>average person reads 0 books a year
why
Most books that are available to them are trash.
It's like those annoying kids who think good music ended in the 70s; there is plenty of good music, but it's all indie and isn't played on radios 'n shit.
Go to the book section at Walmart or Target. It's all crap. Unfortunately in a lot of places these are the only places to get new books outside the internet, even then I doubt they know where to start without doing a lot of research beforehand.
tl:dr cultural marxism is probably to blame.

I think it's a bubble born out of the market that is already popping as people get bored and move to soundcloud and whatnot
>>9188855
>; there is plenty of good music, but it's all indie
hahahahahaahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahahahaah
How do the other arts view literature? How do actors, dancers, painters, sculptures, etc., view literature compared to their own respective art?
Inferiority complex
>>9188748
What?
>>9188744
tfw you manage to get several musicians to admit that music is the lowest form of art through dialectic arguments
when is it a good idea to incorporate sex scenes and how do you make them actually enjoyable?
whenever you think it's aesthetically appropriate and by writing them well
>>9188754
>writing them well
no shit
what would make you say a sex scene was "written well"?
>>9188779
i am becomng skilled pornographer, i will share with you a valuable tips
-the sexing is good, very vigorous and bold
-no political conversation or off-topic stuff, just sex
-it takes place in a believable way ('oh yeah', 'i like it,' 'this sex is very good', like this)
-it is a man and a woman, having the sexes both equally
-there is afterwards some food scenes, or like riding a bicycle in countryside, making happy memories and good times
-all of the sexing is in one scene, so, not like some sex in the bedroom, and then partly at restaurants or in cinema, for readers it is very confusing
-sexes are three in a book, so, you don't get overwhelmed of vigorous sluts
-personally, i like sexing scenes in places like airports, factories, sometimes famous places (eiffel tower, sphinx nose, all over the world)
-also, there is good lesson for life's journey. to having a sex is just have fun, be creative, you can do it
What is the difference between an intellectual and a pseud? What makes an intellectual 'intellectual' and what makes a pseud a 'pseud'? Furthermore, why are intellectuals regarded highly whereas pseuds are frowned upon?
An intellectual will not feel the need to prove to themselves or others how intellectual they are
I think that really is the only definition. A well-read pseud can still be pseudier than a poorly-read intellectual
An intellectual is a smart individual you agree with. A pseudointellectual is one you disagree with.
Sociologically speaking, I think you have to look at it as a question of legitimacy and illegitimacy, a relation or non-relation to the official, canonical or normative culture of intellectualism, as defined, for instance, by the universities or the established church. For example, There are members of the Church of England and there are dissenting nonconformists; there are university students and there are autodidacts. Weber says that historically the promotion of "intellectual culture" is related to the establishment of a religious priesthood or a bureaucratic civil service.
>postmodern literature is great
>postmodern philosophy is garbage
explain this
>>9188526
Both are shit desu.
>>9188526
Its actually the other way around
>modern literature is great
>modern architecture is garbage
Explain this
Why aspire to be well-read?
Because if you can't be an alpha, you can at least be a dignified beta.
so people like me without ever actually have to interact with them.
I was working with some goth faggot in a department store, and he was talking about "Die Büchse des Pandora." I was half paying attention, and said something like, "blah blah blah German expressionism," and he was absolutely blown away that I even had a modicum of understanding of what he was talking about. I made that little faggot feel alive through relative indifference masked as, and that's as a man, that's a valuable gift to provide to people. It makes them feel a little less alone.
Why not?
are you fat /lit/?
also, books about fat people
>>9188431
Boule de Suif.
No, I'm very slim and athletic. But here is a book about fat people.
Oblomov <3
Marius and Cossette's relationship felt hollow and poorly executed.
Rest of the book was good though.
That's because the relationship between the two wasn't planned, when Hugo started writing. It just seemed logical for two important characters of the same age and different sex to be together.
>>9188243
Both were better characters on they're own but that's a nice little interesting note.
>>9188216
Unrelated, but what's the best translation of Les Mis?
Do you know any other books by black authors that are completely bereft of black people?
I need to convince someone that I'm a diverse reader.
>>9188051
read some black authors then. you don't need to like them, and you never know, you might like one!
>>9188149
I cannot read about black people, that is simply not an option.
>>9188051
Are there any books by black authors that aren't about race?
I'm on my last book and need some new material, got any suggestions?
Classics/Historical would be great.
>>9188012
Strat with the Geeks.
>>9188155
How?
>>9188179
Read plato's the republic.
>tfw all the low hanging fruit is already taken
I'm never going to make it.
Yeah probably.
bitch more
the high hanging fruit is probably sour anyway
what does she mean? Was Lacan redpilled on women?
>>9187511
Lacan argued that females could never describe what turns them on/makes them orgasm.
In a way he was echoing Milton in Paradise Lost who describes Eve as being primarily in love with herself, not Adam.
Anyway, French feminists got really butthurt about Lacan's ideas and decided to prove him wrong with "ecriture feminine" (Cixous, Kristeva, and to an extent Irigaray - although she's a bit different and more pro-hetero. IMO they just worked to prove Lacan right.
>>9187622
>Lacan argued that females could never describe what turns them on/makes them orgasm.
Really n-word? Muscles/money?
And can men describe it? Wet taughtness? Smooth jiggliness? Solid, soft, impressive massness?
>>9188082
Men are better at describing what turns women on than women LOL
Approximately how big a portion of your bookshelf is unread?

Where does one start with the romans?
With the Greeks
>>9187121
... and end with Gibbon.
Roman historians. They're all great and what they tell you is essentially fiction with some nice spin anyway, as they don't agree with each other most of the time.
Go with Plutarch, Livy, Tacitus.
Understand the history leaves you e
Better placed to understand the literature
