What classifies something in Eastern Philosophy as true or false? In Western Philosophy, we have practical logic, truth values, empiricism, et cetera. But it seems like all the big Eastern Philosophers just made shit up and proclaimed it as truths. They don't ever try to rigorously prove whatever they're saying.

Which Eastern philosophies have you studied and who's writing have you read? Also have you done any secondary readings?
I can't help but think this has simple answers if you spent a minute or two actually studying it
>>
For every irrational eastern philosopher there is an irrational western philosopher. For every rational western philosopher there is a rational eastern philosopher. Try to know what you're talking about before running your mouth, kid.

Confucius. Lots of statements and claims, not very much proof.

Here's an example:

>forks require you to stab your food
>that's barbaric and (metaphorically) violent
>therefore one should use chopsticks
I'm not dissing the custom, but it's not rigorous philosophy.

>He reads for "leisure"
>He reads to impress others but lacks the self confidence to voice his opinions.
>He reads because he feels like he's a retard and looked down on by his peers(Probably true.)

you ARE a retard (Probably true.)

I've actually fucked girls who were impressed by my literacy. Granted it was only after I stopped caring about that sort of validation.
And I do read for "leisure", whatever that implies. Reading a book is a step above taking a nap in terms of leisurely-ness. It's comfy as fuck.
What species of bug crawled up your asshole?

Unapologetic brainlet here. Suggest me some books in the style of hunter s thompson.Like his hells angels book or fear and loathing. Plz fuck off with books that are just intellectual masturbation and dont try to tell me why i should make the effort to read em because i wont.

Der gotts. Though there's really no reason to get mad about it, most everyone who has ever read the Iliad through thousands of years knows that Paris was a bitch nigger and that's how his name will go down in history.
>>
The Gods basically controlled the story however they wanted. It was inevitable.
>>
The female gods all loved Paris for his beauty. Thats why they picked him to be the judge of the apple shit

Is it just me or his critics mostly cherry-pick or dismiss him as unorthodox and irrelevant without providing reasons or arguments at all? It sucks to be honest, I think that he has a lot of material that can be critizised and questioned.

I don't think you nor most of /lit/ want to hear this but I think psychoanalysis is pseudoscience so that puts him on shaky ground.
Of course, even if you use a solid scientific backing (which might be temporary) for your ideas you will still speculate and one could call that pseudoscientific, but I would prefer it.

In fact I find it limiting that we do not have many philosophers who speculate based on science. Someone like Peterson has a psychological background but for his philosophising he refers to the bible and Jung.

>In fact I find it limiting that we do not have many philosophers who speculate based on science.
Agreed. Why do you think that psychoanalisis is a pseudoscience?

Thoughts on this book?

I really liked it. Looks not only at humanity from a historical perspective, but studies the human condition philosophically as well, with interesting points about the importance of mythology in our shared existence and the stability of society.

Anyone else who has read this have an opinion? Is Homo Deus (his new book) worth reading?

>Is Homo Deus (his new book) worth reading?
I read this and Sapiens not yet. Homo Deus is speculative but I think we need these kinds of books to think about the future (which we cannot predict but at least think of scenarios)

What do you think of Sapiens? Can you tell me about the anthropology behind it? I have some interest in anthropology but it seems some of their ideas are a bit sketchy. Like the idea of societies without hierarchy (though I could agree it was much more flexible back then)

And I do not mean the idea that agriculture was a mistake I can follow that, though between hunter-gatherer and now I couldn't be luckier, yet the time between hunter-gatherer and now (as a first worlder) must be the worse

If this interests you I suggest checking out books on cultural evolution

Aye, I enjoyed that it didn't just assume we have it better now. It rightly points out the improvements in health and so on, but I find the argument that our happiness hasn't necessarily increased (and the question of whether it even can be) interesting.

I'd respond to more of your post but I'm not sure English is your first language. Could you rephrase a little?
>>
How does it stack up

Daily reminder that /lit/ is made better by constructive criticism instead of rudeness and bullying which serves no purpose.

We're all that's left of authentic literary discourse in the modern age. Don't take it for granted.

Lift someone up today Faggots.

Incorrect. I appreciated the sentiment and think it's important that instead of calling someone a retarded, you explain why they're retarded, and ask for their counter argument(s).

I just got Eventually One Dreams the Real Thing, and Progress is my favorite of hers right now. I plan on getting more by her soon.

Pic-related is Gregory Fraser (my prof is a colleague) and his work is great for a lesser poet. I'm comfortable recommending his book Strange Pieta to anyone.

here's one of the few poems by him you can find online

So I only have a month before I become a /grad/ cuck studying Kant and Nietzsche again. But tbhq I'm looking to getting get into some dense, meditative shit that is actually relevant to my personal thought. I'm in between studying the Five Classics, diving into Phenomenology of the Spirit, and exploring the pre-Socratics (mostly Zoroaster and Heraclitus in conjunction with early Judaic thought.

I figured I'd let you fags decide for me.

>>
>>9773496
Probably the Oxford collection. I'll do the necessary research for that but like i said Heraclitus is a point of interest for me.
>>
it doesn't sound like you have an actual focus on what you'd like to write your thesis on (which will need to be on one or two philosophers [or works even] at most). i'm a phd in philosophy and for both my MA and Phd i ended up doing something wildly different than what i had originally intended to do for various reasons. you need to find middleground between what you want to do and what your advisor's strengths are. plus you will be introduced to new thinkers and philosophical problems that will actually merit scholarly work and not just 'meditative shit.' keep in mind that you actually have to do scholarly work at the graduate level so whatever topic you work on needs to be philosophically important or relevant as well as have enough secondary resources so that you can take a nuanced position.

oh and let your coursework actually do some of the heavy lifting for you. make a chapter of your thesis one of your term papers.

tldr sounds like you're focused enough to have your toes in and what interests you but not focused enough to have a clear study path so just go to fucking class before deciding what you're going to study

muthucking boring

For most humans one TEDx video is already too much
Their brains would explode if they could watch lectures on the telly

>Invisibility
Was this brought on by schemers, manipulators, benefactors and engineers underestimating the, perhaps, vitality of their tools and cogs that moved their designs along? Was 'Invisible Man' invisible because people saw him, like the fake names on the commie ballot in the book, as assured and reliable because their point of view and the world it created refused to acknowledge anything that could not be defined by their view point? Sort of like a statistical outlier that they just chose to not see, but collapsed their plans in the end?

What did you take away from reading 'Invisible Man'? I just read it, and thought it was very good and very interesting. Not a lot of people on /lit/ seem to be aware of it, since it has not been memed yet.

Still, your comment is pretty sub-par.

I am simply amazed. Crime and Punishment has utterly changed my life. Before it, I had been a long-term pseudo-nihilist that felt nearly nothing outside reading. The sheer magnitude of the book, the sensations it gave me, I'm just astounded.

I couldn't even pick up and read a word of anything else for a week.

What was the most life changing book for you? I can't say this one was that for me, specifically, simply because it's not been long enough to see long-term results, but, damn.
