>Aristotle has been dead for 2300 years
>>9930693
There's this homeless guy that calls himself Aristotle near me. He's pretty smart, I dunno. I think he's a child molester.
Hey there, /lit/.
Hope you're having a fantastic day, I just bought this book and it's my first ever book.
I am not joking when I say that for my entire life I have never read a book before.
A random person online that I had a debate with opened the topic of literature and he convinced me to get into reading.
I wanted this to be my first as I like things that have to do with Angels and Demons stuff like that. I sort of judged the book by it's cover and bought the more expensive and prettier book translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow instead of the John Ciardi one. I don't know if I made a mistake buying this one instead of the John Ciardi books but that's what I'm hoping to find out with the help of you.
I've never really got into reading because I thought it was boring and not interesting, I always prefered watching Movies and Animation over reading the source material.
I don't know how hard it will be for me to stay focused and actually read the book and enjoy it but I guess I'll just have to see.
I'd love it if you shared your first experiences with books and reading. Thank you! :D

>I am not joking when I say that for my entire life I have never read a book before.
If this isn't a ruse you will not get very far in that book.
>>9937683
Not a ruse, I've never bothered to read a book. I know that I most likely will not understand it all but I hope it's a good introduction to literature.
>>9937709
A good introduction to literature would be Siddhartha or Catcher In The Rye or Full Metal Jacket. Not an incredibly dense, incredibly religious, translated epic of a man's personal journey through Hell during the Middle Ages.
What went wrong, /lit/?
>>9937668
You never had any talent and you're a boring person Tao, simple as that
No, not again threads about this guy
you people made me read it
>>9937668
>What went wrong
Nothing? He self-promoted like a motherfucker and made a career out of writing. Isn't that the dream?
Guys, I finished Manufacturing Consent and Guns Germs and Steel today. Have you read them? Why not? If you haven't read them you are a pleb
>>9930616
good goy.
>>9930618
/thread
>>9930616
I've read them. I'm actually not sure you have, considering the initially dismissive, ironic, and derogatory tone you're taking with them.
I found Guns Germs and Steel to be well informed and researched for the broad proportion, but disagree with the prevalence he gives to supposedly biasing facets such as the primary axis of individual continents.
As far as Manufacturing Consent, it's 80% Chomsky. Which to me means 90s intellectualism for the lowest common denominator, that we take for granted and obvious in our everyday lives.
You seem to want to make a point about the two works. What?
What do you guys think of H. G. Wells. Someone told me to read his works and that he is a genius. His he any good or is he a schmuck? If he is good, where should i start with him?
>>9930601
He's fun. Time Machine.
>>9930620
>Time Machine.
Can't believe you haven't read this, OP. Wells is one of those authors every boy should read growing up, like Jules Verne or Robert Louis Stevenson.
>>9930681
Hey anon, just because OP had a shitty childhood doesn't mean he can't re-parent himself now. Good taste btw
Did you know bad is good and good is bad and that's why you should be catholic losers

I don't drink or smoke because my dad became was an addict who beat my mom and ruined her life.
I have a three inch erection and I’m circumcised.
When I was younger, my dad used to shave me, cut my nails, trim my pubes, pop pimples on my face and back, would smell my penis to make sure it smelled nice, would do the same for my armpits, and would sometimes shower with me. This went on until I was around 16 and he would also beat me if I ever denied him.
Every weekend for the past four years, I’ve gone to the movies or taken a nap in my car and told my mom I was out with friends. I’ve also told her I’m dating a Korean girl who was in one of my university classes.
When I was younger, girls at school used to hug me and random and would also tell me they loved me. Eventually I found out they would dare each other to hug guys they found especially creepy/ugly and I was a prime target. One of them also started a rumor I was stalking her because we lived on adjacent streets, after which most of my friends stopped associating with me.
In high school girls used to befriend me so I would do their work. They were always upbeat and nice, would constantly ask me about my weekend, and tell me how smart and sophisticated I was. Eventually I started fucking up and they all moved onto the autistic kid who also got good grades.
When I was a teenager, I used to do weird/disgusting shit to make my friends laugh. More than once I dropped my pants and danced around because I had a small dick and it made them laugh to see me humiliate myself. I would do anything to make someone like me.
I like the band Echosmith.
The only time I use reddit is going on r/pillowtalkaudio to download audios where girls pretend to be your girlfriend and pretend to talk to you to help me fall asleep.
I really enjoyed the new Power Rangers movie because it was basically my ultimate masturbatory power fantasy come to life
Do you think you might be spending too much time exposing yourself to things you don't like?
Keked, pls moar about you

Explain something to me.
Why is getting a degree on literature or related fields, a bad idea if you want to make a living off writing and literature?
>but muh debt
Not an american BTW.
>but just read and writer a lot
which you will be doing in a literature degree, plus you'll never learn all the topics a lit degree offers, since you'll never know what you don't know.
It's like complaining about going to a gym to get a shaped body and screaming calistehnics are better (which they're not).
Also, enjoy not working on your city networking if you're on a basement alone.

> Why is getting a degree on literature or related fields, a bad idea if you want to make a living off writing and literature?
Only STEMfags think this. It's not a bad idea. Go study what you want, OP. I believe in you.
>>9930845
On the flipside, OP, I used to study English at an elite university yet I withdrew from the program to study CS because I was concerned about future employment prospects. I would only study literature now if I won the lottery.
>>9930553
Literally no one gives a fuck what your degree is in after you leave college, just don't expect to get a day job in English/Literature unless you want to go into academia. If you're a people person, you'll probably get a decent paying job in insurance or something and write at night and hope to make it big someday. It's what I'm doing because I didn't want to do academia.
So which one is harder to understand?
What is the better book and why is it_________?
Ulysses
>>9930539
Naked Lunch is a masterpiece. Ulysses is one of the few elite works of literature to approach perfection. It's on the level of Shakespeare's plays. Ulysses is harder to understand if you're not Irish, but they're both fairly approachable.
I thought /lit/ hated NL
Are Oxford's Very Short Introductions actually worth reading? My university has a lot of them in its bookstore and I was thinking about getting a few.
Pic related is one I really want to get.
I'll give you a synopsis of that book:
> No one knows shit about the druids.
It depends on the author, they are mostly good, but you can find them for free on libgen. I would only buy the ones that aren't there.
They are actually for the most part very good.
spikeman
hell yeah

What are some essential erotica? I would like to have a small collection to place on a coffee table for either myself or visitors to glance through.

Your honest opinion on Michael Chabon?
Anyone?
>>9930554
Give me yours, OP. He seems a relevant current author. Rec me some stuff as to why
>>9930186
I like some of his work, but in a way that some general reader talk about airport books as trash. I feel cosy in his worlds, but many because I don't feel like much has changed from the television screen I've stared at for years.
He's got more depth than most pulp mystery writers. But his works are essentially The New Pulp - the genre mixing genre of years past that was essentially just a new low for writers with literary aims. Nothing wrong with him as pulp, though. But I hate playful, sitcom style, Netflix binge watching books that not only are not projecting some self-satisfaction, but are also conscious of trying to undermine both the authors self-satisfaction and their self-consciousness.
Should I explore more of his work? I'm usually not satisfied with American writers in general, unless they're from a different era. Maybe it's just me.
I'm super new to /lit/. Just bought this badass because i want to make reading one of my new hobbies. Got any suggestions on books to buy ? have no clue on where to start. some classics ?

Acquire torrents and irc for one
/lit/ cannot attack his work
his manifesto is neat but founded on some gnarly assumptions
>you will be happy only if you're going through the POWER PROCESS to ensure your own survival
nobody does this in industrial society therefore nobody can be happy in industrial society
and its a tough pill to swallow because if you actually buy into it you should find yourself living in the woods pretty quick
