We're good at plays but that's about it. Our only contribution to philosophy was killing Descartes and telling Foucault to fuck of with his shitty speculation. Also yes we gave the Nobel P to Dylan, fuck you
German Russian so I'm pretty much covered on all fronts.

We just won another Nobel for it so we're definitley the best.

There is a play by Tom Stoppard though. It's possible that Bloom likes this one too.

I've never heard him mentioned on here, but I'd have no problem with Basho being /our/ guy.

There's something that is bothering me.
I want to be a genre writer, because I want to write plot driven stories and mostly tell entertaining stories.
So, I started to read some sci fi books, and there's something that bothers me.
The quality of the prose is pretty terrible, even in the cases of the genius of sci fi, dune, forever war and starship troopers seems to have average prose.
Should I simply watch the movie adaptations?
I don't think I'm going to miss much about the book details, after all, they're usually minor details that don't matter.
So, following this logic, It seems logical the only prose worth my time is actually the literary fiction writers.
Or am I putting in broad strokes genre fiction?
Will I miss too much if I simply watch the movie adaptation rather than reading the book?
You have to pander to your audience. Scifi crowd doesn't give a shit about prose really.
>>9194477
Except, that is, insofar as it gives them the opportunity to hold up a book that's marginally better written than most and scream "SEE! SCI-FI IS REEEAAAL LITERATUREEEE"
see: fantasy readers with patrick rothfuss
If you want to write entertaining SF, read lots of SF authors. There are lots of ways in which prose can be "good". You don't want to read things that do subtle, interesting or beautiful things with the prose, because SF audiences won't appreciate that.
Watching the films will acquaint you with the tropes and settings and ideas and all that, but you need to learn how to write clear prose that communicates them. Different authors have different levels of clarity of writing. Read them so you can learn how to do that as best you can.

Discovery of Heaven is easily one of the worst books I've ever read. Based on that alone, that chart should be discarded, along with the entirety of the dutch people.

Nietzsche loving teenagers need to listen to this. Let's be honest /lit/, what is the real reason you like Nietzsche, is it not to delude yourself into thinking you're somehow the ubermensch?

I like N. because he is a brilliant thinker. "You only claim Higher Men exist because you believe yourself to be one" is not a substantive critique, anon---well, not of N. at least.
https://novoiceforfascism.tumblr.com/post/157940346162/fascist-philosophers-in-our-universities
"To Decolonise our Minds means to create spaces of exploration outside of our Western ways of thinking. Anti-fascism aligns itself with the project of decolonisation yet operates on the offensive. We need to denounce and shame those philosophers that are, through their provocations, introducing right-wing thought to students under the guise of criticality. Recently the philosopher Nick Land has been identified as right-wing. We agree, he is a fascist and his followers should be targeted and persecuted: Ray Brassier, Reza Negarestani, Robin Mckay, Matthew Fuller, Luciana Parisi, Kodwo Eshun, Mohammed Salemy, Scott Wilson, Eleni Ikonikadu and other thinkers that are associated with him should clarify their position. Although Robin Mckay, editor of the fascist publication Urbanomic, has responded, the failure of other identified fascists to clarify their political position shows a blatant avoidance of the issue. Anti-fascism must align with the project of Decolonisation in order to question the general whiteness of these thinkers; to examine how their thinking of subjects such as nihilism, neorationalism, evil media, speculative realism, xeno-feminism, accelerationism, algorithmic thinking, afrofuturism, sound media and the dark enlightenement (a project that Parisi entertains in a recent interview), enables a line of dialogue with neo-fascist thinkers such as Nick Land."
what did they mean by this?
86% sure this is a ruse
Something something cultural Marxism.

Seems straightfoward to me. Substantively misguided, though.
Rand successfully romanticized an ideology. Are there any other authors that have successfully romanticized non-libertarian ideology?
What is the deal with that hat?

This pic is outstanding and truly a metaphor for her whole work.
Lets have a contemporary poetry general thread.
I'm quite into pic related at the moment. Also reading a collection of sonnets by Walter Benjamin's sonnets that have been translated into english for the first time last year (so I'm counting that as contemporary)

Examples, OP?
sentenced to Life by Clive James
Sentenced to life, I sleep face-up as though
Ice-bound, lest I should cough the night away,
And when I walk the mile to town, I show
The right technique for wading through deep clay.
A sad man, sorrier than he can say.
But surely not so guilty he should die
Each day from knowing that his race is run:
My sin was to be faithless. I would lie
As if I could be true to everyone
At once, and all the damage that was done
Was in the name of love, or so I thought.
I might have met my death believing this,
But no, there was a lesson to be taught.
Now, not just old, but ill, with much amiss,
I see things with a whole new emphasis.
My daughter’s garden has a goldfish pool
With six fish, each a little finger long.
I stand and watch them following their rule
Of never touching, never going wrong:
Trajectories as perfect as plain song.
Once, I would not have noticed; nor have known
The name for Japanese anemones,
So pale, so frail. But now I catch the tone
Of leaves. No birds can touch down in the trees
Without my seeing them. I count the bees.
Even my memories are clearly seen:
Whence comes the answer if I’m told I must
Be aching for my homeland. Had I been
Dulled in the brain to match my lungs of dust
There’d be no recollection I could trust.
Yet I, despite my guilt, despite my grief,
Watch the Pacific sunset, heaven sent,
In glowing colours and in sharp relief,
Painting the white clouds when the day is spent,
As if it were my will and testament –
As if my first impressions were my last,
And time had only made them more defined,
Now I am weak. The sky is overcast
Here in the English autumn, but my mind
Basks in the light I never left behind.

Well yeah. Since all I write is academic stuff.

I meant prose, but sure
well no since it is the mark of a true 21st century intellectual to argue theory with no basis in reality. in fact I often make up facts that I know to be the opposite of the truth to enable my sophistry to reach heights never before dreamed of.

Yeah, you're a pleb if you read it.

Find a chronologic list of philosophers
Forget about the ones that are very difficult to read
Minimize the ones that massively refer to other philosophers
Among the ones remaining, pick the most ancient one
That's it, read some Plato, along with contemporary appealing essays if you feel like it.
