I'm gonna be staying in a cabin by the sea for the next week, with little to no outside contact (no phone signal, wifi etc). What should i read to pass the time inbetween long hikes?

Hello /lit/.
I'm not well read in classical literature, so I normally just lurk this board in silence.

I just found this fellow though, Jiddu Krishnamurti.

Could I prompt a discussion on his works?
I'd love to hear someone's thoughts.

I read Freedom from the known, thought it was full of evident thoughts put in a snide manner. Maybe I don't 'get' him,

haha you don't say
here's some advice: avoid anything in the sage/guru tradition of the dispensation of pithy and ostensibly profound "wisdom" -- read some philosophy where you actually have to make a case for your "insights"

post cool behind-the-scenes info about the composition of your favourite books

I'll start: Joyce was going blind for much of the writing of Finnegans Wake, so some of it was written via dictation to a young Samuel Beckett. Once, mid-dictation, someone knocked on the door and was allowed to enter. Later, as Beckett was reading back the day's work to Joyce, the phrase 'come in' appeared midsentence for no apparent reason - Beckett had accidentally written down Joyce's invitation. Joyce considered this for a moment, and then said, 'Let it stand.'

LOL SO RANDUMB

Joyce was such a fucking hack

Lol what? It's the same as a painter making a mistake and then leaving it in because it adds something more to the composition. Sometimes being spontaneous produces better art. It has nothing to do with being random.

i've read a good deal of the canon while studying the history of philosophy and it's been incredible. i'm happy to go back and do it all over, but, at least with philosophy, the marginal gains on this stuff is dropping like a rock.

science has never really interested me, should i check it out? i'm honestly more into reading about hermeticism or something, though from what i've read it's pretty shallow waters. history and politics are a non starter.

what should i assign myself next so that i'm too preoccupied to tackle any of the hard questions about what to do next with my life?

tfw you are reminded why you started self study in the first place

t. shut-in :(

OP I suggest you steer clear of hermeticism. It's just middle ages nonsense, not actual theory. Study electricity and radio. It's not going away anytime soon, and both of these subjects are mad useful in life.
>>
>>9801399
Esotericism in general just gets you thinking in circles, plus no one wants to discuss it except schizos and stoners.
>>
>>9801452
im not looking to give my life to it, just like hearing new metaphysical systems, though all of esotericism seems like some sort of spinoza shit

What are some good books about the English Civil War, particularly the trial and execution of Charles I?

bump I want to know too

Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay's "History of England" will serve you both well, it picks off in that exact time period, after a brief introduction on England from Roman times. The book finishes with the deaths of James II and William. In terms of prose quality, it is the best book I've ever read.

Do not buy the abridged version on amazon though, you'll want to procure a set off of eBay for example.

Non-fiction is pretty neutral honestly, especially recent work

What did I just read? It just seemed like the ramblings of a bunch of lunatics for the most part, andeven when Socrates started to talk, he just discussed semantics. Seemed like a huge waste of time to me. Was it?

I was also disappointed by it.
Seems to me like the Symposium is an outlier, as far as style goes, and the rest of Platos works shouldn't be written off based on it.

Ordering book from English author in English language from bookdepository, what could possibly go wrong?
I open the package and the exterior of the book reminds me of a notebook. I open the book, the font is four times smaller than the standard book font size. The Penguin edition of the book has 500 pages, and mine has 100.
I check the publisher - no publisher. Nothing written except the story. I open the bookdepository product page, it says the name of the publisher is "Createspace". I google it, it turns out to be some clickbait self-publishing service.
"I google self-publishing" - publishing of your own book. How can there be then a book by Jack London self-published?
I picked that product because it was the cheapest (actually 14 cents cheaper than the Penguin edition). I've bought books from bookdepository around 20 times and always the cheapest ones, and they were normal books - I mean, they're just books, not fucking weed.

Can you explain me what is this self-publising thing, and how can someone self-publish the work of someone else?

Always check the publisher OP. CreateSpace let's any jackass print up a book and binding and mail it to you.

I don't understand, how can he print a copyrighted book of someone else?

>>9800893
Are you truly baffled by the possibility of something being pirated?
I assume Jack London is long out of copyright and now in the public domain though

In Kanye's Gorgeous he states, "and what's a black beatle anyway? A fucking roach? I guess that's why they got me sitting her in fucking coach".

In this meme, Kanye is pondering on the nature of the Pterostichus melanarius (Latin for black beetle). In comes Ringo Starr with none other than Billy Preston. Widely considered the fifth beatle and, wait for it, the black beatle. And there you have it /lit/.

Been thinking about how Dickens was supposedly quite popular in serialized form. Do you think that a decent author in this day and age could replicate that sort of success?

Seems to me that "prestige TV" shows (which are almost like serialized films, at least in their production quality) overtaking silver screen films in popularity points to the possibility of serialization as a way to bring literature back into mass culture. Thoughts?

I think so and desu it exists.

Harry Potter is ubiquitous. Ta Nehisi-Coates. Bestseller wall. Water cooler lit is about presenting an identity or being knowledgeable on the current meme, not sharing thoughts. Just like /lit/.
