Does anyone know of any reputable secular translations of major religious texts? Specifically Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; though discussion and recommendation of secular translations of texts of other religions is welcome.

I guess this is a religious text general

there's the jefferson bible. TJ cut out all the fugazi parts of the bible and kept the parts he felt were beneficial to ones life. The concept is awesome., but the execution is terrible. its just random lines from the bible in a random order. its not fun to read. Didn't finish it.
>>

Thanks for the recommendation, but it doesn't sound like the kind of thing I'm looking for.

With the bible (for example) I'm trying to find a translation that is "literal", that conveys the semantics of the text, without being "biased" by any exegesis.

A translation which is based on the oldest available sources, since some versions of the bible contain phrases that aren't seen in other versions. For example Revelation 1:11
For example

Revelation 1:10

King James Bible
I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,

International Standard Version
I came to be in the Spirit on the Day of the Lord, when I heard a loud voice behind me like a trumpet,

--
Revelation 1:11

King James Bible
Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

International Standard Version
saying, "Write on a scroll what you see, and send it to the seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea."
--

It'd be better if it's translated directly from those earliest sources (rather than being a translation of another translation), which accounts for all the available fragments or differences and discuss them in a manner that would be applied in any other translation (like Loebs compilation of the Iliad, which mentions differences between different fragments and manuscripts)

There are (what I perceive to be) problems when comparing different translations
For example, Matthew 19:17

King James Bible
And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

International Standard Version
Jesus asked him, "Why ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you want to get into that life, you must keep the commandments."

Comparing
1)Why callest thou me good?
2)Why ask me about what is good?

It seems that 1) is Jesus asking why they call him good, whereas 2) is Jesus asking why they ask him about what is good.
These two translations or versions seem to have different meanings. Perhaps it is just a misinterpretation on my part, but I don't want someones interpretation of what it means, I want the accurate translation of the passage from the original sources.

I can recommend some translations of the Qur'an, but it depends what you're specifically looking for. If you're trying to study religion to fully understand it, I'd strongly advise against looking at only one translation of each book. With the Qur'an specifically, a "literal" translation does not exist.

Holy shit, I just found out about Johanna Schopenhauer and now I'm laughing my ass off. Did little Arthur really just write all that angsty shit because he was jealous of his mother being a more successful writer than him in life?

Either way, I wanna read her shit now. Is it available anywhere in English?

>First German woman to write without a Pseudonym
>Introduced her son to Goethe
>Son hates you for having so many cool friends and writing successful books.
>Son writes books about how everything good is actually bad and people should just kill themselves.
>Somehow books about not reproducing get published more than books about reproducing.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit salty. Arthur's a fucking hack.
>>
She threw him down a flight of stairs, and how fitting. A miscarriage was sometimes just a flight of stairs away, and her only son, still but a child, that broken yolk of an ego, I wrap these arms around my friend Arthur, as he wander the parks late at night, crying under street light. Tears of grieful truth that is the love of your mother is just another ego, just another. Just imagine that pain. There is much to rejoice, remain steadfast for ours will reap and so a lot of sad shit isn't worth it. But sometimes it is, and when like Arthur, it is as if hell has not decended by a bowl has been lifted and showing everywhere in abundance and vulnerable and monstrous will to live. Condolences

I get called a pseud a lot because I use big words, but I genuinely feel like some words are better at expressing thoughts than others.

What's the point of having all these words if you're only expected to use a select few? Is this a normie complaint for feeling inadequate?

>>
>>9797994
You probably use them when they aren't necessary or in situations that don't call for advanced or obtuse language. That or you use them incorrectly in an attempt to sounds more read than you really are. Or perhaps it's because you don't understand structure do by inserting these words into your sentences you create awkward flow that is jarring to whoever you're interacting with.
>>
>>9798022
Ironic
>>
>>9798022
First may be most likely, but in casual conversation I have to restrict myself from using the words I want because I know others won't understand, this in turn sort of hinders the eloquence in my speech

but christ was a failed leader who got killed by his 30s, at least mohamed successful waged jihad against his enemies and ruled over a burgeoning empire, so wouldn't it be better to copy him? especially since he was rich and fucked mad chicks?

I thought the last third of the book dragged on a bit. Were you satisfied with the plot and how things progressed?
Who was your favorite character and why?
What did you think about Shunsuke's note and actions at the end?

I had honestly hoped that yuichi would have ran away with the the kid he had met at the aviary that was being abused by his " foster father" and I found it really fucking dickish the way he returned the money and him back to the guy, it made me really dislike yuichi despite him being my favorite character. I did enjoy how he became an intimate friend with Mrs.Kaburagi. I thought the actions at the end were beautiful and justified, especially since yuichi was emotionally touched by it
>>
>>9798194
Nice. I generally agree with what you said. Of course, Yuichi is an interesting example of how someone who is handsome in a domineering way (I think he's described as having characteristics like a wolf--not in like a furry way, but as a metaphor for how stern he looks, Mishima says it a lot better than I just did), without really having those traits by default. People are able to lead him around and occasionally coax that side out of him. His "masculine power" is given to him by everyone else, and Mishima seems to say in FC that this is at the heart of what beauty is, a kind of photosynthesis.

I should probably re-read it. It easily belongs in his top tier of starter books, along with Temple of the Golden Pavilion and Spring Snow.

If OP is interested in actual psychology and not a bunch of crap you're doing it wrong

OP tell me what your interested in (personality, creativity, intelligence, cognitive biases etc.) and I could give you some books

I don't like saying "The Brothers Karamazov" out loud because Karamazov is not a phonetically pleasing word in English, I almost wish Dostoyevsky gave them a different last name or named the book as another Russian "This and That" title

His prose is slipshod, his characters are cartoons, his plots always disappoint and at times go into some really stupid shit, his novels are bloated with useless scenes, and he repeats story devices a lot over the course of his work. He admits he writes "the literary equivalent of McDonalds," but he also acts shitty when the academia doesn't take him seriously. He's probably one of the better pop writers out there, but nevertheless in a couple generations he be more remembered for the movie adaptations of his work, which are nearly always improvements from the source material.

Not OP, but what about Clive Barker? They often seem to be paired together. Barker directed the original Hellraiser film and I loved it. I would really like to get into his material.

Never read him, but I'm fond of his movie Nightbreed.

Recommend to me the pieces of literature that will turn what I know about the world upside down and grant me new knowledge and wisdom. I'm looking for some intense shit.

Seriously, Leviathan has been one of the most resourceful and greatest reads of my life. I had to read it for a PSCI class in college, and I remember it was extremely tough to get through even though I enjoyed it. But everyone from Milton to Hannah Arendt in literature, philosophy, and political theory bring up Hobbes. I would say he's one of the most necessary philosophers in the vein you're looking at, Leviathan is at least important as The Prince, if not more so.

Do you have any philosophy that you consider to be "beautiful"?

I've always found "A Free Man's Worship" by Bertrand Russell to be extremely beautiful in both style and meaning.

I've read An Encounter, Two Gallants, the Boarding Room, Araby, and The Dead. I'll admit that while I enjoyed them all greatly, a lot of Joyce's hidden meanings eluded me until I read up on them.

Which is your favourite, and should I be reading them in order?

A Little Cloud, easily. I never got why The Dead is considered such a masterpiece when compared to the others, they're all about equally good i'd say.

>and should I be reading them in order
i don't think it matters, but why wouldn't you?
>>
i heard a lecture that said there wasn't really hidden meaning in most of those stories, i was like "wtf u mean we're supposed to take these boring stories at face value?" that's when i realize joyce writes shitty stuff just like all the other english novelists of the time
>>
>>9797422
The Dead was great for me because while it bored me mid-story, Gabriel's realisation that he was a only a pawn in his aunt's game, and the rapid epiphany leading up to the last paragraph really spoke to me. I didn't get the snow relevance until reading analyses on it, though.
