I want to write books, but I have other jobs in mind (I'll write the book in my free time), so I'm not planning on taking English or literature during college. That said, do I have to take those classes anyway if I want to become a good author?

not only do you have to be a literature major, but you must obtain a phd in it before the age of 25.
>>
Don't major in English in an American Uni, you will be majoring in critical theory with sjw activism. Major in something that will make you more rounded like Philosophy or Classics.

When does a book become literature?

pic related. I think we can all agree that a car owners manual is a book and yet could not be considered a work of literature.

what defines literature? Where do we raw the line?

seriously though, if somebody declares that the , for example, low quality self-help book is literature should we think of it as literature
>>
>>9870534
Yes. Whether or not it is good literature is up to the subjective taste of the individual.

Hey folks, do I need to learn music theory before reading Grout's History of Western Music or will I be able to pick up on it as it goes along?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Never heard about this book but from the looks of it i don't think you need it.

Although, i would recommend having some basic knowledge of western history, musical styles, the history of instruments and their development and music terminology.

It's not that difficult if you already listen to a wide palette of music. It would help with terminology and whatnot.

>source
I have a big interest in musical history, especially instruments, and have read a moderate amount regarding music history, though i know very little about theory, just the basics.

I'm sure this book will assume you don't know anything so it'll probably explain things proper enough.

perhaps watching Howard Goodall's Story of Music would help with getting the gist of it. very good series which i recommend greatly.

>>
While i'm at it i'll recommend howards other series as well. one about the 'big bangs' in music, and the other about how music works, which will help with getting a general understanding of theory.

I desperately need to learn music theory to a reasonable degree but I don't know the first thing about playing an instrument or reading musical notation

I'm dying here

How to tell if your writing is starting to look like schizophrenic babble? Is making your writing indecipherable autismal behavior? Has it ever been done well? What if you're developing your own language and all the translations ate available?

You think that I'd understand it if I read from the direct source? I guess it makes sense, but I wanted some book for beginners before tackling the stuff directly. I didn't expect it to be this hard (the "Logic" chapter at least, up until then it was good).

>>9870161
I've been thinking of skipping the chapter altogether and moving on to the other ones.

When even fourth grade starts looking good
Which you hated
And first grade's looking good too
Overrated
And you boys long for some little girl that you dated
Do you long for her or for the way you were?
That summer feeling is gonna haunt you the rest of your life

Neither. It seems as though only outside observers caricature me thusly, not knowing my own self parody is constant. What I aim for is rarely self consciousness. I gave up a long fucking time ago and have earned my life in experiment. In each moment I live to attain the psychology of a character that I will then consume in hatred. But then, I also play games when it is my fingers and not my mouth that opens doors.

The saying that a man is made at 20 would have a problem with my type of implosion. What myth stuck me? Well, you see, you can't look in the clouds, that's flying in a dream, and that's sexual. So cut it off there.

Except none have read my real poetry. None have yet found my books. Where do I keep them, where does one look?

Do you no what else contains lyrics?

Are there any books that help with understanding the reality of free will of man? Is our destiny written before we are even born, or do our choices really influence and make a difference in the long run? I had a friend of mine ,aged just 19, die and then it struck me. If people can shape their own lives according to their will, would anyone choose to die? Maybe it was a really unfortunate event, but i can't help but wonder if we really have controls over our lives?

No shit people have free will. In the moment of a decision, you have multiple paths to take based on your thought processes. Philosophically, you can say that all your actions leading up to your death were 'predetermined'. But you are ultimately the master of your own destiny. The present is malleable, our actions shape its form. Technically you can say once it happened it was inevitable, but you'd be a moron to believe your fate is entirely in the hands of your own actions.

I can imagine a hypothetical group of rapists and murderers pleaing: "It was my predestined fate to kill those people, I had no choice in the matter!" Lel

The most profound thing I ever witnessed was a dream I had where all the water on earth turned to jelly. Like it was the huge experience- scientists were baffled, the religious folk were panicking, everyone else was just trying to live their lives. It wasn't even bad- you could still drink it, and fish could still live in it, etc, it was just... jelly. It was strange and poignant and the dream ended with a person standing ankle deep in ocean jelly watching the sun rise.

Is there a book more poignant than this strange sci-fi metaphor of inevitable, inexorable changing of the times?

Also, at the same time the water turned to jelly, 13% of the human population turned into lizard people, so there were lizard people in labcoats working alongside humans trying to figure this shit out.

Step one: Be born
Step two: either have good parents who nurture you intellectually or not (If the former, you're ahead of everyone else)
Step three: shine through a subkect or an art by middle school, start making connections
Step four: high school comes, you're either already accpeted into Harvard or you'll just go to your state uni because it's close and affordable. Of course you can make it into that
Step five: either become an academic/superstar in your subject/field of interest or another average citizen
Step six: die

One of the most beautiful and massive French books. Chateaubriand's style is first-rate. No idea if it translates well, though.

Shh no facts,
only interpretations now!

Waht did Nietzsche mean by this?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.

There are no pure facts as far as we are concerned. To attempt to grasp a pure fact is necessarily to interpret it.

Just means that there's no such thing as an impersonal universal truth because we can't extract away the human viewpoint of a fact.

Does this book have pages full of colored artwork? Funny story, I actually received this book for my birthday when I was much younger, only to give the book away to the same people who gave it to me in the first place. I forgot from whom I got it originally. That was such an awkward moment.
