How do I start with the Greeks?
50 posts and 2 images submitted.

By actually starting with the romans because the greeks are totally inapplicable to today
>>
Just read the Iliad. Yes you will think it's a massive book, yes you will also don't understand anything the first 50 to 100 pages. Just struggle through, try reading it aloud and look at some internet resources every now and then.
>>

Start with Plato. You're going to get meme'd into thinking that you need to study a dozen irrelevant presocratics, and have a scholarly understanding of Greek mythology and history. But in reality, a book with footnotes, and google should clear all of that up. He's a pretty easy read for a beginner; though you might want to find some analyses of the text you're reading, so that you can absorb it to its fullest potential.

I have to write a thesis this year and I'm not so experienced. So, I need a hand.

The thesis I'd like to write should be about Philip Larkin because it's one of the best poets for me but I don't know what the topic should be about. It may be about Schopenhauer's ideas on death vs Larkin's poems(High Windows, Ambulances, Wants, This be the Verse) or the theme of mortality and pessimism in those poems.

What do you think? I'm open to other suggestions.

Or maybe a Marxist criticism on "Money" by Larkin?

What was the best British Catholic Writer from the late 1800s to the 1960s?

I read Chesterton's orthodoxy and I disliked the way he glossed over ideas and individuals he disagreed with it often came off as a strawman. He would state their position or sum up what he thought was their main idea say why he would think it was wrong and then use an example or allegory which basically came down to "Egad fellow! You're absolutely insane!". It seems to be a tactic often used by Journalists they can slip in little things like that through their command of language which gives them the power of creating vivid descriptions.

You know when people say that the Internet is "the ultimate library of human knowledge", that you can find any info that you need and that now is easier to be intelectual than it ever was in human history? I guess that I agree with this, but it seems to me that I don't know much places on Internet like that. Where do you find things you're interested in? Which living intelectuals' thoughts do you care about? Is there any website which has good literature reviews and analysis, political, social and economic discussions, art reviews and recommendations? Something written by the most profound minds of humankind... Pic unrelated, but comfy.

>Is there any website which has good literature reviews and analysis, political, social and economic discussions, art reviews and recommendations?

You don't understand. The internet is an ultimate library of human INFORMATION. If you're looking for WISDOM you have to look somewhere else.
>>
>>9738758
>art reviews
Sundays museums are incredibly cheap.
>Even I can affor them then
Go in your nearest art museum and look at art that pleases you and then please, if it is a good museum, read in one of its provided books what the meaning or at least circumstances were when the painting was created and what special technique or message was included.
Art is to be seen in the original.
Any "Art" you see on the Interenet or any screen is Augenblickskunst that is msot likely shallow and uninteresting really.
You can't appreaciate art online.
Don't fight it and don't try it.

Well prose rates a 74 on the importance scale, whilst plot only gets a score of 71, so yes, prose is more important than plot.

Stories are about human struggles. Good prose is needed for good characterization. Any story that is pure plot or pure ideas will be wholly superseded and forgotten.

Should I use Book Depository or Amazon? Free shipping and prices somehow better than Amazon seems too good to be true, whats the downside here?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>9737971

If you can avoid Amazon then do so. The less business you give them the better.
>>
>>9737971

There is no downside or trick to BookDepository shipping rates. It really is just the cost of the book itself and that's it. I use them all the time.
