I read the first few pages and it was just as bad as I thought it'd be. Uninspired generic writing that any MFA grad could have written. I have no idea why anyone would want to read this, but I'm obviously not the target audience. I need to go purge myself with some good writing now.

Where do I start with Lovecraft?
I've Barnes and Nobles' "The "Complete" Fiction" and I've began by The Tomb, as it seems to be the first of his "mature" works, but if anyone else has a suggestion it'd be appreciated. I'm also aware this version is indeed missing some things, but I'm not sure what.

Does anyone here ever feel small-minded, unintelligent, and feeble when reading, or having read, a book?

I finished Portrait of the Artist last night and can't shake the feeling that my mind wasn't strong or good enough to have gotten much out of it.

The introspective passages were beautiful, but I typically had to re-read them several times to understand them.

I appreciated how well written it was but I don't feel like I have anything insightful to say about it. I did enjoy it despite it being difficult. Joyce's depiction of puberty was great, and Stephen's internal struggle between sin and lust was amazing.

I don't know. I can't make myself read people like Stephen King because I might as well watch TV instead. But at the same time, reading Joyce, Gass, Musil, et al is painfully humbling/depressing/etc.

How do you all handle these feelings?

Don't worry, kid. That shall pass too.You are still young. You will soon come to realize that everything you don't understand is just pretentious drivel told by an idiot.
>>
It's egodeath. It is gradual. Accept weaknesses and try to fix them. The way you talked about the novel in your post already shows you got more out of it than a lot of people.
>>
It's >>9805176 again.
As >>9805188 said your post already shows you put more thought in it than most people.
If you hang out long enough with other people that share the same interests like you like here on 4chan you will sooner or later realize that and grow arrogant and complacent like us. Better leave this place while you are still pure.
I was like you but now I just spend most of my time calling other people plebs.

The title of the book is in direct opposition to scripture, which states clearly that your thoughts don't determine your life.

James 4:13-15 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain. Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

The Oxford annotated nrsv has great notes on the texts.
Googling your questions is also a good practice, considering the Bible is the most critically studied work on the shelf.
Also on YouTube there's a series called The Bible Project thats essentially an animated crash course for every book in the Bible; it's surprisingly good. I'd watch each video after finishing the respective book

Why do people read poorly translated Dostoyevsky?

What is so bad about P&V
>>
>>9805008
What translations do you suggest?
>>
I started reading P&V, was frustrated with the strange sentence structures and somewhat wooden tone, then switched over to and read MacDuff.

On one hand, the latter is much easier to understand but on the other he makes the book even longer winded and I'd say removes a lot of the dry humor present in P&V and likely also Dostoyevsky's original. I think when I reread it I will pick the P&V version. I kind of understand the anti P&V circlejerk but honestly there's a lot of color there that's absent in MacDuff at the very least.

When I reread the book, I plan to read the P&V translation

Apology in Greek doesn't mean sorry, it means defend ones position.
