Do computers have consciousness?
eventually they will
>>9944493
No, computers don't have souls
>>9944493
>Do computers have consciousness?
No, but we don't either. Hard problem is a meme, what we call consciousness is just physically explicable behavior that revolves around treating useful non-physical fictions as though they were real.
What would be the /lit/ equivalent of BOC?
Repetitive, boring garbage for hipsters? Eh, we aren't really familiar with such stuff here.

This is the only book I have to read for the next two weeks. Please tell me your thoughts on it.
Mann is so fucking boring. Just read faust (again if you have already).
There are some good aspects though. His commentary on music for example

I liked the chapter about Beethoven, I stopped reading at the chapter about religion. Felt like reading a scientific essay rather than a novel. I don't think it's bad, but it's a really hard read. Maybe I'm up to it in a few years. (I read it in German btw)
What books should I read to become a pseudo intellectual? Do I need to read the whole book or can I just read a synopsis?
>>9944375
1984, Brave New World, Catcher in the Rye, Lolita, Game of Thrones, LOTR.
>>9944375
A legit pseud? The meme trilogy you fool!
>>9944375
Being a pseud is more than a choice in books, it's a lifestyle. Being an enormous pseud myself, I will point you in the right direction.
When you shop for books, always buy from Barnes and Noble booksellers, as they are the most reliable source of hip literature. Never buy books used, and especially don't buy mass market paperbacks. You're reading for the look. Next, you're going to want to buy books with provocative titles written by well-known authors. When you want to get into more advanced levels of pseudery, you'll want to get into pretending to read literature. Get yourself a copy of any book off of the /lit/ recommended "door stopper" books, open it up smack into the middle, and flip the page every now and then. Bonus points for staring into the page intently. Look up from your book every few minutes and pretend to contemplate what you've just read.
Congratulations, you've learned everything you need to be a genuine pseudo intellectual.

Why haven't you read the first comedy masterpiece of the 21st century /lit/izen?
>>9944282
next on my list
>>9944282
When he talks about literature and philosophy and shit he sounds like such a pseud. Is this book actually readable? How skilled a writer is he? Does his comedy translate well? Is it Norm being Norm, or Norm being pseud with misguided literary pretensions?
>>9944301
I agree with you that he sounds like a pseud sometimes, but what he does have is a good grasp on Russian literature. The quote about it being "Dostoyevsky by way of 30 rock" is a bit much but that sort of gives you an idea of the feel. He's a surprisingly skilled writer and the comedy transfers well with a dash of that Russian bleakness, but it never seems to overreach for literary ambitions.

>The Lottery
is it insensitive to assign The Lottery in classes with muslim students who are then put in the awkward position of having to write about why stoning people to death for tradition's sake is problematic?

I laughed.
Looking for book recs to help have a self-sufficient enough mind to keep myself entertained(or at least less negative and cynical.) I keep thinking of the lens hunter s thompson sees the world through and the humor he finds out of nowhere. (Inb4 drugs) I just look around and am disgusted by people.
>>9944084
try Comic Fatalism as in pic related, also read Epictetus
>>9944084
Write down what disgusts you over the top. There you go.

Or just think it, follow through with it no matter how small or stupid. Made me chuckle more than once involuntarily

I read fiction for my songwriting and non fiction to get educated...
...I am innately passionate about the natural world
>>9943902
You should read poetry for your songwriting. The natural world is the only thing that there is. Ever consume vast quantities of THC, lie down in the grass, and listen to the music? When they get a device that lets me play back my thoughts, I'll be world famous.
>>9943902
If you're going to continue your celebrity identity on an anonymous kite weaving board then you should definitely post your tits as compensation.
Whoever you are... I cannot recommend anything since I've already given up on nature
And you'll have to me more specific - I'm not sure what the purpose of the thread is

Thoughts on The Gambler - Dostoyevsky?
>>9943862
Helped me enjoy myself in Atlantic City alot more. Probably won't gamble again, I have strong-points more lucrative than luck.
Very fun story about women and gambling. Fyodor was talking to beta bitches like us. Kinda mad at how it ended.

How'd you read/interpret the ending?
>>9943913
Literally
>you will never have a sentient ocean create your perfect waifu

>subconsciously desire Emma Roberts who will beat me and mistreat me, possibly cuck me for chads or tyrones

For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Great Gatsby and Les Miserables are pretty overrated too desu
