Shitposting aside: Are there any underrated Baltic writers I should know about?
>>9202717
Nope, they literally couldn't write until the 1500s and they didn't write anything but Christian pedagogical works until the 1800s.
What was his endgame, /lit/?

People always say to start with the Greeks. But which Greeks and which of their works do I start with?
Pic unrealated

Plato - Apology of Socrates.
Homer.
As has been said,Homer.
You may also want to read Ovid's Metamorphoses as, while not a Greek poem itself, does cover pretty much all the most well-known Greek myths, which are good to know as the images pertaining to those myths are often referred to in later writings.

I've been reading a bit alternate history and I wonder if anyone had any recommendation
Anyone?
>>9202124
Dominion by CJ Sansom was pretty interesting.
Any alternate history that isn't just 'what if the Nazis won a little bit?' or 'what if the Nazis lost even more?' etc.
Hi guys. Can you guys help. I need help getting over my escapism, I hate life and I am really starting to spend a shipload of time on vidya. I was looking for, hopefully, some literature/philosophy in regards to what to do with my life. I used to love reading now I can't focus for long and end up turning on the shitty Xbox and waste a couple of hours of life. I need self discipline and direction but can't summon the enthusiasm required for either. This is a serious plea for help, I need it
>>9202002
throw away your tv and your xbox, now
>looking for escape in the sensory realm
>i want to escape escapism, by asking a place that is escapist about other forms of escapism i can indulge in
You're a lost cause anon, just embrace it.
What is the best literature and best philosophy from the Roman Empire /lit/?
From the Empire period Petronius, Apuleius, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca (and Tacitus if you're into history). Also, of course, the triad Virgil-Horace-Ovid
>>9201982
His diary desu
>>9202541
Is that Marcus Aurelius?
so does this guy say anything about aesthetics/ethics/the human condition or is it all just autistic "what is the being of being whilst being the beingly being being" shit?
Heidegger applies to every subject he faces the filter of the "question of being", if you understand him it's pretty interesting. He doesn't say anything about ethics, but about the human human condition you can read letter on humanism, for art you can read the origin of the work of art

What anon said. Regarding ethics there's this sentence in *Gelassenheit* : "We should do nothing, just wait."
Do you listen to music while you read?
What sort of music, do you feel it affects your experience in any way?
Sample links welcome, be it Youtube or Soundcloud or whatever you prefer.
I feel if the music fits the mood of the text im reading its a much more well rounded experience. But of it doesnt match mood then it is super distracting.
wtf
no
God I hate millenials
Any thoughts on Dorian Gray or, more generally, Victorian horror? I've read a good chunk, and I'm in the market for some more spooky fiction from the era.
>>9201738
There's The Turn of the Screw of course, but it sounds likely you've read that already.
What are some of the better ones you've read, OP?
>>9201738
>or, more generally, Victorian horror?
You've basically got the Gothic genre, though it's not confined to the Victorian-period.
Could you ever write something in the style of My Struggle after My Struggle?
i hope not
I also hope not, it seemed to close the book on really dry and cheap memoirs. I certainly hope no one splits their life up into six novels again.
>>9201687
maybe in 80 years
Can a mediocre writer become a successful genre writer?
unfortunately yes
>>9201670
A bad writer can. The only thing it takes to be successful is sales and most people buy shit. This, mixed with the fact that the publishing industry is filled with self fellating faggots, means most good writers are doomed to be unsuccessful.
>>9201670
Yes. With genre, the plots are the main thing so if someone can nail those the rest has a good chance of falling into place regardless of writing quality.
However, a successful 'literary' fiction writer always makes a terrible genre fiction writer. Yet still they try.
