>So said fleet-footed Achilles, leader of the Myrmidons, daughter of Thetis and son of Peleus, loved by the Gods, foremost Zeus, bringer of the stormcould, son of crooked-minded Cronos
Is this really necessary?
r u dum?
>>9713935
You are forgetting it's meant to be read to an audience for at least 3 days. Sometimes people need to be reminded, especially uneducated commoners thousands of years ago. Imagine it as dramatic effect for the audience, or like how they introduce a person before they give a speach.
None of this was supposed to be written

>daughter of Thetis and son of Peleus
what did he mean by this
Why were the Greeks such colossal cunts?
I just read Hector's first scene with his family and, holy shit, it made me feel so bad knowing he's going down.
The Greeks, however, are all enormous dicks that only care about glory and killing. They are despicable. Not a single one is remotely likable. Even Paris is a better man than most of them.
Why did Homer portray them under such a bad light?
Childhood is when you idolize Hector. Adulthood is when you realize Achilles makes more sense.

A bit of context. I spend a lot of my time solo hiking. I love this activity, however, it can be a bit of an emotional roller coaster at times. To counter the darker moments I tend to read something lighthearted. The problem is I have hit a bit of a wall and need suggestions. I recently tried the Dark Materials books after they were repeatedly recommended to me but I didn't get on with them at all. Pratchett has been a good companion as well as Herbert, Gibson, Dick etc. Hopefully that gives you an idea of the sorts of books that have helped me stay upbeat on the trial, or at least distracted. Any suggestions for engaging, well writing, and if possible amusing books would be hugely appreciated.
WHY?! WHY MUST YOU TORMENT ME SO WITH THESE JEZEBELS? All I want to do is come here for an asexual experience that will exercise my brain but I am constantly titillated by these vixens with their prodigious hips and provocative figures. Can I never satiate this thirst, will I ever know the touch of a woman and enter between her loins? Will my seed ever drip from her moistened hole?
Life is a constant hell. No wonder I resent women too.

Yes anon, you are one. Not a published one, but a writer none the less. The difference between you and a published one is solely your behavior.

How do I go around reading and understanding pic related? Do I need a secondary book/commentary to help me? Or perhaps I need to start on another book before taking on Euclid's Elements?
>>9713784
No. Sometimes it might take hours to understand difficult proofs. Sometimes the solutions just comes to you when you are not working, or when you are at sleep.
You need unlined paper to write on and experiment with the theory on your own. Don't save your notes. The best mathematicians have poor memory.
I warn you: The book contains mistakes. Part of the experience is to find and correct them. Never trust anything to be true before you fully understand it and can easily prove it yourself.

If you are doing it right, you are going to consume enormous amounts of paper. I use normal copy-paper. (It is cheap and sometimes you can steal it form the printers at your university, or local library). It is also good to have a board on your wall to write down problems you are suppose to think about.
Is this book good?
Any self-help book is trash.
Is the introvert/extrovert dichotomy even real?
>>9713763
It is but people who dance around with a guitar and write books about how awesome life is are not introverts. They're just attentionseeking cunts who have discovered that slapping a diagnosis on yourself makes people notice you more.
Hey /lit/, /sci/ here.
Please explain why so many of the literary and humanities types think that the universe in any way cares about the human will, art or beliefs? And why do many philosophers seem to think that the universe resembles a human-like mind?
We love to project our qualities onto the universe, but this only shows the shortcomings of our own perceptions.

How can someone honestly say they're a loser who doesn't want to live? How arrogant are you to imply you weren't the fastest sperm and that your odds at existing at microcosmic at best...do. people not realize that this is it? This is all that's here. After they blow it they (realistically) have nothing to look forward to.
God exists and created every living being. You have an eternity with Him to look forward to.

Hey /lit/, I was wondering if there were any examples of Novels where the focus is on the setting rather than the plot?
please guys
i gots to know
Good ones ?
>>9713557
I don't really know. I've had this feeling that I've felt I needed to express and I think writing is the way to do it. The thing is I only have been able to create a setting in my mind that could reproduce the feeling.
