dlp 1.1 by William Basinski
Hello /lit/, first time reading an epic poem. Are there anything I should keep in mind while reading this?

bump
Keep nothing in your mind, experience it as a human.
Throw away your modern day outlook.
The Iliad and Odyssey exalt the nobility of Honor.
The very first word of the Iliad is “RAGE.” The “RAGE” of Achilles when his honor is violated and his rightful prize and love is taken from him by his very own commander.
Right here we see Man versus State, as Achilles is the superior warrior, and as he takes all the risks, he ought get the reward. That is the Natural Law of Zeus, for after Achilles Natural Rights are violated and Achilles quits, Zeus sees to it that the Greeks begin to lose, as Zeus’s will was done.
Long before Atlas Shrugged in Rand’s cheap novel, Achilles quit the Greek army.
Homer shows that women who honor their commitments, like Penelope, lead to happy endings. Women who disregard their commitments, like Helen, lead to War.
Achilles quits for the sake of Honor, refuses to return when offered millions times more prizes, arguing that once honor is taken away, mere money/prizes cannot buy it back. He also reasons that all the wealth in the world is not worth him losing his life in an arena where his honor was taken away. When offered honors and awards, Achilles states, “I receive my honor from Zeus, not from corrupt Kings."
And too Achilles returns to fight for Honor, so as to avenge the death of his friend Patroculus, knowing full well he will die.
Simply put, Achilles is a man who lives and dies not for mere prizes, nor perks, nor tenure, nor titles, nor money, but for honor, and honor alone.

Whaa?
I was just looking for a place to post my writing but I can already tell the demographic is bad.
>>9059817
Because idiotic women in teens/twenties/onwards think they can live vicariously through their writing because nobody wants them
>>9059832
this, but without being a complete twat:
it's where kids without writing or life experience go to write.
>>9059854
>without being a complete twat
Parrots what I said and insults me while sharing my opinion. Project harder darling
How can you become a world-renowned scholar if you're from an irrelevant Eastern European country? Seriously, how did he manage to do it? I don't know other big names that aren't from countries like the USA or France.
The trick is to develop particular traits and ticks to make yourself seem endearing.
Par example, Richard Stallman once ate something from his foot and now he is recognised as the world's greatest computer scientist.

Zizek is just the most visible among Slovene philosophers who were into the same thing, at the same time, at the same place.
"Making it" is basically complete luck. And if you follow the stories of who makes it a bit more closely regardless of the industry, you will see it always follows the same pattern.
A group of people all into the same thing, at the same location, at the same time. You put in the work to position yourself to make it, but the actual opportunity and if you're going to be the guy (or among the guys) that makes it is 100% random.
>>9059827
So you mean Slovenia has rich philosophical traditions?

One of my friends shares from this page all the time. But she also shares lots of good memes so I don't want to delete her.
>>9059697

Yo /lit/, I have a book coming out next year, ask me questions about getting published.
Why did you do it?
>>9059704
Because I don't have the social skills to ever have a real job.
>>9059707
Is it a good substitute for a real job?
what's the difference between french writers and german writers
the language, mostly.
French writers are from France, and German writers are from Germany.
the garbage is eaten and your dog is pregnant
How come only the West has such an abdunance of literature and philosophy? It seems like the East, and all the other parts of the world, is extremely overrated, because you can easily check out their most important writers in a few years if you want, but you'll need multiple incarnations to check out the Western canon.
west is best
>>9059592
because the west is civilized while people in the middle east and Africa are too busy hitting each other with sticks.
Funny if you consider that civilization started in those placed but never excelled there.
In the end it's because the Europe as a continent is hard to conquer, you need to be already civilized to a certain extent to do it, but if you manage to settle there it is the best geographic environment to create advanced civilizations. And as soon as a group of people managed to civilize it is able to produce art and culture.
>>9059592
Because the bourgeoise of the past wanted to look smart, so they paid actual geniuses to produce art. Do this for a few hundred years and you'll get a cultural tradition going on.
That said the WEST at large doesn't have an abundance of literature and philosophy, stop appropriating German, Italian, French and Spanish accomplishments, especially if you're American.
At what point did you realize that this entire website is the ultimate byproduct of the hyperculture of decadence?
>>9059544
about the same time I realized that in all of human history, decadent entertainment has been the central focal point.
>>9059544
>it's a first year poster thread

Lmao, do people actually do this willingly?
Novels are so boring, holy shit, its beyond my comprehension how anyone could read this verbose garbage all the time. Only poetry and philosophy are worth anything
death is the only option
>>9059508
What if it's just one big poem desu.
>>9059508
You're half right there boss. Only poetry is worth reading
ITT: Help me come up with an argument in favor of stereotyping, and refute the claim that it's an extreme form of generalizing and therefore, as the argument goes, hinders critical thinking.
if time is a limited resource, I believe stereo typing is a useful tool
You are an ancient hominid, you see the silhouette of a large cat in the grasses. You aren't sure if you should limit your necessary foraging, but time is of the essence. Based on previous experiences with another large cat species, you decide to not take the risk and leave the grasslands to seek refuge. Your neighbor does not make this generalization and gets robbed by a nigger.. I mean cat.
In all seriousness I think stereotyping is caused by lazy thinking. Is it really that difficult to take a few seconds to judge someone based on their individual behavior? Wouldn't you want someone to do the same unto you?
>>9059463
>an extreme form of generalizing and therefore, as the argument goes, hinders critical thinking
Does not follow. Generalising isn't useful?
Is this collection a good place to start with Nietzche?
It includes The Birth of Tragedy, Beyond Good and Evil, On the Genealogy of Morals, The Case of Wagner, and Ecce Homo. Edited and translated by Walter Kaufmann.
>>9059374
the greeks and kant are a good place to start with Nietzsche.
>>9059374
Learn German, fag. If you must read Kaufmann, ignore his "scholarship".
