I think I have a pretty good grasp on the nature of Being. However I know almost nothing about the nature of the nature of Being.

What's a good starting point for this?

Is there a richer sci fi universe than 40k?

Asking for a friend
5 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Not really, since the 40k setting is a pastiche of everything you could possibly think to throw in it, having been created collaboratively by hobbyists as a side thing to the tabletop game and spared over-management from above

But that was back in the 90s. It's been over-managed into the ground for longer than it was great at this point. The writing was on the wall when they started whoring out shitty novels and letting talentless faggots like Matt Ward retrofit the entire universe and all its existing lore to service their own pet canon.

When people say 40k, they mean how it was when they were a kid. It's been shit for years.

Yeah but who pays attention to modern happenings atm? As far as I can tell having any canon progression was always going to end in tears.

The fact is that humanity is by default the player character unless you're an elf fag and the whole idea was that it was a point in time where multiple horrors each with the ability to eradicate humanity were converging.

Still its got to be said that the first few books of the Horus Heresy qualify as "good trash" and some of the Imperial Guard tabletop rpg fan fiction I've read was actually quite entertaining

I have a friend that loves to read these books. He describes them as shallow but makes up for it in quantity.

Childhood is when you idolize Arthur Conan Doyle.
Adulthood is when you realize Agatha Christie makes more sense.
4 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
They're both ridiculous hacks. if you want a good detective story you need to go to Hammett or Chandler. Christie writes things that are insulting to an audience's intelligence.

Like, reasonably good fun for a silly summer holiday read or something but in terms of being qualitatively good, no way.

Hey /lit/, I do not go on this board at all, I don't read books, nor am I even good at writing them. However, I was wondering what you all thought about pic related? I came up a with tv show idea that sounds kind of like '13 reasons why', some people suggested that they would love to watch this show and some suggested this would also be a sweet ass novel. I don't know if someone has already made a plot like pic related or something close. All I know is that I came up exactly with this, and wanted to know what you all think. Moreover, if you all like it can you give me some suggestions, ideas, etc? I think I know how I want to end it, but still not sure.
Let me know what you think.

It's too edgy for the teen audience and too unrelatable for the adult audience.
>>
>>9899774
Really? I thought it was just on par with 13 reasons why.
>>
>>9899780
Well, I mean its an interesting conundrum and I suppose it would be interesting to some people, but while I can't say it's not original, the themes behind it are terribly unoriginal.

-The 'misunderstood' loner kid
-The popular, but secretly malicious "chad"
-The bumbling, inept adults who don't know what's really going on
-'Some mysterious event occurs which makes everyone suspicious of each other, Gee Willikers, the everyday school life really got flipped upside down!

There would need to be some other aspect of the story which would be unique to you, or which comes as more of a surprise, otherwise all it would ever be is "that book that was kind of like 13 Reasons Why' or whatever.

Just reading the synopsis i would put it back on the shelf without a seconds thought

Self help philosophy ?
Uhm try any american interpretation of buddhism.
Its gonna suck tho and has no real value.
Carlos castanada the teachings of don juan gets close as a fun read and has positive spiritual values.

Separate question, but where does one even start a serious study of Buddhism and Eastern philosophy?

Borges on MIlton:

From the generations of roses
That are lost in the depths of time
I want one saved from oblivion,
One spotless rose, of all things
That ever were. Fate permits me
The gift of choosing for once
That silent flower, the last rose
That Milton held before him,
Unseen. O vermilion, or yellow
Or white rose of a ruined garden,
Your past still magically remains
Forever shines in these verses,
Gold, blood, ivory or shadow
As if in his hands, invisible rose.

Goddamnit /lit, why am i crying?

Thanks for posting that. Here's the oirignal:

Una Rosa y Milton

De las generaciones de las rosas
Que en el fondo del tiempo se han perdido
Quiero que una se salve del olvido,
Una sin marca o signo entre las cosas

Que fueron. El destino me depara
Este don de nombrar por vez primera
Esa flor silenciosa, la postrera
Rosa que Milton acercó a su cara,

Sin verla. Oh tú bermeja o amarilla
O blanca rosa de un jardín borrado,
Deja mágicamente tu pasado

Inmemorial y en este verso brilla,
Oro, sangre o marfil o tenebrosa
Como en sus manos, invisible rosa.

Is the final end stage final boss of the internet, trully the end game of the final redpill...

Is the final redpill to kill your own ego?

Is being free of your own ego the ultimate redpill of the rainbow colors?

Is this how you're free of the matrix?

The final redpill is basically Stirner
>>
>>9899567
yes it is, but there is nothing you can do about it. every action you take in order to "kill your ego" is only the ego in different form. no activity can dissolve the "me" from which the activity itself emerges.

What does /lit/ think of Civilization V's selection of great works of writing?

Also, many people on /lit/ tell people with pleb opinions to "go back to /v/," but what does /lit/ think of the possibility of video games inspiring children to read as opposed to the opposite?

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri was one of my first introductions to philosophy but the Civ series since 4 has been watered-down pleb shit

Looks like a pretty cool list
>>
It's a good list, at least what I read from it.
I'm pretty sure that kids don't play anything that would make them interested in reading though. Most of my nephews enjoy only Minecraft, DotA, and FOTM survival games. One of them was reading some new book about Illidan from Warcraft when I visited last. I got my son to play Pathologic (I see it here occasionally) and he seems to be reading my older stuff now from what I can tell. Maybe that influenced him, I don't know.

These lists are okay. I also imagine it's an easy list to mod.

I like the CIV series. It isn't perfect, but as a kid it got me interesting in knowing more about history. The Civilipedia entries, the in game glossary, was sometimes a bit limited. I remember the Civ 3 article on Fascism being particularly uninformative, but at least honest about the disputes around defining fascism

start with the greeks, obviously.
>>

Greeks -> Romans -> Christian theology / the Bible -> Italians (Dante / Boccacio) -> Chaucer -> Shakespeare.
After that you'll have a very solid background in /lit/ and you can confidently pursue what you're interested in with a great background in the stuff everyone great writer would know.
You can find the charts you'll need in the sticky.

Just start reading what you want, history, philosophy, literature, fantasy, whatever. If you want recommendations, there are almost always threads up for different things. Don't go by the top 100 lists until you feel ready.

has anyone heard of the essay that compared Maya Angelou, the black poet, to Maya Lin, the Vietnamese architect?

it criticized Angelou for exploiting her race and enjoying the benefits of celebrity

and it praised Maya Lin for being a true artist

I believe the essay was called "Maya and Maya" but there's absolutely no record of that online
