Is this why he did it, /lit/?
>Once during my undergrad semester I probably mistakenly smoked for the first time in a while, opened up Ulysses, and went through Telemachus to appreciate the language. For the short amount of time that I was able to harness my focus (3 or 4 pages), Buck Mulligan was a fat, confident Dopey from Snow White, climbing a wizard's tower like something out of Fantasia, and Stephen was his eternal servant lingering on the stairs, sort of a Grumio type, only more sulky and less funny. I found myself laughing aloud at Malachi's quips, whereas any time else I can only ver stand back and appreciate them for what they try to do.
>Also but then like a few moments later I had a panic attack whereat the peak I felt halfway between a great tragedian and a crackpot, either way destined to suffer. Everything played out like a movie before me, and since, mistakenly, I had smoked with two anxious-prone friends, the anxiety enveloped me and for a moment I thought I'd be trapped seeing life as a movie.
I checked out the first few pages myself and... "He pointed his finger in friendly jest and went over to the parapet."
>in friendly jest

No, because once you're done with him you'll kill yourself
The first two essays in Parerga and Paralipomena vol 1 are "History of the Ideal and Real" and "History of Philosophy." The headings of History of Philosophy are:
Pre-Socratic, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Neoplatonists, Francis Bacon, Descartes, Berkley, and Kant
I'd read the essays and look into the philosophy of Transcendental Idealism and Plato.

Are all his books like this? Pre-modernist stream of consciousness garbage
No wonder Nabokov thinks he is a sentimental mediocrity

why is this novel held in such high esteem?
just finished it and other than the beautiful language, nothing in particular stands out for me. can someone tell me why i'm a pleb?
because americans have zero good authors, and desperately try to convince themselves of the contrary by latching onto whoever appears to have the slightest hint of talent
Why have you not read the greatest work of 20th century philosophy yet?

/lit/ memed me into reading this. I don't usually read non-fiction/philosophy (just never got into it) so this book has kind of broken my worldview. is he right? is life really "malignantly useless"? The terrifying part of this book is that he frames any resistance to its ideas as part of The Conspiracy itself
the only argument I've been able to rationalize against it is that he views human life through too wide of a lens. through his view, nothing could make human life (or any conscious life) worth living. Maybe that's just true
>>9144613
He makes a huge logical error that renders his argument philosophically useless: he presupposes his conclusion and sets out to prove it. It may be poetic but to talk about this book philosophically is to wander around a dead end.
>>9144635
I can agree with that general sentiment. But he's far from the only pessimist/anti-natalist in the world. The book is really a collection of the ideas from other people, which I admittedly haven't read, but still. It doesn't render his book undiscussable, imo

This guy hasnt said anything an edgy wa nabe nihilist teen hasnt said

Why does /lit/ hate contemporary literature so much?
>>9141893
Because women are allowed to write it
>>9141893
Personally? Because nothing good has come out of it yet.
>>9141893
Because so much of it is vapid, pretentious and blatantly whoring for literary prizes.
Literary fiction is a construct of the publishing industry. It's just a genre like any other.
literary tattoos.
Have any of you got them?
>>9127380
tattoos are for faggots.
>>9127380
Tattoos are for sexually active people
>>9127383
This. Literary tattoos are even worse since it's all just for show and you know for a fact they haven't even read the book and are just a product of brainwashed materialism. Does anyone else find it sad how many people need to carve out an identity for themselves to feel unique?
>tfw insecure in your taste in books and overall literary knowledge/intelligence

ok. ok. wow. just... ok. you are a fucking faggot

Why can't I even come up with a plot ffs
I wanted to write a novel about a war journalist who has a mentally ill son who ends up being a criminal but I realized I just can't handle something like that
I dont know anything about war or being in a war zone or being a criminal or paternal love
And I just can't write without using stream of consciousness, which I dont really want to use
Just fuck my shit up I will stick to write pop songs, bros
