>A bullet had clipped a groove in his skull above the temple; from this the brain protruded in bosses, dropping off in flakes and strings. I had not previously known one could get on, even in this unsatisfactory fashion, with so little brain. One of my men whom I knew for a womanish fellow, asked if he should put his bayonet through him. Inexpressibly shocked by the cold-blooded proposal, I told him I thought not; it was unusual, and too many were looking.

I like Bierce a lot too I'm surprised he's not mentioned on here a lot more

Yeah, show Bierce some love.

Did Bierce's terse, unornamented style influence Jack London?

Does Patriotic Gore have a section on Bierce? I can't remember, but I think maybe it does.

Observing my path, day by day. You would shake the head that was given, and pity me? The beaten path breeds steady thought placed beside outside change. The simpleton is not consumed with the pursuit of food for the mind. One should never apologize, or forgive. If neither is accepted, or received, thought will smooth the other, like a gel, slowly finding the lowest point. Given it's own supply, rising above the objects. A slightly curved surface ungulates above. Faces appear in the field of long grass, and the layer of wet snow above. Shrews tunnel beneath the surface and die, the cold kills their youth before they have a chance.

itt; Things i want to write but know someone else has done it better, Your task, give examples of the themes presented here. Ruin my dreams.

The idea of people who burn themselves to give light to the things and actions they believe in. A tale about the secrets of the oppressed and the light that is shown on the world by their beliefs.

The tv boxed men and women coming out of there cave. Plato's cave notion that you aren't coming out of the cave, your going into one by choice and tribalism.

The right stuff. Man on island discovers cocktail of sea snails and old coconuts lets him talk to god. Not helpful but at least he has someone to talk to. Rubber duck method throughout early man.

Post yours, make the know it all's job harder.

There were many boards about DFW last week. Infinite Jest is not a great book in my opinion. It may be an unpopular opinion, but you have to look at the book for what it is.

Let's compare Wallace's Infinite Jest to Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five. From my view, Infinite Jest is like a fat man trying to sprint the 100m, while Slaughterhouse-Five is like a trained athlete breezing past.
>>
>>9798710
I don't understand if you are just talking about how they operate on diffrent levels or trying to say more with that analogy.
>>
>>9799340
Infinite Jest is bloated with prose, and obviously did not have a good editor. He wrote thousands of pages that inevitably did not make the final book, and thank god they didn't. I have to admit to siding with Harold Bloom and Dan Schneider on this one. Compared to Vonnegut's writing, which is lean and efficient, DFW appears to be adding bulk without substance.

Lingua Latina Familia Romana. It's perfect for speeding up reading comprehension and picking up bits of vocabulary and grammar along the way.

Be sure to also check the second book (Roma Aeterna) after you finish Familia Romana.

How do you find debates and speakers in your area, especially from prominent authors? I live in New England and it doesn't seem like we have many coming up this way, they all stick to New York/Washington/LA
