I teach 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts to black kids in the hood. Last year, we got a grant to have class sets of novels for the first time in our school. Most of the kids can read on grade level (according to some bs test we give), but they've never read an actual novel in school.

I got the following books;
>Hatchet
>Call of the Wild
>The Hunger Games
>The Hobbit
>To KIll A Mockingbird
>Flowers for Algernon
>Wonder

the fourth grade teacher got A Wrinkle in Time, which I consider way more challenging than some of those, so I'm not sure I buy into the books' reading/lexile levels.

any suggestions for how to break these up between 7th and 8th grade? Could 8th graders appreciate To Kill a Mockingbird/ The Hobbit?

I really recommend the hatchet for the kids, it's a really interesting book which I am sure all kids would enjoy. I knew some kids that never read books at all and they really enjoyed it. Plus I think it teaches some lessons about family and shit, but I'm not sure it was a long time ago when I read the book.

Well the first thing you should do is look through your entire curriculum and throw out any concept or assignment that requires your students to think about the future. This will save a tremendous amount of time, effort, and frustration on your part that can be more wisely spent on getting more grants from the gubmint and colluding with the teacher's union to ensure that youre unfireable.

So like what you mean by that? I can have everything people ever dreamed of having? Well I'd take that shit for me, yeah man. His video journalism is fine, but I have no idea what makes him an intellectual. If anything the nature of his films would make him want to avoid that kind of reputation.

>wake up on a Sunday morning
>told myself last night after binging on junk food and coffee to numb my ennui, that I'd stop that, eat healthily and live the good life
>sit in bed and read Snow Crash for 90 pages, mainly because people will call me stupid if I don't read (I know it's sci-fi but I finished Brothers Karamazov recently so I had some leeway)
>still feel existential angst gnawing at every inch of my skin
>"Should I have read more? Should I have read only as much as I felt like? Why even read, it's just a consumerwhore activity. I should be producing something. The fact that I aimlessly read is proof I will amount to nothing. The fact that I want everything to have an aim means I will amount to nothing, all works of genius came from genuine curiosity and enjoyment, not to a schedule."
>go to gym, knowing that I'm weak due to bad sleep caused by coffee
>do bench press and I'm so damn weak I leave the gym within ten minutes
>going to the gym with no goals bores the fuck out of me
>maybe that's proof I understand the nature of lifting weights, only heavy weights mean anything, lifting less is a waste of time
>maybe none of that makes a difference, maybe

When you're so unspooked yet not independent minded, everything is a judgement. I worry about my IQ and life prospects based on my success at doing up my dress shirt's wrist button. I can't just read for fun, it has to be done within the context of my entire worth. It was easier reading boring as fuck old books, at least that gave me everlasting pseud cred.

And I have to go outside and see Chads and Staceys living the life based on genetics... I was fucked all the time. It is UNBEARABLE being outside.

I have no willpower. I don't even believe in free will but I pretend to believe I have the illusion of it. I have no balls necessary to say no to the judgement of others. I'm going to watch Wimbledon right now like a consumerwhore cuck.

Anon, the fact that you feel everything needs to have a goal and be a good use of your time is also a symptom of consumerism. Also, why are you bitching so much if you don't believe in free will?

Lol I can't believe there are people who haven't read David Foster Wallace. It is almost as bad as not reading the Greeks. If you haven't read both you don't belong here and you don't deserve to read books. Your kind should stick to John Green; it is the only thing your insectoid brains can handle.

Can anyone explain to me what the fuck happened in this book?

So... spoilers ahead...
But...

My main issues are:
What the hell happened to Neuromancer/Wintermute? Was the split caused by the junking of the cores, or was it something that happened before that as a natural result of the diverging of infinite consciousness?
Who made the box maker? Why? What? I mean, what a fucking amazingly cool idea but... what?

Why did the AI pieces take up Voodoo God personas of all the things they could have possibly taken up? Was this just a decision that Gibson made because it reflects on the messy cyberpunk setting well, or is there something I missed? (I don't think it's just the AIs presenting to specific people in ways that the specific people would receive their messages well, Turner doesn't seem to have any fucking idea who Samedi is, same with Paco and Virek, Bobby as well)

And what role did the ice-cracker that Bobby used at the beginning of the book play? I realize it came into contact with Wig and the AI core at some point in the timeline, but was it really just a plot device to have Bobby meet Angie and the hoodoo crew?

My biggest question, though, is what the fuck was it all about? In Neuromancer, there was a goal and there was a ton of shit to be done along the way.
Here, it just seems like some crazy fucking shit happened, and basically it was no one party's goal or fault that anything happened, should happen, or would have happened. Virek wanted to be a digital god, Hosaka wanted some scientist, Maas wanted to keep their scientist and prospective riches, hoodoo crew didn't seem to really want anything other than follow the orders of their gods, Bobby was a hostage, Turner just wanted to keep his ass alive (and Angie's eventually), Marley just wanted to know what the fuck was going on (like myself). I think that about covers it. The closest thing to a story-driver in those motivations is Virek wanting to be a cybergod, but then that just begs the question: what the fuck were the AIs doing the whole book? I couldn't suss out any motivations. They fed info to Mitchell, protected Angie. Made cool art boxes. Why? To what end?

What the hell was this book about?
Also is the Finn fucking dead?
Will Mona Lisa Overdrive give me any of these answers?

Also why is Turner such a piece of shit? Who fucks their brother's wife?

>My biggest question, though, is what the fuck was it all about?

one of the problems with writing about AI is that it's impossible for a human to adequately describe a super-human intelligence. a few writers have tried, with varying degrees of success - some imagine it would be godlike, some imagine it would be cruel, and William Gibson is demonstrating that it might be like nothing we can imagine.

i'm reminded of that toy that when you turn it on, a hand comes out of the box and turns it off again.

It's not hard to understand, it was just bullshit.

NeuroMute an heroed becuz God.
Can't remember about the icebreaker. I think it might have used the genetech.
Yeah no it's a mess. I really don't like Count Zero.
Finn's not dead.
Turner's a mass murderer my friend.
>>
>>9763449
mona lisa overdrive will give some answers (but not a lot) and is generally a lot better imo. iirc neuromancer and winter mute were fundamentally opposed to each other (remember neuromancer didn't want to be reunited in the first place) so that sort of schizophrenia might've been part of the reason they broke apart. I don't remember why the AIs took voodoo personalities, probably because they thought it would be the best representation of them in cyberspace for whatever reason. icebreaker, don't remember anything about it, yeah count zero as a whole didn't seem to know what it was about so I agree with you there. I would say the Virek plot line was probably the closest it had to an overrall point. Mona Lisa Overdrive is p good though so I'd reccomend you check it out.

I get that way sometimes anon. Reading is a cerebral activity so I find that when my mind isn't at full capacity it doesn't do much for me. In fact a lot the time I scare myself more by reading. Last time I was in that state, I just when on a drinking binge so I passed out. I'm not an alcoholic or anything but sometimes you just need to knock yourself out to get sleep.

You're probably not actually insane, it's just a worsening side effect of sleep deprivation.

No, stop believing this lie, have a look at the Jerusalem Bible, they translated a French bible into English and told everybody it was a new translation from the original texts and everybody believed them including Biblical translation experts until recently.

did 'lesser' aliens even exist as a concept until alien?
im so sick of every alien race being humanoid and technologically more advanced than humans
where are the stories/movies/shows/games with savage animals aliens, or like what about some aliens that are gaseous, or non-carbon based? i feel like writers are just lazy uncreative fucks.
