I'm interested in Beckett, and thought this would be a good place to start. Is this worth reading? What should I expect? Google tells me Beckett is an avant-garde writer, what did they mean by this? Am I gonna find some late Joycean stuff, or heavy symbolism, or what?

I've only read waiting for godot and endgame but I found his works enjoyable, I've never tried deeply analysing anything but he can make you laugh at things that are properly depressing
>>
I read this last month as my first Beckett. I thought it was more Flann O'Brien than Joyce. It's a funny book. Had to reread a paragraph every now and then to catch the meaning but nothing too dificult.

I need help with English Grammar. Linguistics presumably goes in /his/, but since this is english grammar I thought it better to post here.

Which is more grammatical?
>Neither [of my shoes] is there
>Neither [of my shoes] are there

Is "Neither" plural or singular? I lean towards plural since "Zero [of my shoes] is there" sounds worse than "Zero [...] are there".

Secondly, can "I" be an object? As in "He is taller than I" vs "He is taller than me". The first sentence could also be expressed as "He is taller than I am" and have the same semantic value, but it doesn't necessarily make the first sentence wrong, does it?

[your] shoes are the subject, the verb corresponds to the subject

shoes are plural, the usage therefore is "are"

idk how to describe it in exact technical terms but that's pretty much it

How are you supposed to "write what you know" when you have a vocabulary two to three times the average size of the people you know?

How is dialogue supposed to happen when farmers talk like english grads? And have no particular interest in farming, sports, or... I don't know, getting drunk? That about covers it with my hometown.

Does "write what you know" really mean "know your place"?

Think of Elliot Rodger. He was a borderline retarded autist who would ree out because people he considered more low status than him got laid and he couldn't. He knew nothing about human interaction or much else for that matter, all the little shit knew about was tfw no gf. But that's what he wrote about and he wrote probably the first important literary work of the 21st century as a result. So look to the Supreme Gentleman for inspiration

Hello friends, I am really new to this literature thing, I come from the weebverse and was wondering if you guys could recommend me to some great short stories(if possible things like the one-shots of junji itou) maybe from Lovecraft or Poe

Try lovecraft and/or Poe
>>
>>9171971
I don't know if Poe or Lovecraft really capture the same mad horror of Ito. Ito will twist something that can be seen as good, i.e. Curiosity in 'The Enigma of Amigara Fault' or the spiral in 'Uzumaki'. Lovecraft has two themes in his work, forbidden knowledge, and human insignificance. Poe I can't really comment on because I'm still currently reading, but he seems to be tamer in his plots than both Lovecraft and Ito.

I recommend 'Cold Air', 'Dagon', 'The Terrible Old Man' and 'Whisperer in Darkness' as they're some of my favourites of Lovecraft.

I finally got around to reading Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton, the historical* retelling of the Arab Ibn Fadlan's adventures with the Vikings.

The book was incredible, I would highly recommend it if you haven't read it.

There is a scene in the book where Ibn has wild and detailed sex with a Viking woman. For whatever reason, this was hot as fuck to me.

Could anyone recommend any good historical/adventure novels with some subtle erotic touches to them?

(* It's more likely than not that Ibn was stretching the truth so "historical" is used loosely. Still an awesome story though.)

Do you mean Crichton?
>>
>>9171969
I meant Ibn's account of what happened may have been exaggerated from his end.

Crichton based it off of Ahmad ibn Fadein's journal which I've never read, I have no idea if Crichton spiced it up a little in the translation/interpretation as well.

Do you learn to be fluent in Greek and Latin with just a Bachelors in classics?

Really thinking about it. I think I'm missing out on too much
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
No, you won't. They can only teach you to translate Greek and Latin or, at most, to read originals by yourself but very slowly
>>
>>9171674
so only a masters in classics would obtain that?

Also, if that is your belief, is that what majoring in any language is?
>>
Depends on the student. My Classics department was pretty prestigious and I'd say most people at the postgrad level had "pretty good" Latin and OK to nonexistent Greek, unless they were Greek specialists. Most of the Classics major undergrads kinda blew at both because they had only really taken 2-3 years of it, gotten B averages and generally been "OK." Mostly Latin, again.

There were always outlier students. I had Latin from before undergrad, and some other people did too who had gone to school in other countries or gone to good private schools. And some kids just really took to it, but that was rarer.

Language acquisition is bumpy and undergrad doesn't exactly force you to do it beyond the level necessary to pass exams and hand in assignments. Probably MOST Classics majors will only become truly fluent or expert in their language of choice in year 1-3 of grad school. Then they take much more hardcore courses and comprehensive exams, which cements everything they've learned and forces them to professionalize it. Until then, most get by with adequate or decent ability, and plenty get by with downright mediocre or bad ability.

If you're asking whether YOU can learn Latin and Greek via a BA in Classics, yeah, easily. Just start learning it now, the 101 classes in first year, take whatever 2nd-level translation seminars you can the following year (and over the summer if you like), keep working on it on your own. There's no reason why you can't be fluent in 2-3 years if you really make it into a daily pursuit and life goal. But most people don't do this in undergrad. With anything.

Can anybody here edit a summary for me?

I'll pay money via paypal

Basically, I have a summary for a film I'm imagining, and I'll pay you to edit the summary to make it look all nice and cute - better grammar, more captivating wording, etc.

Interested? [email protected]

To be honest I don't know how we'd do this...It feels a little odd to pay you before hand, and if it's not noticeably better than what I have it'd feel odd to pay you, you know? Lucky for you, My writing is pretty standard.

I haven't read anything by Ben Lerner, but a lot of my friends think he's the greatest. I met him once actually at a party, seems like a cool guy. He and Cyrus Console have a bit of a following here in Kansas City/Lawrence.
