you'll be struggling for years to achieve basic understanding of modern Mandarin. Learning Classical Chinese is an entirely different ballgame and the majority of Chinese today aren't even able to understand it both because of the Traditional Characters employed and because Classical Chinese is just a bunch of memes and in-jokes and poetry that makes absolutely no sense because it has no meaning unless you know before hand what it's supposed to mean.

By all means, devote your entire life to achieving less fluency than a Chinese teenager and being able to make a shoddy translation of a single text as the high point of your life if you so desire, but you can't just "pick up" Chinese.

How do I start teaching myself? Any autodidacts out there?

I want to start learning about literature, science, mathematics, philosophy etc. I have no natural gifts except for gritty determination and a genuine desire for knowledge. Is that enough?

How do I proceed? As this is /lit/, how do I read more. I love reading, but I want to make sure that what I read benefits me. How do I truly understand a text such as Goethe's poetry and not forget 90% of it in a month?

pick one area to start with, english literature for example. now research what books top universities have their students read in their intro to english lit classes. Make a list of these books.

buy a kindle and pirate these books because you won't be able to afford them.

now lock yourself in a library with your kindle and a note pad. take notes on every concepts and on things you don't understand yet while going through the books.

now do this for a long time.
>>
>>9706101
You just have to spend a lot of time with the material. I taught myself calculus by reading a "for idiots" type book then slogging through Stewart problem by problem. With something like Goethe you could read commentary/secondary stuff in addition to his works.
>>

>I have no natural gifts except for gritty determination and a genuine desire for knowledge. Is that enough?
For me it is.
But there is no use for what've learned.

If something bores you don't bother, read what you genuinely want to know.
