Is there any point in physical books anymore?
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
You mean beside from the fact that they are impervious to a blackout?
>>
No, but I enjoy the tangibility of the physical.

I genuinely thinking about buying a blu-ray. Something I haven't contemplated doing since the DVD-era almost a decade ago.

the sheer idiocy of this statement causes me physical pain. Explain yourself.

McCarthy is one of my favorites, but I can't get into Suttree the way I couldn't get into The Orchard Keeper. It's not bad, it's just that the narrative is too jumpy for my taste. The story isn't getting anywhere too.

Please suggest what to read instead. Also feel free to discuss Suttree.

It's his best book.
>>
Suttree does have the most meandering plot of McCarthy's novels. The Road, No Country for Old Men are much more conventionally plotted (but the Sherrifs stories about the old days can meander a bit).

While you're reading it Child of God seems to meander but in hindsight it depicts Lester becoming progressively more alienated from society.

There are words, but they don't say anything. Go watch TV or do something else that matches your intellectual power.

>>9750846
Child of God was my favorite. It had the bleakness and grey veil of every McCarthy book without being so vapid as NCFOM was (I liked that too, but it was different from everything else. The critics said it was "the most accessible" of his books.

Is anyone else really bothered by the child orgy scene in this book? What's the reason for it? All I can imagine is S.K wanking off while he was writing it.

No. It's just words on a page and if you can somehow find it in yourself to move past the fact that children are fucking (as they sometimes do) you will see that it makes sense in the context of the story.

Who here /hermit/?

I don't mean some basement dwelling autist jacking off to anime and playing video games all day but someone who has chosen to opt out of this hellish culture for spiritual reasons.

Was there a particular event which triggered your retreat from society, or was it a conglomeration of things? How do you spend your days? How much time do you spend with other people and what type of relation are they to you? Also what do you to develop yourself spiritually?

>>
More like social and philosophical reasons, there is little spirituality involved
And reading books and papers is the only thing which keeps me alive
>>
>>9750740
I would put philosophy under the umbrella of spirituality myself. Do you listen to music? If I didn't have music I probably would have killed myself a long time ago.

The only difference is the greater honesty of the former

I've picked up learning french to feel like I'm actually learning something because I kept feeling I'm becoming dumber despite everyday reading.

How do I go about it? I downloaded a grammar book and I'm going trough Duolingo but it doesn't feel right and I miss a lot of concepts (mostly because most grammar book deal with verbs only when there is so much more I need to get through).

English is my second language and I have a limited knowledge of german so I know I have the ability to learn other languages but it's strange how slow it's going.

Should I start manually translating children's books? What do you guys do for fun when learning languages?

Try this,
Or short stories, easier to stay focused than with long texts. Even translations of stuff you've read in your native language or in English a long time ago.

Im looking for suggested texts or authors to study that will help me form a basis for writing. I'm talking in terms of being able to transfer my personal thoughts and beliefs onto paper, in a way that can convey an argument or viewpoint clearly to a reader. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Not OP but I figured this might be a good place to ask. How do I prevent my stories from becoming thinly veiled autobiographies?
>>
>>9750456
This is simple. Don't write thinly veiled autobiographies. It isn't something that happens by accident.
>>
>>9750452
Progymnasmata. Learn by steps and by imitation. You'll always have material to work with, and then you can make it your own as you practice.

What are some good novels that incorporate science into their stories? I'm looking for something that does it similarly to the Zero Escape series, the Infinity series and Steins;Gate. The only novel I can really think of that does this is Gravity's Rainbow.

Please don't bully me for liking VNs

We don't.

Literature is like a friend gifting you a tool to ensnarl your imagination and build your own understanding of a world. It is a free experience.

Video-gaming is like a friend inviting you at a party in his home. He is master of the experience. A guided one.

The boundaries aren't the same and both serves different purposes.

Medias are not competing with each other. They are complementary.

Now fuck off, litlet

literature drawbacks:
~~fo' real~~
>there's a fiery desire to read everything, but you must take one step at the time.
~~baity~~
>you get pretentious af
>knowledge = power

videogame drawbacks:
~~fo'real~~
>you become trapped in a skinner's box, spending countless hours doing the same shit (for fun, they say...)
>online games take too long to end (MOBAS, MMO's,)
>can get really expensive to start up
>can get really expensive to upkeep (if you play AAA frequently)
>games are longer than a book, usually. And they're very inefficient at delivering new experiences. Since it has to sacrifice gameplay for this.
>being addicted to video game must suck ass. (These chinese VG addiction centers are serious business, tho.)
~~baity~~
>not really popular with the ladies
>anime + vidya = ultimate degeneracy
