I thought this book would be fun. I read 45 pages in and I hate it. I don't know what I expected.

How old are you? Sincere question. A lot of younger readers probably aren't gonna like it, if only because they won't get many of the references.
>>
How intelligent are you? Sincere question. A lot of intelligent people aren't going to like it, if only because they realize how idiotic reading a book where the only thing the fans can say about it is "it has lots of clever references!"
>>
Lol no way it's one of the funniest most insightful books ever right up there with my favorites hitchhikers guide to the galaxy Kurt s vonnegut and Neil pratchett and terry rr Martin!!

Huh, I never knew Alice Coltrane wrote a book, is it any good?

I need to stop coming here. I legitimately get angry and feel my face scrunch in disgust and fear for my child's future. Every day I hope that the arts just get ignored by women and niggers but and hope my son will be fortunate enough to go to a private school.

This is unironically the end of the author and the death of the book.

I present you the GOAT.

>The text of the book is written in a bizarre Latinate Italian. Without explanation, the text is full of words based on Latin and Greek roots. The book, however, also includes words from the Italian language and illustrations which include Arabic and Hebrew words. Moreover, Colonna would invent new forms of language when those available to him were inaccurate. The book also contains some uses of Egyptian hieroglyphs, but they are not authentic. Most of them have been drawn from a medieval text of dubious origin called Hieroglyphica.

>The Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, set in 1467, consists of a series of precious and elaborate scenes involving the title character, Poliphilo ("friend of many things" from the Greek words polloi meaning "many" and philos meaning "friend"). In these scenes, Poliphilo wanders a bucolic-classical dreamland in search of his love, Polia ("many things"). The author's style is elaborately descriptive and unsparing in its use of superlatives. The text makes frequent references to classical geography and mythology, mostly by way of comparison.

Why do you people not like genre fiction? It's like rejecting a genre of music, by my way of it.
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
All fiction has a genre, therefore it's an invalid concept. /lit/ just hates on certain genres and not others. There's also the fact that "genre fiction" suggests commercial motivations for writing, or pure entertainment without regard for art. I think that's a better distinction, artistic literature versus entertainment literature.
>>
It's probably better if you hear it from a class on genre fiction writing, with several business-related advice, directly:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXSjRqTZeCs&t=10m10s
a window on the high opinion these people have of their audiences.
>>
Genre fiction to literary fiction is what popular music is to classical/art music. So we are talking about categories above genres, and your comparison isn't a good one.
I personally don't like to completely reject whole genres or categories of art, but in practice I definitely do prefer literary fic or art music. They just offer more to the audience and generally have higher standards. They want to explore the human being, its thinking and emotions and the society. Popular music and genre fic on the other hand are largely made for money and to entertain you, which makes them just inconsequential. There are certainly well-made and intelligent genre/popular works that I enjoy as well, but they are rare when you compare them to the "higher" categories.
