i dont know if the novel will make a comeback, it will probably level out here. the medium will adapt, i believe, into a format reminiscent of fanfiction site layout where stories can be binge read on a chapter by chapter basis, like netflix

Novels are just fine. There is a large following of literary novels that can sustain a large number of publishers. Not only that, but most people read at least a novel a year. The audience that went to tv, Netflix, and smartphones weren't the types to engage with a text anyways. They were the types that consumed adventure, action, and biblical historical fiction. Think of people that consume King, Dan Brown, Rowling, and Anne Rice exclusively. Once they have the option to get more entertainment faster with less effort they dive at it.

I don't like this idea. Episodic format implies that plot is the most valuable aspect. It encourages that "what happens next??" idea that so many TV shows and online series bank on. Viewer involvement and commitment allows the actual ideas of the thing to be weaker and less focused. At that point it's just entertainment which is the precise problem in my original post. Books are better because they're the opposite of that: you have to have your idea (either vaguely or fully) ready from the beginning for it be effective.

Everyone already hates Amy Schumer. Stop shitting up the board

ast week, the news came over the transom, hitting writers’ heads like a 3,000-pound sack of envy: Comedian Amy Schumer will be receiving $9 million for a volume of her memoirs. Even more disturbing was the fact that she’d already returned $1 million, an amount that 10 writers combined won’t earn in two lifetimes, to a different publisher, saying she didn’t have time to meet with her ghostwriter.

The scorn heaped on Schumer is a bit unwarranted, especially because her new publisher has hired me, America’s best-qualified comedy ghost-writing professional, to help complete her new volume. I believe Schumer has the potential to be hailed as one of the great memoir writers of her time, or any time, combining the insight of a Knausgaard, the wit of a Voltaire and the contemporary you-go-comedy girliness of a Poehler, Kaling or Fey. Even thinking about Schumer’s thoughts advances the cause of memoir.

What follows are short excerpts from Schumer’s memoir-in-progress. At the moment, it’s mere fragments, wisps of memory — madeleines, as it were. I haven’t yet had time to sit down with Schumer; she’s very busy appearing on late-night talk shows, awards shows and shows about other shows, doing the important work that needs to be done to expose Hollywood for all its sexist lying.

So what you’re seeing here for the first time has been gleaned from emails, voice mails and weird, hard-to-transcribe Snapchats and YouTube videos of Schumer, one of the most important Jewish voices to come along in weeks. Her work bears an odd resemblance to the memoirs of Virginia Woolf, yes, but it also contains seriously zingy punch lines that speak volumes about what it’s like to be a funny woman in a post-feminist sexual age. Amy Schumer and I welcome you to a new era of personal literature.

The original scroll has excellent rhythm, and the lack of punctuation isn't challenging at all if you're familiar with English. He actually uses it in some very interesting ways.

The Scroll is really the definitive version. Fewer "speed bumps" so to speak and not made bland for 1957 tastes.

Started reading Bernhard last year and still wondering how it take me so long to discover his work. Hard to decide for a favourite though, as I found pretty much all his novels great and each one seems to be different but nonetheless brilliant.

Study hellenistic cynicism, and disregard the judgment of others.

Have a "one for me, one for you" mentality, if it makes you feel so bad. "Pseud" literature -- that is, the Canon -- is good/necessary because it gives a society a common set of touch points to talk about. Completely ignoring that isn't good and leads to those touch points being shit like Harry Potter or Game of Thrones (specifically, the TV show, not the books).

While to an extent I believe that reading should be done out of one's own sense of enjoyment, it is important to set that enjoyment aside from time to time and at least attempt to "join the wider literary conversation."
