How can can a sane person enjoy reading a tragedy?
18 posts and 1 images submitted.

what's sanity got to do wivit. i dunno man, helps us relate to others while securing information about scenarios to avoid or solve in the future? the vicarious element doesn't mean we're not sane either, i don't think, just curious and willing to watch others subjected to suffering for our amusement. is that sanity or just greed and cruelty?

I'm turning in a one-act play for a boring intro class tomorrow. I wanted to share it here since it was inspired by the Bernie chicken tendies copypasta. Any tips on how to make it better?

[The stage is set as messy room of a young woman. Clothes strewn about the floor, an unkempt bed, a desk with just enough space for a laptop between the stacks of clutter and colorful holiday lights lining the window are immediately noticeable. A young woman is heard giggling beyond the door STAGE LEFT]
TARYNN: [Laughing] I’m just lucky I made it through today without getting arrested.
[TARYNN enters through the door while talking on the latest cellphone]
TARYNN: Well before I even got to class, this white guy with one of those mustaches that turns into sideburns was sitting like he owned the bus. I was sitting across from him and he wouldn’t stop staring right at me!

[TARYNN takes her yoga pants off and plops her filled backpack down by her desk]
TARYNN: Right?! Like why don’t you watch your weight before watching me! So anyways, I put the other headphone in and just ignored him until I got off at the next stop. My first two classes were as boring as usual, but my third hour is where I literally almost punched a guy.

[TARYNN laughs and a knock on the door goes unnoticed]

TARYNN: You know that quiet guy I told you about? The one who always sits next to me? Today he showed up wearing one of those hats!
[A louder knock on the door]
MOM: Tarynn?
TARYNN: Uggh hold on one sec. [TARYNN opens the door] What, mom?
MOM: You didn’t even say ‘hi’ to me when you came in, you just stormed up here. Is everything ok?
TARYNN: [Raises her voice] I’m fine! Is dinner ready yet?
MOM: It will be in a few minutes, I just wanted to check up on you.
TARYNN: Well I’m fine, come get me when dinner is ready.
[MOM exits and TARYNN closes the door behind her]
>>
>>9135492
TARYNN: [back into the phone] So anyways, it’s like I couldn’t believe it, but I could, you know? [Sits down at the desk and places the laptop from her bag onto the desk] I asked him nicely the first time to take his hat off, but he just looked at me with that blank expression he always has and went back to his phone. The second time I got right in his face and straight up told him “there is ZERO tolerance for hate speech on this campus.” [Pauses to listen to the phone] Exactly. So, I could feel everyone in the class staring at us, but Dr. Toriyama walked in then and I didn’t want to get in trouble and have to listen to a lecture through that annoying accent of his, so I just gave Adolf a look to show him I meant business. Then I moved over another seat. [Pauses to listen while setting up her laptop] Yeah, I can feel it in my blood; tonight’s going to be another Michigan. I’m going to try to fit in one more phone bank before the polls close, I’ll talk to you later. Match me? [Laughs and hangs up the phone]
TARYNN: [Typing] Ok… let’s see here… I’ll try this one. [Dials into the phone] … hello? Hi, this is a grass-roots representative for the Bernie Sanders campaign. Are you ready to join our revolution? The polls are closing soon, are you- [Looks at phone and sighs] Results are probably coming back now anyways, I’ve done enough phone-banking as is.
[Types and clicks on the laptop]

TARYNN: This can’t be right… [clicks around some more] No… [clicking intensifies] Of course CNN says Hillary is winning, but even 270 is putting Bernie behind! [Slams laptop shut and begins pacing around the room] What the fuck is happening?! It wasn’t supposed to be like this! I thought he was polling well in New York? This is so fucked!
[A knock on the door followed by MOM entering with a plate of chicken nuggets]
MOM: Tarynn, I brought you a plate of tendies. I thought-
[TARYNN smacks the plate out of MOM’s hands]

TARYNN: REEEEEEE!
MOM: Tarynn what the hell is wrong with you?!
TARYNN: Get out of my room! [TARYNN pushes MOM out and slams the door behind her] Now there’s food all over the floor! [Distressed] I don’t know what to do! I didn’t mean to do that to mom, but I’m literally in shock right now! Bernie can’t lose! I need Bernie to be the president so he can fix this broken country! I don’t want to believe the world is so corrupt! [TARYNN sits on the floor, beginning to sob] I can’t fucking deal with this right now; I feel like I’m going to explode! What the fuck is happening? I need a future to believe in! [sobs]

Why do more people underline rather than bracket anything longer than a few words? Here's a page from The Sound and the Fury I picked up from my university. Not to mention this same person underlined so horrendously that they often crossed out words. Also, they used margin brackets so frequently that passages started to lose their power, and the few annotations they did leave amounted to: "Jesus Christ," "Is this guy for real," and "this fuck (Jason) doesn't even love his mother."

Hey /lit/ I am poor as hell and I am picking up a second job, and I want to know what are some of your experiences working at Barnes and Noble.

I know they have aren't that good of a company to work for and all that. I just want to work in it because it'll be quiet (I'm assuming).

As far as retail jobs go, it's not bad. You have to shill the Barnes and Noble membership program, but these days every retail job involves trying to sell some connected membership or credit card.

If you have a decent store manager, you'll be fine. It can be a fun job. Sometimes you even get to talk about books. Keep in mind though that 95% of the people coming through the door really just want to buy the new Twilight/Harry Potter/whatever book.

>am I allowed to drink coffee on the job?

This is a question for your boss.

As a random internet person, I will say if you aren't in a red state, wear a man bun, and are willing to rock a hipster sweater and unnecessary reading glasses you might be able to make the coffee work. Like some kind of sage of the register, just here to look thoughtful and talk about Kneechee.

I believe that the baseline of reality is words and categorized meanings to transmit and generate itself, and secondly, faith in those meanings and their use. Meanings themselves rely on something deeper to maintain them, as do we.

Even Christ teaches us Egregore.

Many people reach for audiobooks as a way to conveniently digest books while they work, commute, and so on. Of course, this is permitted. Many great works are available in this format, and the demand is there.

However, the cognition involved in reading a book, and listening to a recording of it being read by somebody else, is altogether different. Audiobooks are a more passive experience, and a step away from the way the author intended the book to be digested.

Unless it's a non-fiction or work of poetry, I don't see the point in them, unless it's for pseud reasons. Audiobooks are not literature, and those who partake in them should stop wasting their time, turn off their tvs, and actually read the thing as it was intended to be - not merely from a tape during your yoga class, lunch, work, car drive, etc

If you read audiobooks, why?

They're my only option due to eye problems.
What are your hot opinions on that OP?
>>
>>9134038
Well,Milton had books read to him. You probably 'read' a lot closer to the text than most people - in this sense you're an exception. I presume, though, that many people listen to an audiobook and come away with nothing apart from the plot.
>>
>>9133997
anything that's not really to dense or verbose should be retainable in audiobook format unless you got mental problems

They simply are bluepilled as opposed to us redpilled philosopher kings.

Read the Allegory of the Cave. It is our duty to go back to the normies and try to redpill them. But don't expect it to be easy or for them to ever thank you for it. You chose to walk out into the light but you cannot unsee what has been seen. Only to serve the dark ones willingly, but then you are worse than the most dedicated norm. Good luck Anons.
Indoctrination. Like the prisoners in the allegory of the cave, they've been taught that the shadows on the wall are supreme, and that those returning from the surface with the truth are paranoid conspiracy theorists.
You can't ever leave, this is permanent. Think of it as the Allegory of the Cave. Once you're outside, you can't crawl back into the cave.
I'm just a big fan of Greek mythology and The Allegory of The Cave is one of my favorite "redpill simile" if you will, to drop on people.
>>
>>9133281
Well spoken, brother.
May the Greeks guide you! Praise Plato!

IIRC Shakespeare didn't like the fact that he had to write plays for an audience of mostly commoners, he felt that he was wasting his talents
