Books to overcome misanthropy? I keep coming back to the fact that I want nothing from people but distance as something fundamental in my debate on killing myself and have decided to tackle it in earnest.
And before anyone says the N-word, I've already read Nietzsche, and cannot find his described will to affirm life when all earthly endeavors seem tainted, hollow, and vulgar to me, and all endeavors likewise seem inexorably earthly (human). I thought he was supposed to be some grand refutation of nihilism but I don't see it at all. He's half a determinist and seems to simply condemn all the swathes of people that don't fall into his uber potentate camp, of which I seemingly number, but at the same time there's no place for me among the detested collectivism of the 'meek' either. And if you allow me one more preempt, I value your thoughts as I do my own, it doesn't preclude disliking both, it's no contradiction but yet another constraint.
I appreciate all responses.

If you really are suicidal, play a sport you'll enjoy, see a psychologist, try and get yourself outdoors as much as possible. Try meditation/mindfulness. Philosophy really won't help much.
"Mindfulness in Plain English" is a good intro to meditation without all the religious stuff. It's simple and a quick read, although the author does make some questionable claims, the suggestions and instructions on how to meditate are very good.

Nietzsche doesn't want you to overcome misanthropy. You're reading the wrong books.

I don't see how else an amor fati is possible. It is a human fate, a human struggle to be embraced, the the transformation of the eternal recurrence from '“das schwerste gewicht' to a thing to be rejoiced and gladly lived again and again is very fundamentally a love of humanity. This in no way means an acceptance of its baser elements, in fact these are among those struggles to be welcomed (loved).
anyone gone to st johns college undergrad? either campus, doesn't matter.
it looks pretty cool, got accepted, but can't visit for a while and after looking through the twitters of some of the students they look like fucking retards and i'm anxious about the quality of the discussions.
can anyone speak about this? are there any serious students there? i study probably 9 hours a day; languages, literature, starting some maths, but i'm not sure if sjc just has hippier college kids or if there are some serious students..
is it possible to fix up the quality of bad discussions? i consider myself a pretty straightforward and relatively assertive guy, so if someone has retarded thoughts i won't be hesitant to call them out on them.. will this help me make discussions better, so even if there are bad students, the discussions won't be all that bad?
help appreciated, can't find much on the school besides a few old threads; school is too small.

Come on man, if you look at the twitters of students at any college/uni you will feel the same how you think that will affect the caliber of your education and in-class discussion is retarded.
I'm not how sure how you got into any university think the twitters of some students represent the school and her student body as a whole.
There's serious and not serious students at every school, how could you think there's a university attended by only 'not serious students' ?
That being said private Catholic universities are great, I always be happy I went to one and I hope it suits you well.
Every university is what you make of it. If you get really lucky you'll have classes with students who care. But even Ivy League and other elite universities have shitloads of undergrads who don't give a fuck, or even worse, undergrads who think they give a fuck because they're precocious little brats but really they are stultifying mediocrities, not really intellectually passionate about anything.
Don't become a big fish in a small pond either.

I once embarassed myself by trying to argue to my English teacher that the word "No" was onomatopoeic. I was convinced of it. I kept saying "But listen:" then repeating "No" over and over again.

I feel like if you need so many words to convey an idea, than you're not talented. I like simply, plain language. Big words come off as dishonest and make authors who use them a lot look stupid.
