what a goddamned moron. i'm not saying there aren't better things than bringing yourself to orgasm, but socrates has to come up with a dumb story about pleasure binding the soul to the body to justify his hatred of (i'm assuming) dudes who got to fuck more little boys than him.
at the very least, living a good & virtuous life should most often result in a life of consistent and moderate pleasure. ANYTHING but these ethics of abnegation. can't believe this is the faggot who "grounds the tradition" or w/e
>>9099392
but didnt socrates drink wine and stuff?
So he couldnt have made the statement absolute? Do you have an excerpt or quote? Was he only talking about premarital, non missionary, or non reproductive sex?
>>9099392
I think you're misunderstanding his argument, but it has been a while since I've read Plato. Care to post the passage?
How do you fuck up the Socratic fundamentals so badly?
Nobody fucked more than S, no one drank more, no one killed more people in battle.
It's just socratic reflection and postulation for discourse.
At least you bother to take a stance.
Hello.
What's the term for improper use of metaphor?
I forget!
Nevermind. It just came to me in revelation.
Amazing how the mind works.
Some times you just need to ask, then Minerva whispers the answer.

Goddamn. This shit nearly moved me to tears. How beautiful. Are there any other examples of great world literature that has meaning toward a national identity/a creed/a historical emotional reflection?
Don't worry this isn't a thinly veiled /pol/ thread.
Here's a reading of part of it I like, from a video game no less, but the way the voice actor approached it is great in my opinion.

If I should die, think only this of me;
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

Why is World War One poetry so GOAT?
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
I like pizza.
What is some good literature that centers around pizza/pizza culture.

IMO Flaubert is superior at expressing l'humaine condition than any 19th century Russian novelist

Contemporary literature is just as good, if not better, than the canon.
>>9098963
What works of contemporary literature are you basing your opinion off?
>>9098972
Bump, I'm geniuenly curious
Where do I start with Vollmann?
Europe Central
>>9098936
At having no taste.

I would go for the ice-shirt, Europe central or risen angels
This book is good, has anyone read it?
>>9098885
No.
>>9098892
Why not
>>9098896
Honestly, I don't read female authors.
If I play videogames based on Tom Clancy, am I losing patrician points in literature?
Yes.
>>9098759
Am I really though?
>>9098767
Yes.
Why should I believe that anything exists beyond what can be perceived? Why should I believe that anything beyond the physical exists?
You can't perceive my thoughts, does that mean my thoughts don't exist?
You can't perceive my physical interactions, does that mean my physical interactions don't exist?
You can't smell my farts, does that mean my farts don't exist?
If a tree falls in a forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound at all?

Why was Demon's Souls so much better than Dark Souls?
Hey /lit/, my books have recently acquired a nasty, musty smell to them, and it seems to be spreading. I can't find any obvious evidence of mold, leading me to think it may be some sort of mildew growing in the spine. Even worse, the smell has started spreading to other books of mine. I'm not certain it's mold/mildew, but the smell is rank and honestly gives me a headache whenever I breathe it in. How do I fix this without burning my books
Microwave one and see what happens. Report back.
>>9098676
Wouldn't that burn the book? I also don't have access to a microwave, but I suppose if necessary, I'll purchase one
Tell your mother to stop rubbing her cunt on your books
Hey, I've been reading some Camus and enjoyed it quite a lot. I've read The Stranger and The Myth of Sisyphus for now.
Any recommendations on other books related to Camus (or books by himself, as well)?
Tried reading Thus Spoke Zarathustra but it's too fucking boring and I probably don't have the knowledge to enjoy it anyways.
>>9098424
Try Nausea by Sartre perhaps. I haven't read it, but I know he and Camus were friends, and Nausea is supposedly Sartre's best novel.
Grendel is a pretty comfy meme. It's more sartre than camus though.
What about The Fall? Or The Plague? Both Camus books
>Lovecraft was a precocious youth: he was reciting poetry at age two, reading at age three, and writing at age six or seven. His earliest enthusiasm was for the Arabian Nights, which he read by the age of five
>www.hplovecraft.com/life/biograph.aspx
The author of the above article elsewhere mentions that Lovecraft was assisted in reading the Arabian Nights by his grandfather. Not on his own effort.
Based on the above information, and weighed against the data of other child prodigies, Lovecraft's IQ was between 150-180.
But if Lovecraft was such a prodigy, why was he unable to teach himself college level mathematics, even into his adult age? Despite desperately wanting to. And despite having access to a local college level library, in his youth.
He probably had an IQ no higher than the 130s. Another mediocre "gentleman".
>>9098410
130 is still pretty high especially for the 20's
>the IQ meme
Even most serious STEMtards don't believe this, and it benefits them the most.
>>9098410
>he was reciting poetry at age two, reading at age three
is this special?
